There’s a reason we’re bloggers and not rocket scientists or statisticians here — numbers ain’t our strong suit — but for the greater good, we decided to do a little counting, just to see where this year’s great movies stand so far in the Awards Season 2013 race. From the Gotham Awards to the National Review Board, the Spirit Awards to the Critics’ Choice — which was just announced today — we are keeping score now. And this is all leading up to Thursday’s Golden Globes nominations announcement.
This early in the game, with no different weight given to the different types of boards awarding nominations and kudos (or the different awards, be they for costume design or best feature), this is where the movies stand:
Silver Linings Playbook: 29 Lincoln: 26 Les Miserables: 23 The Master: 21 Zero Dark Thirty: 19 Argo: 18 Beasts of the Southern Wild: 17 Moonrise Kingdom: 16 Life of Pi: 14 The Sessions: 10 Django Unchained: 6
If nothing else, this should give you a good idea of which movies you need to add to your list before January!

What’s worse than flashing your underwear while getting out of a limo? Flashing your lack of underwear while getting out of a limo! We can now definitively say that Anne Hathaway went commando under the Tom Ford gown she wore to the Les Miserables premiere last night at New York’s Ziegfeld Theater. It’s not the first time she’s gone all scando-town on the red carpet (remember this see-through top from 2006?), but this latest wardrobe malfunction makes us nostalgic for the Paris Hilton-Britney Spears train wrecks of yore! Although to be fair to Anne, it’s got to be hard to navigate in those funky bondage heals. All in all, she definitely rocked the black widow femme fatale look to the hilt. Potential Catwoman redux, anyone? In an outfit like that, we’re thinking yes. Maybe with panties next time, though. Take it down to the gallery below for more!
Just when you thought stars were some alien life form visiting our planet just to briefly grace us with their beauty and talent, they come out with amazingly normal revelations about themselves, like this one from Les Miserables star Amanda Seyfried: “Everybody wants to have sex with [Channing Tatum],” she says in the January issue of InStyle. “And the only person he wants to have sex with is his wife, Jenna [Dewan-Tatum]. He’s the most loyal husband.” Wow, we just had that exact same thought five minutes ago!
Other really normal things about Amanda that prove she’s human, not the ethereal angelic being we’ve always assumed her to be: She says she’d never be able to lose weight the way co-star Anne Hathaway did for Les Miz. “I would lose my mind.” Us too! Amanda, we should totally be best buds. Read more…
Now that the Les Miserables premiere run has started, we’re really on the look-out since we know that both Amanda Seyfried and Anne Hathaway or going to go the crazy, avant-garde “serious” fashion route. So far, we’ve been right. Les Miz had it’s world premiere in London last week and both actresses picked looks that were off the beaten path. Aggressively ruffled and alternatively draped would be the right way to describe them. Anne seems to be really digging draped backs these days, as her white Givenchy Spring 2012 gown from London had that feature, and so does the current gown. The film premiered in New York last night and Anne wore a black taffeta Tom Ford Spring 2013 dress which also features a dipped, cape-back. She paired the gown with Fred Leighton jewels, deep red lips and a completely kooky pair of knee-high bondage-style heels, also by Tom Ford. We’re digging the shoes till the ankle. Not so sure what’s happening from the calf and higher, but it looks like something a James Bond character would use to holster her weapon under her dress.
We do think Amanda may have won the glamour stakes in this round, though. She looked like a dream in her Alexander McQueen strapless gown which featured a gold embroidered bodice and a flowing black skirt, with a tortoise-shell belt with a gold buckle. The makeup added to the drama as she piled her hair into a braided bun and accented her features with an extreme cat-eye. We’re floored! An Alexander McQueen clutch and Harry Winston jewels completed the look. Anne better bring it the next time, because Amanda’s going for gold!
So what do we think of the new original Les Miserables song “Suddenly”? Are you crying right now? Frankly, if we didn’t know better when we watched today’s featurette, we would have assumed it was from the musical! You only get to hear bits and pieces of the tune as director Tom Hooper, musical co-creators Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil, and producer Cameron Mackintosh break down the origin of the Jean Valjean song, but it is a tearjerker of the highest order.
Now, does “Suddenly” sound so mind-blowingly amazing that we want to give it a Best Song Oscar right now? No, because we haven’t felt that way since 1999 and “Blame Canada” was nominated from South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. Damn you, Phil Collins and your Tarzan soundtrack! Unless Disney decides to hastily release Tarzan 2 in the next few weeks, however, we think we can safely say “Suddenly” will probably bring in the win. Who else could possibly take it home? Adele’s “Skyfall”? “Learn Me Right” from Brave? Some sort of flute-based song from The Hobbit? You’re dreaming. Dreaming about Hugh Jackman being your kindly French adoptive dad! Seriously though, if something from The Hobbit soundtrack wins, we will start screaming and never stop.
