Ricki Lake Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

Actress and documentary film maker Ricki Lake has long struggled with her weight. She started her career in the John Waters‘ flick Hairspray, at the time calling herself “big, blonde and beautiful,” but later admitted to crash dieting during this time. In 1993, the star landed her own talk show, which erupted into an unexpectedly huge hit. But behind the success, Ricki was struggling to get her weight under control.  In 1994 she lost more than 100 pounds, but her method was unhealthy. “I was starving myself. I was fainting,” she later said.

At her heaviest, the star weighed in at 260 pounds and was a size 24. But in 2006-2007, Ricki began eating meals delivered from “Fresh Dining” and she “went from a 12-14 to a size 6.” These days, she’s as sexy as ever and loving her look. “For the longest time, when I was very heavy, I couldn’t cross my legs,” she told US Weekly in 2007. “I couldn’t physically do it. LOVE that I can cross my legs now.”

Carrie Underwood Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

Carrie Underwood entered the fourth season of American Idol as a 21-year-old country girl from Oklahoma who favored T-shirts, jeans and no makeup and listed her hero as “mommy” on her Idol application. Carrie lived on a farm, far from the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles and pleaded in a country drawl on her Idol audition video, “I wanna go to Hollywood really bad.” After Carrie won the season, she released the best-selling female country debut album of all time, graced numerous red carpets in fabulous gowns, and dated some of Hollywood’s hottest eligible bachelors (Chace Crawford, Tony Romo and current hockey player beau Mike Fisher).

Carrie became educated on designer labels and chucked her overalls. “I’ll go home and one of my friends will say, ‘Oh my, gosh, those shoes are so cute.’ And I’ll say, ‘Oh, they’re Christian Loubotin’s.’ They’re like, ‘What?’ she told Glamour. She also started stocking up at Sephora. “I have a giant makeup case, more makeup than any girl should have in her lifetime,” she admits. Carrie also shed her country girl pounds by doing cardio workouts and keeping a diary of everything she eats. In just a few years Carrie morphed from goofy farm girl to sophisticated fashionista.

Axl Rose Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

Axl Rose was once the biggest of the big-hair bad-asses, whether pulling that it under a bandana in Guns N’ Roses’ “Paradise City” or hairspraying it to the heavens in “Welcome To The Jungle.” And then, just when we were getting used to the guy, he disappeared for a decade.

When the GNR singer returned to the limelight in 2003, he was still rocking sports jerseys and shrieking across the stage. Only now his long hair was knotted into golden braids, making him look not unlike a post-op Predator. Should he keep the knots or change it back before the band’s (knock on wood) upcoming tour?

Oprah Winfrey Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

If there’s anyone who loves to talk about her weight issues, it’s media queen Oprah Winfrey. The talk show darling has openly struggled with emotional eating, for years, discussing her problems in depth on her hit show. She very publically lost weight in the 80s, showing up on her own show looking slender and dragging a wagon filled with fat to demonstrate how much weight she lost. But she soon packed the pounds back on, and in 1992 she reached her heaviest weight at 237 pounds.

But by 2005 Oprah had bounced back at a lean 160 pounds. She worked out endlessly, ran a marathon, and avoided bread at all costs. But a pesky thyroid problem slowed down her weight loss in 2007, and her weight began creeping back up again. Most recently she dedicated an entire cover of her magazine to her current weight gain, and vowed to get her diet and exercise habits back on track. We think she looks fabulous no matter what the scale says. Do you agree?

LeAnn Rimes Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

LeAnn Rimes began her rise to fame as a pudgy “Star Search” contestant with big hair and big dreams. At the tender age of 13, LeAnn belted out hits like “Blue,” which put her on the map as one of country’s hottest stars and evoked memories of Patsy Cline. While wearing too much makeup and outfits worthy of worst-dressed lists, LeAnn quickly climbed the country charts and became an international star, but LeAnn admitted having issues with overeating. “I turned to food at times because I had nowhere else to get that love,” she said. LeAnn not only covered her weight with awkward outfits, but also dealt with the embarrassing skin condition eczema, which left her skin red and scabby. “In the summertime, it would be on my neck and arms and I’d wear turtlenecks to try to cover it up,” she said.

At 19 years old LeAnn married backup dancer Dean Sheremet and quickly began growing up into a slender, sexy superstar. Reportedly it was her new hubby who encouraged her to get into a workout and diet plan that included low fat foods and yoga. “It’s fun to exercise with a partner — we both push each other to be better,” she said.

