Arguing about race and undergoing a custody battle seem like the two most unpleasant things imaginable, but it looks like Halle Berry is up to the challenge. The Monster’s Ball actress sat down with Ebony to confirm that Halle Berry considers daughter Nahla Black. Berry, who is biracial herself, discusses how people of mixed race have the right to self-identify, “But I feel like she’s Black. I’m Black and I’m her mother, and I believe in the one-drop theory.” Of course, Halle’s comments come after, and seemingly in response to, rumors that ex Gabriel Aubry doesn’t consider Nahla Black, in addition to allegedly calling Halle the N-word during their custody battle, which grows increasingly gruesome. We’re just hoping Nahla is in the other room with Dora the Explorer turned alllllllll the way up during this whole ordeal.
No matter her own feelings on the subject, Berry acknowledges that Nahla will have to come to her own conclusions about her own ethnic make-up. “What I think is that that’s something she’s going to have to decide,” Berry said. “I’m not going to put a label on it. I had to decide for myself, and that’s what she’s going to have to decide—how she identifies herself in the world. And I think, largely, that will be based on how the world identifies her. That’s how I identified myself.” Here’s hoping Nahla has the support of both parents as she navigates the tricky subject of race, though the fact they can’t be in the same room without getting into a screaming match isn’t going to be much help.

In case you were wondering how their custody dispute could possibly get worse, now you know! We had heard that Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry‘s custody battle involves racial slurs and dates with Kim Kardashian. Now sources claim that Gabriel Aubry “went nuts” when Nahla was called “black,” even going so far as to suggest asking magazines for a “retraction” if they describe his daughter as such. Our first thought is, why would an alleged racist have a kid with one of the most famous African-American women in America? Our second thought is, you can never tell when someone is going to act the fool, can you?
We aren’t about to get out a pie-chart to debate a toddler’s ethnic background. However, given that biracial Berry doesn’t shy away from her African-American heritage, we doubt she would take kindly to Gabriel’s race-based hysteria. Aubry has come out against previous accusations, claiming he is “disappointed in Halle’s decision to falsely malign him publicly,” but so far has said nothing about the new claims. Reports also allege that the custody battle started after Aubry’s refusal to move to NYC forced Halle to drop out of New Year’s Eve to be close to her daughter. We sincerely hope this new horribleness is nothing but a filthy rumor; there’s nothing a baby needs less than a racist dad. Well, that and her parents to have a super-ugly divorce in public. So really, two things.

Despite what sources might have told TMZ earlier this week, all signs are now pointing toward Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry heading into a custody battle. Allegedly Berry picks screaming fights with her ex if he steps out of line, meltdowns that reportedly drove Aubry to file a paternity petition for fear that Halle might try to restrict his access to their daughter Nahla. “Basically whenever Gabriel doesn’t do exactly what Halle tells him to do, or if he does something she doesn’t approve of or like, she goes crazy on him, screaming and shouting,” a source claims. Wow, is this the same Halle Berry we all know and love? If this is even half-way true, Halle should get an Oscar for her finest role yet: pretending to be a normal human being.
Supposedly it’s Aubry’s luck with the ladies that really has Berry in a twist. “She was particularly angry that he had been so public, even going to a Lakers game one time, and she totally berated him, basically telling him that if he has to date, just date a nobody waitress that nobody will care about,” the source explains. To be fair, if we saw our ex on TV sitting courtside with Kim Kardashian, we don’t know what we’d do either, beside shut the game off. Things have gotten so bad, Gabriel suspects Berry of hiring a private detective to tail him around. Since most of these allegations sound like the ravings of one of Aubry’s disgruntled college buddies, we’ll going to go ahead and give Berry the benefit of a doubt. If not, we’ll nominate Halle ourselves!

Since it’s already the season of celebrities popping out babies, we probably shouldn’t be too surprised that it’s also the season of celebrity baby drama. According to TMZ, apparently Halle Berry‘s ex Gabriel Aubry filed a paternity petition on December 30 of last year for joint physical and legal custody and support. The petition will allow a judge to officially name Aubry as Nahla’s father, a step that could potentially suggest a custody battle is in his future. We hope it doesn’t come to that, though we completely understand wanting to be with a kid that cute 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
While rumors of Aubry and Berry’s custody troubles reared their ugly heads last May, according to TMZ’s source the couple have so far managed to work out their differences. That original dispute allegedly stemmed from both parents’ chaotic schedules, something that isn’t likely to calm down if Berry is cast as Aretha Franklin, a possibility which has Halle saying, “I would absolutely entertain the idea, it would be an honor for anyone to play her.” Another source claims that currently Halle and Gabriel are a “2” out of 10, 10 being Mel Gibson vs. Oksana Grigorieva (or so we assume). Here’s hoping they never get above a 3 over that adorable little peanut.