It’s here, it’s here! Les Miserables finally premiered yesterday Odeon Leicester Square in London. As expected, both Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried chose outre designs that we’re not quite sure about. What do you think of Anne’s white satin Givenchy Spring 2012 Couture gown? We love the draped back and the beading but the billowing sleeves leave us a bit cold. Amanda was the yang to Anne’s yin picking a jet-black Balenciaga Spring 2013 look. It’s aggressively ruffled, in our opinion, although the white piping is a nice touch. We have serious follicle envy, though, because her hair looks incredibly lush. And Anne’s crop is totally working for her now that it’s grown out a tad. The premiere afterparty was held at the Camden Roundhouse, and the two actresses made a quick change for the do.
Anne is wearing an Altuzarra top and skirt which we’re totally digging. Even though she looks completely teeny in it. Like, ridiculously tiny. But so elegant, right? Amanda picked leather pants and a gorgeous bottle-green cape that looks chic, yet weather appropriate. But, what of Isla Fisher, you say? Where does she fit in, in this whole thing? Well, we saved the best for last because Ms. Fisher wore a white Willow Spring 2013 gown which almost caused our eyeballs to pop out. Because the whole thing — plunging bodice doesn’t even begin to describe it — looks like it’s held up by a prayer. Take a look for yourselves, by all means. Read more…
We’d like to start by saying that we love our work. We just love pizza, ice cream cakes and those Girl Scout cookies with the coconut a hell of a lot more. And that’s the thing that separates us from the truly great actors. Well, that and a zillion KFC buckets worth of talent! Uber-dedicated movie stars will sometimes go the extra mile and put their bodies through insane physical transformations that make us sore just watching them up there on the big screen. Many hit the gym ruthlessly to purge every excess pound from their body and slim down, while some (occasionally) take a few weeks to pack on the pounds for a role. If it were us we’d choose the pound-packing parts exclusively, but hey!
More recently Anne Hathaway, Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto took the tougher route and each shed an unbelievable amount of weight for their respective roles. Anne famously lost 25 pounds for the part of Fantine in the big screen adaptation of Les Miserables by eating two thin squares of oatmeal paste a day! We imagine that includes no dessert? McConaughey jettisoned his Magic Mike six-pack to play the HIV positive lead in Dallas Buyers Club, and his whopping 40 pound weight loss has lead some to wonder if he’s going too far. It’s got to be rough, but they certainly aren’t the first famous folks to go through such a dramatic body overhaul before going in front of the camera. Head on down to the gallery below for more thespians who took their bodies to crazy town, all in the name of their art. Sit down with a nice bag of chips and enjoy!
The first time I heard Les Miserables, I was 8 years old playing at my friend Ali’s house. She had an older sister and watched old episodes of Saturday Night Live, and was generally hip and cool in all the ways I was not. (I read Babysitters Club books under my covers with a flashlight at night and pretended my bike was a horse named Tabitha, who I kept in the “barn” of my suburban garage.) Looking back, I am fairly certain Les Mis was the first musical I ever heard, and it was the first time music really evoked something emotional in me. Like, I felt something. I’m not sure what an 8 year old really feels, but it was more than what I got listening to my dad play the drums on the steering wheel of our Peugeot wagon as Fleetwood Mac‘s Greatest Hits churned along in the tape player.
Uh….so maybe we were wrong to have scoffed at rumors that Anne Hathaway was going to drastic measures to lose weight for Les Miz. According her new interview with Vogue, the actress dropped 25 lbs to play the film’s impoverished Fantine, 15 of which came off due to a diet of, um, “two thin squares of dried oatmeal paste per day.” That cannot be healthy. “I had to be obsessive about it–the idea was to look near death,” Hathaway told the magazine. “Looking back on the whole experience–and I don’t judge it in any way—it was definitely a little nuts. It was definitely a break with reality, but I think that’s who Fantine is anyway.” Yeah….it’s the words “obsessive,” “death” and “dried oatmeal paste” that make us question our hopeful assertion that gossip about Anne’s weight loss was just that: gossip.
Okay, so let’s say Anne Hathaway’s weight loss for Les Miserables was, in fact, utterly extreme. Aren’t actors and actresses asked to totally transform their bodies for roles all the time? Matthew McConaughey certainly knows what we’re talking about.
We know we’ve been on the Anne Hathaway tip for awhile now (That hair! That sweater! Dem teeth!) but we especially felt protective of the lady when some would-be fans and critics started ragging on her about her vocals from the Les Miserables trailer. (We all saw the featurette! They sing those songs live in order that their voices break with emotion like that!) We especially want to rep Hathaway now that we got a taste of Russell Crowe‘s singing in the new Les Miz trailer that dropped today. It’s noticeably different than say, Hugh Jackman‘s or Amanda Seyfried‘s pipes. It’s not Pierce Brosnan in Mama Mia! bad…but it’s questionable at best.
Luckily the new trailer also has some delicious shots of Sacha Baron Cohen and Helen Bonham Carter as the fabulously greasy Thenadiers, so there’s a lot to love. And really, we love Russell Crowe too! We’ve had a crush on him since Gladiator, his beard looks great and we want to make-out with that giant hat he gets to wear. We just might not love his shout-singing as much as some other performer’s vocal contributions. Like, say, one Ms. Anne Hathaway’s, for example. Anne Hathaway is going to blow everyone way as Fantine! Mark our words!
