Joseph Gordon-Levitt Puts GQ On Blast Over Brother's Death

Sadly, Joseph Gordon-Levitt had to take time off from looking lip-bitingly gorgeous on the cover of GQ today to correct the magazine on details surrounding the death of his brother Burning Dan. The only problem? JGL’s correction only made us more confused as to what happened to his sibling, who passed away in 2010 at the age of 36.

JGL posted on his Tumblr today, “I’m writing this because I have a problem with what their article says about my brother.  I’ll be honest, it really made me feel terrible.  Here’s a quote: ‘…the elder Gordon-Levitt died of an alleged drug overdose in 2010.  “It was an accident” is all Joe will say about that.’” Said the Dark Knight Rises star, “Using the word ‘alleged’ technically allows the writer to say whatever she wants.  The ‘allegations’ to which she must be referring were made by a handful of gossip websites.  They are factually incorrect according to the coroner’s office and the police department. I don’t like publicly speaking about my brother’s death, but I’m making an exception to correct this irresponsible claim.”  We completely understand JGL wanting to dispel any misinformation floating around in the blogosphere, but…why not then clarify what actually happened?

Dan Gordon-Levitt’s Death Caused By Possible OD

Yesterday, Joseph Gordon-Levitt announced the death of his older brother Dan (a.k.a “Burning Dan”), and today, it’s being reported that the cause of death may have been a drug overdose.

A neighbor who lives near the apartment Dan was staying in told Radar Online “They (Dan and his friends) had been partying, and we were woken up with the girl screaming. She came running out to the front garden of their apartment and some people went out to help her. The paramedics were called, but he was found dead surrounded by needles and syringes.” E! News is also reporting that the L.A. Coroner’s Office stated that his case “was initially reported to us as a possible overdose.”

The official cause of death won’t be confirmed until toxicology reports are complete.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Brother, Burning Dan, Has Died

Joseph Gordon Levitt‘s brother, Dan Gordon-Levitt aka Burning Dan has passed away. He was just 36 years old, and unfortunately, no one knows why or how it happened. All we know is that JGL got on his Twitter account last evening tweeting, “My super hero brother @burningdan 1974-2010. Celebrate his life here ~ http://bit.ly/dBTMQ8 because he’s f**king awesome.”

He did  sound awesome with his Burning Dan website describing what he did as, “a photographer, fire dancer, swashbuckler, and traveler.” He taught flow arts which is a mix of  performance art, dance, meditation and yoga, and was a regular at Burning Man with his fire dancing. Sounds like he had an incredible life!  He was active on his Burning Dan Twitter and Tumblr accounts till Sunday. What happened after?

Joseph wrote a tribute to his brother on hitRecord, the “open collaborative production company” they started, saying, “BURNING dAN brightly embodied that bold beastly bliss sometimes referred to as “the creative spirit.” He was my chief collaborator on the foundational incarnations of hitRECord.org over the years and continues to inspire us ever the more. He would absolutely positively insist that we not let this bad news deter us on our collective mission. That said, I might not feel up to it for a little while.”

This is so sad. Our condolences to his family and friends.