In 2007, LeAnn appeared in Shape magazine and the former awkward kid worked the cover wearing a red, white, and blue bikini. She began gracing the red carpet in elegant designer gowns and threw away her cheesy denim getups that the old LeAnn would wear. Her full makeover from shy naïve wannabe singer to full-fledged slender vixen was complete when in 2009, LeAnn was rumored to be having an affair with her Lifetime movie Northern Lights co-star Eddie Cibrian, who was also married at the time.

Lady GaGa Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

Google Lady GaGa, and you’ll pull up pictures of the uber-popular singer with flowing brown hair, dressed like a Gap model. The diva-in-training, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, once lived a relatively G-Rated life, attending Catholic school as a kid and later dropping out of New York University to work as a songwriter.

Gaga eventually began headlining burlesque-like shows around downtown Manhattan, and later revealed that her dad could barely stomach her revealing outfit choices. “He couldn’t look at me for a few months…I was in leather thongs, so it was hard for him,” she said. These days, as her singles top the charts across the globe, Gaga works with a team of young artists and designers to achieve her avante-garde, skin-baring look. From bows made of hair to dresses constructed of bubbles to the constant absence of pants, anything goes in her “House of GaGa.”

Are you gaga for the singer’s extreme, avant-garde fashion picks, or are you a fan of her old girl-next-door look?

Christina Ricci Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

Back in the day, child actor Christina Ricci awkwardly rocked cute kiddie looks at red carpet events.  As she transformed from the sullen star of The Addams Family to a queen bee on the indie film scene, Ricci’s style shifted from teeny-bopper to the sleek, chic and hipper-than-thou trendsetter she is today.

Off the red carpet, the 5’1” actress – who has modeled for Louis Vuitton – suffered from an eating disorder that slimmed her body down to an unhealthy size. “I was a teenager going through adolescence and at one point I had a little anorexia phase and then I kind of ballooned,” she told Entertainment Tonight in 2007. “I feel my body now is the adult Christina and it’s what I should have come to a long time ago if I hadn’t been screwing around with my body so much.”

Are you into the adult Christina’s skinny, glammed-up look?

Toccara Jones Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

Toccara Jones first made a name for herself as a plus-size competitor on the third season of America’s Next Top Model. Even though she was the seventh person eliminated that season, her bubbly personality, confidence in her body, and stunning looks won her millions of fans – and a successful plus-size modeling career. She’s currently repped by Wilhelmina Models and has done work for Target and Avon, and posed on the cover of King magazine.

In 2005 Toccara lost 32 pounds as a contestant on VH1’s Celebrity Boot Camp, knocking her weight down to 173 pounds. By the time she made her second appearance on the flab-to-fab reality show in 2008, she had gained back 14 pounds. But she powered through the rigorous boot camp workouts, and slimmed down to 166 pounds. Most recently, Toccara flaunted her svelte bod in the pages of Italian Vogue, making her the first black plus-sized model to grace the iconic mag’s pages.

Do you dig Toccara’s new slender bod, or was her curvier look more luscious?

Evan Rachel Wood Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

It’s fitting that Evan Rachel Wood made a name for herself playing a hard-partying middle-schooler in the movie Thirteen, as the actress has always acted old for her age. Though her original look was that of a fresh-faced kid rockin’ preppy garb, she soon shifted her fashion picks so that her threads matched her reputation as “wise beyond her years.”

Her clothing choices became increasingly glamorous, gothic and gorgeous during her relationship with controversial rocker Marilyn Manson at the age of 20, and some accused The Wrestler star of mimicking his ex-wife, burlesque queen Dita Von Teese. But their break-up in 2008 did nothing to damper Evan’s dark and sexy style style (they’re currently back together), and she wowed the fashion world in a sophisticated Elie Saab gown on the red carpet at the 2009 Academy Awards.

Is Evan’s vampy look right up your alley, or do you miss the star’s fresh-faced style of yester-year?

Kim Kardashian Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

When exotic looker Kim Kardashian first hit up the Hollywood scene, she was just another Paris Hilton knock-off – crashing D-List events while flaunting her booty in barely-there outfits. These days, Kim’s chucked the cheesiness for a look that’s more classic, simple and sleek. But the starlet didn’t just swap out her trashy clothes for a chicer look – she’s also adopted a macrobiotic diet and slimmed down from a size 6 to a size 2 – all for the sake of looking fierce.

Kim also hit to the gym to help tone her eye-catching booty, after she grew tired of the frenzy her fanny caused. “I love that I’m curvy, but I’m on this major kick to try and lose weight, especially in my butt,” she told Radar magazine in March 2009. “I’m just so over it! When you’re posing on the red carpet and the paparazzi shout, ‘Turn around! Turn around!’ — it gets a little offensive.”

Do you prefer Kim back when she was an unknown, bootylicious babe or is her current slimmed down, high fashion  look more your speed?
