Remember when the bulk of movies were based on totally fresh, original concepts? Not so anymore, kids. In the past ten years, there’s been a full-on onslaught of ’80s remakes. From The Smurfs to RoboCop, moviemakers have stopped taking chances with interesting movies, in favor of mining hits from the past. We understand why, of course. What better way to get Generation X parents to take their kids to movies, than to lure them with childhood nostalgia?
GI Joe: Cobra Strikes
With Fast Five scoring far bigger numbers than any previous Fast & The Furious movie, it’s clear that a little Rock won’t hurt your action franchise. So it’s not shocking to learn that Dwayne Johnson may appear in the GI Joe sequel, possibly as the popular character Roadblock. There should be plenty of room for the former wrestler, as it’s been rumored that only a few of the characters from the first movie will be returning, with Channing Tatum‘s Duke the most likely. While the first film was a definite success, there was plenty of room for improvement—we’re especially glad no one’s calling for Marlon Wayans to come back—and J0hnson would be an easy way to go about that.
As for the franchise that made this all possible, the odds for a sixth Fast film are pretty good, with Johnson’s badass federal agent now firmly part of the musclebound family. “Well, it all depends,” he told Access Hollywood, on how much a— I could kick in that movie,” he told Access Hollywood. “I’m sure they’re getting ready to start writing away.” Yeah, somebody get that 5-year-old screenwriter on the case!
