Now that all the glitter has settled from the Golden Globes, it’s time for us to take a good hard look at how our eight contenders for the VH1 Celebrity Awards Season Style Points Race performed on the red carpet Sunday night. Our panel of judges — Yahoo! Entertainment‘s New York bureau chief Breanne Heldman, MTV Style’s associate editor Maud Deitch, and our own Ambika Muttoo and Sabrina Rojas Weiss — scrutinized their gowns, separates (!) and tuxes and came up with some interesting results. As you can see in our fancypants graph above, Les Miz stars Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne and Amanda Seyfried, plus Silver Linings charmer Bradley Cooper fared pretty well; while poor Jessica Chastain earned universal boos. Here our detailed assessments, in from best to worst.
Did you check out our exhaustive coverage of the Golden Globes yesterday? We’re hoping you did! We thought we’d give you a tiny break from all the information and wait till you came back refreshed. Because after any awards show, you know there’s going to be a mad after-party. One of the biggest ones that went down was the ” Warner Brothers Instyle Golden Globe Party” which seemed to be the really hot ticket for the night. Because pretty much all of young — and yes, hot — Hollywood showed up in droves. You’ll be able to see all the faces and the gorgeous dresses in our gallery below, of course. Julianne Hough wore a pink Jenny Packham gown which we far preferred to her Golden Globes Monique Lhuillier poufball. Conversely, we prefer Kelly Osbourne‘s Golden Globes Zac Posen gown to the fussy lavender dress (by the same designer) worn to this party. Freida Pinto wore a sequined Antonio Berardi Spring 2013 sheath, while Selena Gomez upped the hardware with a gold Atlier Versace minidress. Her bestie, Vanessa Hudgens also went for metallics wearing a Jenny Packham black sequin, long-sleeved gown with heavily embellished gold shoulders. Ashley Tisdale went in the opposite direction wearing a minimal blush colored Issa column which looked lovely on her. She accessorized with an L.K. Bennett ‘Alexia’ clutch and Jerome C. Rousseau strappy sandals. Nina Dobrev was lady-like in a 50’s inspired icy blue Oscar de la Renta frock. Enjoy the pictures!

Yes, we are most certainly reading too much into the psychology of Taylor Swift’s red carpet gowns at last night’s Golden Globes and Wednesday’s People’s Choice Awards. At the same time, it takes a lot of thought and effort to keep your ladies in place and looking good in a deep-cut V or backless gown, so TSwift had plenty of time to think about what kind of message she was sending. These are sophisticated, sexy looks that remind us she’s a 23-year-old woman, not a teenage pop-tart. So, is this her declaration to the world that she’s done with teenage boys like Harry Styles and Connor Kennedy? Let’s take a look at other recent red-carpet outfits to see if we can track her thoughts a little more…
“You wanted this.”
“I wanted this so bad.”
“And now you’re getting it.”
“And now I’m finally getting it.”
“It’s about f***ing time.”
“It’s about f***ing time.”
Lena Dunham had herself a NIGHT last night, didn’t she? Not only did the series that she created, Girls, win the Golden Globe for Best Television Series: Musical or Comedy, but Dunham herself upset the likes of Amy Poehler, Tina Fey and Julia Louis-Dreyfus to take home the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series: Musical or Comedy. As momentous as those victories were, perhaps her most triumphant moment of the night came before the opening credits of the Season 2 premiere of Girls on HBO even rolled. We’re referring directly to the image and the dialogue above, in which a naked Lena Dunham is getting down with a naked Donald Glover, giving a not-at-all-subtle “Eff you” to all the critics who blasted her last season for an alleged lack of racial diversity on her show.
Jodie Foster ignited an intriguing discussion about celebrity privacy last night at the Golden Globes after giving a kind of, sort of, maybe coming out speech that dealt more with the problematic idea that celebs have to share the details of their personal lives than any specific sexual orientation. Foster laughingly joked that she wasn’t about to put her life on display like Honey Boo Boo, but…what does that make Beyonce? In case you were wondering how in-depth Bey was going to go with her upcoming HBO bio-documentary Life Is But A Dream, consider the fact that the doc’s new trailer contains a sonogram of Blue Ivy. That’s about as in-depth as you can get without pulling out the colonoscopy photos. (Which we imagine Beyonce is saving for the amazing sequel!)
Now, this isn’t to say we have a problem with Beyonce showing off little prenatal Blue Ivy. Obviously we are fascinated by the intimate details of Bey’s life. “I always battle with, how much do I reveal about myself?” she muses at the beginning of the promo. If you ask us, it seems like Jodie Foster and Beyonce are just two sides of the same coin: both want to maintain their privacy, both want to control what the public knows about their life. It’s just that Beyonce happens to be okay with letting us peep the inside of her uterus. If she’s fine with it, so are we. Believe us, if Beyonce didn’t want us to know the particulars of her personal life, we would know absolutely nothing.
Between Glenn Close’s “drunk” moment, Tina Fey’s reaction to Lena Dunham’s speech and Tommy Lee Jones‘ super serious mug, the 2013 Golden Globe Awards were full of GIF-able moments. We browsed the Web and found the 10 best ones. Obvs, we think Glenn is #1. Scroll down for #10-2. (And if you have more to share, link ‘em in the comments!)

