Guys, look. I’m a regular gal. I like to hide behind my glasses and I’m currently wearing cheap neon yellow sneakers, Gap jeans, and a t-shirt I stole from my BFF Sarah in 1999. So needless to say I was way nervous when tackling the ol’ “what to wear to my first Oscars red carpet” conundrum, which, I might add, is a wonderful conundrum to have. Luckily I was placed in very capable hands and hit up the Kodak Theater in this ridiculously gorgeous Halston dress and sparkly Aruna Seth heels, ie: my dream shoes. (Humblebrag: Pippa Middleton wore the same pair to the Royal Wedding reception.) Thanks to both designers for making my red carpet look come together!
Underneath all that glamorous goodness I had an army of synthetic fibers working overtime to keep things in line. I owe a heartfelt thank you to a serious set of Spanx, a ridiculous looking yet magical adhesive bra, and lots of double-sided tape. And it turns out I’m not alone! We also talked to the pros – Viola Davis, Diddy and Glenn Close, to name a few – about their gritty glam secrets, too.
There was one unplanned “duet” at the taping of VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul (airing Monday, Dec. 19 at 9/8c) that had everybody talking last night: 50 Cent and Chaka Khan. The powerhouse duo, more than two decades apart in age, showed up on the red carpet entwined in each other’s arms. When questioned by VH1 News correspondent Janell Snowden, fiddy explained: “I’ve always been a fan of Chaka Khan and I reached out and asked her if I could attend with her tonight.”
“We met last week officially for the first time,” said Chaka. “But we’ve loved each other’s music and we’ve loved each other’s art form forever.” The sight of the two looking like lovebirds sparked plenty of chatter on the web, with some sites like the notoriously inaccurate MediaTakeOut claiming the two are full-on dating.
While we all know the adage “love knows no boundaries,” we’re wondering if their cuddling was a playful way to make some noise while announcing a joint project together. “We’re working together,” admitted 50 Cent to MTV News. “We’re working on a project, hit music.” It will be “big things,” added Chaka. We can’t wait.
You know the old saying, “If you like it, then you should put a ring on it”? Well, hate to inform you but that’s so last decade, y’all. When VH1′s own Janell Snowden caught up with Glee stars Kevin McHale and Matthew Morrison on the red carpet of the Grammys last night, we got the firsthand scoop that something a little more kinky has emerged on the scene in 2011.
In case you missed his outfit last night, McHale — who you’ll know as the wheelchair-bound Artie Abrams on America’s hottest TV show — was wearing a holster-ish accessory over his shoulders. “It’s a little S&M meets James Bond,” he explained to Janell. “I’m promoting Rihanna’s new single ["S&M"]. I just need to see her and tell her we can put a leash on it.” Hi-yo!
Adam Levine, the dashing frontman of Maroon 5, set the internets on fire last week when pictures of him posing totally nude (!) to raise awareness for prostate cancer were released. Well, our saucy VH1 News correspondent Janell Snowden caught up with Adam and Maroon 5 keyboardist Jesse Carmichael yesterday afternoon at the Hollywood Palladium, the site of tonight’s Critics’ Choice Movie Awards. And while we were chatting with tonight’s CCMA house band after rehearsals yesterday, Levine’s exhibitionist streak washed over him once again, as he spontaneously ripped off his clothes and landed nearly naked in Janell’s arms! Fortunately, we had cameras rolling and we’ve got video of this hilarious (and sexy) moment above.
As a reminder, the CCMAs are airing LIVE tonight on VH1 at 9/8c. There will also be a red carpet pre-show, which will also feature the sultry sounds of Maroon 5 and is hosted by MTV’s Tim Kash and our own LaLa Vasquez, starting at 8pm. We’ll also be giving you an insider’s view of today’s show rehearsals, all the red carpet festivities and what’s going on backstage at tonight’s 16th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards on Twitter, so be sure to follow @TheFABLife, @VH1 and @unclegrambo (that’s me!).
If you weren’t following our Twitter feeds yesterday, here’s a small sampling of some of the pics we snapped during yesterday’s rehearsals. More to follow all day today. Enjoy!
We all know how popular the Jersey Shore is. Still, while interviewing bands at Austin City Limits yesterday we were a little surprised to find out how much Vampire Weekend loves it. In fact, we’re pretty sure these indie kings could write a dissertation on the MTV reality show. While each band member has their favorite self-described “guido” or “guidette,” it was lead singer Ezra Koenig‘s thoughtful analysis of why Jersey Shore works while other reality shows fall short that impressed us the most. According to Ezra:
“The Situation realizes he’s playing a character … everyone is self aware … with some reality shows it’s about making fun of people who are hapless and who don’t really know what’s going on. But the Jersey Shore is not really like that. Because everybody is funny. They have a sense of humor. They know when they’re being outrageous. For better or worse, nobody’s being exploited.”
Well said Ezra, and nice fist pump! See the full-sized image of drummer Chris Tomson showing VH1′s Janell Snowden his own Situation after the jump.
Tired of being disappointed by big-budget box office bombs? If so, consider trying an indie movie on for size the next time you get a hankering to catch a movie. If that sort of mood washes over you anytime soon, might we suggest looking up show times of The Romantics at a theater near you courtesy of your Samsung Epic™ 4G? Speaking of which, our own Janell Snowden caught up with the film’s stars Katie Holmes — she’s tall! — and Malin Akerman earlier this week at the film’s New York City premiere. Check out what they had to say to us below!
If you’re currently surrounded by people as you’re reading this post, now might be a good time to drag your laptop into an empty conference room and close the door. All set? Ok, good. Now you can squeal ’til your heart’s content and no one will be the wiser!
In anticipation of the September 3 television debut of Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, our own Janell Snowden recently caught up with stars Demi Lovato and Kevin Jonas on the red carpet at the world premiere of the film. Armed with her trusty Samsung Epic™ 4G, Janell asked the Disney stars how they each deal with screaming fans on the red carpet. Follow along below to see what both of them said!

Now we feel bad for yelling “stand up straight!” at Miley Cyrus while watching the Oscars Sunday. The Last Song star explained to VH1 News correspondent Janell Snowden she was in pain due to a broken foot that went castless for the big night. “The bottom of my foot is broken, I broke it while on tour and I don’t have my cast on and it really hurts.” On top of that, she was wearing heels! Forget slumping—we’d have tears streaming down our eyes.
See Miley’s game face in the gallery below.
VH1 News correspondent Janell Snowden had the enviable job of talking to Zac Efron at the Oscars Red Carpet on Sunday and she brought up our favorite Efron-related topic: his thick tresses. (Sorry if you were expecting us to say High School Musical or Vanessa Hudgens.) In our mind, Zac, who presented the award for Best Sound Editing, is single-handedly responsible for an entire generation of tween boy hairstyles and he dished on his (literally) dirty secret about caring for it — he’s not a big fan of shampooing.