While goth was a major trend at the Golden Globes last night, another major direction that the fashion was inclined towards was the diametrically opposite — pastels. Shimmering nudes, pretty neutrals, and creamy white were all spotted on stars providing a wonderful foil to the ever-prevelant black. Leading this brigade was Amy Adams in a romantic nude Marchesa gown with a tulle fishtail complete with Tiffany & Co. jewelery. Isla Fisher also chose a nude palette but sparkled thanks to beaded embroidery that was sewn all over her love Reem Acra gown. Amanda Seyfried was another highlight in a shell, flowing, lace-panelled Givenchy Couture custom-made gown which had us sold. Megan Fox nailed it, as well, in a blush-colored, strapless Dolce & Gabbana dress with Jimmy Choo shoes, Lorraine Schwartz jewelery and a Salvatore Ferragamo clutch. Bringing in the sexy were, who else, but Jennifer Lopez and Lea Michele. J.Lo worked it like a pro, pouring her curves in a nude Zuhair Murad long-sleeved gown covered in ivory lace overlay. Lea went her regular route by showing off some leg, but still looked quite lovely in a white, halter-necked, textured Elie Saab gown and bag paired with Lorraine Schwartz jewels and Giambattista Valli heels. Heidi Klum also showed off some major stems in a one-shouldered white Alexandre Vauthier gown with gold, embellished trim.
Adding little washes of pastel color were Kelly Osbourne and Nicole Richie. Kelly chose a mint green, fishtail Zac Posen gown that somehow, ended up working with her lavender hair. She buffed up her outfit with Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, a Judith Leiber bag and Jacob & Co jewels. Nicole, on the other hand, was elegant in an vintage-looking, old-Hollywood inspired, pale blue and white Naeem Khan gown. She even worked in pale blue eyeshadow — how’s that for retro? Check out all our looks compiled in the gallery below and tell us who got the thumbs-up.

This is the part we hate about any awards show. In this case, we’re obviously talking about last night’s Golden Globes, of which a truly stellar best-dressed list has already been published by us. But didn’t really want to call this a worst-dressed list, because the women we’re enumerating are too gorgeous to be worst-anything. We’re just a tad disappointed in their outfits because we expect so much more from them. Like Taylor Swift, for instance. While her brown Donna Karan Atelier gown is quite nice, it’s nothing to write home about. Also wearing brown, was Lena Dunham, but we find her Zac Posen a bit prom-ish on her. Moving on to the orange bracket, perhaps the biggest disappointment is our girl crush Marion Cotillard. We have such high expectations of her. And while the color of her Christian Dior Couture dress is punchy, it doesn’t grab us. Nor does the lacklustre hair. No amount of her Frenchitude can convince us of otherwise. Also, wearing orange was Zooey Deschanel in an Oscar de la Renta ball-gown with pearls around her neck. It’s the same old, same old, basically. We need her to shake things up. Besides, is it just us, or does her outfit look … droopy? The lone pastel is provided by Julianne Hough‘s frothy Monique Lhuillier Pre-Fall 2013 gown which looks like it has gold confetti strewn over it. Someone needs to tell Julianne that she isn’t, in fact, a Disney Princess.
On to our three blues. Rosario Dawson and Jessica Chastain wore the same icy shade. But the peplum on Rosario’s version, in pictures, made the very slim actress look rather wide. Not flattering at all. Jessica’s Calvin Klein wasn’t flattering either. The fit, especially around the bodice looked clumsy. The third blue on the least is more a teal, provided by Julie Bowen. Her one-shouldered, Halston gown looked like a bolt of fabric that had been tacked on her. We love the armful of bracelets, though. Rounding up the list are the two black dresses. The semi-sheer Louis Vuitton gown on Rachel Weisz is just — the less said the better. She still has Daniel Craig as a husband so it doesn’t matter what she wears. And then, lastly, we have Kristen Wiig in Michael Kors. Too simple? Too — those cut-outs have us iffy. Better luck next time, all!

We love a dose of precious metal especially when it’s done so, so right. We’re talking the colors and not pure metal, though, which is even more interesting. Last night’s Golden Globes brought us the gifts of Kristen Bell and Emily Blunt who wore silver and gold, respectively, in a manner that invites spontaneous sighs of approval. Special mention has to be given to Kristen who is a couple of months pregnant and has taken awards show maternity dressing to a new high. Her silvery Jenny Packham Spring 2013 gown flowed over her like a dream and that crystal embroidery over the bodice and neckline is ethereal. Similar props have to be given for the makeup and hair. Emily’s embroidered gold Michael Kors gown — hurrah for the cut-outs — also floored us. The touch of ruby through her jewelry, highlighted as she wore her hair up in a bun, is such an unusual choice but it works so well.
While the looked amazo head-on, here’s the back-view. Kristen’s crystal trail adds the extra bit of glamour, while Emily’s cut-outs with the simple body-con silhouette keeps it minimal, yet incredibly sexy. Bravo, ladies!
