Side Effects Will Provide Even MORE Hot Channing Tatum Moments To Go With These 10 Favorites

Channing Tatum will heat things up in Side Effects

Channing Tatum‘s new movie Side Effects gets released today, which is sure to provide some much needed hotness in the wake of the snow-icane about to slam the Northeast. OK sure, technically the Steven Soderbergh flick also stars Jude Law as the male lead. But ever since Magic Mike, we’ve sort of had an unrealistic expectation for exactly how much of Channing we get to see in any given movie.

Matthew McConaughey Promises Dallas Won’t Sell Out In Magic Mike 2

One of the most pleasant surprises of last year was the fact that Magic Mike wasn’t just the frothy male stripper movie we’d been anticipating for months — it was actually a thoughtful Steven Soderbergh film with serious characters struggling to make it in Central Florida’s crappy economy. Matthew McConaughey’s turn as sleazy, self-serving and super charming club owner Dallas earned him plenty of kudos, too, including an award from the New York Critics Circle and an Independent Spirit nod. So we’re relieved to hear, straight from McConaughey’s mouth, that as plans for Magic Mike 2 are “legitimately brewing,” he would never take Dallas in any kind of cheesy, sell-out direction.

“In the right way [I would come back],” he told MTV News at Sundance last week. “It would be so much fun, but I would only be able to do to revisit Dallas if I really go, ‘OK, that’s what he would be doing.’ And Dallas can’t become like all of a sudden obviously comedic. I’d have to keep him the same tone. He’s committed.”

Steven Soderbergh Has The Best Anecdote About Matthew McConaughey’s Butt We’ve Ever Heard

Magic Mike Extra Tried to Put Finger In Matthew McConaughey's Butt

We don’t have to tell you how psyched we were for Magic Mike. It certainly wasn’t a secret how the interns had to spray us down with a garden hose whenever we blogged about it too much. That being said, even we were shocked by the story director Steven Soderbergh told while introducing Matthew McConaughey at the New York Critics Circle awards. “While we were shooting Matthew’s script sequence, one very impassioned woman extra pulled his G-string off and tried to stick her finger up his butt,” Soderbergh said out loud in front of other people yesterday. “And when I remembered that, I thought, You know, where I come from, you stand up for a guy who brings that kind of game to your movie.” Did we mention Soderbergh said this while welcoming McConaughey onstage to accept his Best Supporting Actor award for Magic Mike and Bernie? Amazing.

Of course, we don’t mean to imply that it’s awesome that an extra would try to stick their finger in anyone’s butt without an explicit invitation. We just think it’s great that Steven Soderbergh would bring it up in front of the New York media elite and Daniel Day-Lewis. “I don’t think she was trying to stick her finger up my butt,” McConaughey clarified once he took the stage “She was trying to put it somewhere, though, and you got it on film. It worked out.” Trying to put it somewhere that wasn’t his butt? What. Does. That. Even. Mean? Oh no, our body temperature is skyrocketing! Someone go get the hose!

Channing Tatum Made Us Laugh, Cry And Lust After Him, So He’s The #5 Celeb Who Dominated In 2012

Who would have thought that a funny name, an inauspicious start in an all-dance movie and a sordid stripper past would eventually be the perfect equation for a leading man. His star has been rising for a while but this was truly the year the world fell head over heels in love with Channing Tatum. Maybe because he turned his dance talents into a weirdly serious film about stripping called Magic Mike, maybe because he healed our amnesia in The Vow, maybe it’s because we can’t stop laughing at his scientific equations from 21 Jump Street, maybe it’s even because we saw him romance his real-life wife again in 10 years. Or maybe we just like that mug of his.

Dominating Moment: That would be the release and subsequent American obsession with Steven Soderbergh’Magic Mike, because even when they were wearing clothing, it was actually good!

Dominating on Twitter: Chan has just over 3 million followers. He also has an Instagram account under the name … ready? channingtatumunwrapped.

Best Appearances: Probably on the cover of People’s Sexiest Man Alive cover? Or GQ’s Man of the Year?  Maybe it was the Magic Mike trailer that showed his butt? Or, also, his stripping act on SNL?

What We Expect From Him in 2013: More gratuitous butt shots, please. Oh, yeah, also, his baby with wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum, plus the release of G.I. Joe: RetaliationSide EffectsWhite House Down. After he finishes work on a couple more (dozen) movies, he says he’ll be taking a little break. Maybe we’ll let him.

The 12 Celebs Who Dominated In 2012:
12. Ryan Lochte
11. Rebel Wilson
10. Frank Ocean
9. Damian Lewis
8. Lena Dunham
7. Blue Ivy Carter
6. Matthew McConaughey
5. Channing Tatum

Matthew McConaughey Stripped Down To Become #6 On Our 12 Celebs Who Dominated 2012

Matthew McConaughey went indie to dominate in 2012

In recent years, it was easy to forget that before he was a rom-com staple in films like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and The Wedding Planner, Matthew McConaughey broke into the industry in a little independent film, with his scene stealing performance as the slimy David Wooderson in Richard Linklater’s 1993 cult classic, Dazed and Confused. But this year, McConaughey returned to those indie roots. The hunky Texas native proved that he was more than just hot arm candy next to the Jennifers and Kates out there by choosing smaller films with accredited directors who stretched him as an actor. And the work paid off. He gave hilarious and nuanced performances in films like Bernie and this summer’s sexy success Magic Mike that gave him the acting cred we always knew he deserved. It doesn’t hurt either that McConaughey married his longtime girlfriend Brazilian bombshell Camila Alves at his Austin home. It all helped us see past those blindingly beautiful abs of his.

Dominating Moment: It’s safe to say that this was his performance in the surprisingly dark Magic Mike. He stole the show as Xquisite strip club owner Dallas, who had us at his gyrations in those leather chaps. We love how the notoriously shirtless actor winked at the audience with this bare-chested role and even nodded to his 1999 arrest as he played the bongos during the Tarzan striptease scene. By showing us that he’s in on the joke, the actor exuded self-effacing charm, even while betraying Channing Tatum’s Mike.

Dominating on Twitter: McConaughey isn’t necessarily known for his Twitter presence, but his 282,259 followers would probably say otherwise. The actor utilizes the site to promote his catchphrase-powered philanthropic endeavor the Just Keep Livin Foundation, promote his movies and show his Longhorn pride.

Best Appearances: McConaughey did his fair share of press promoting a record number of films this year in addition to Magic Mike (Killer Joe, The Paperboy, and Bernie to name a few) from The Daily Show to The Tonight Show. In June, he and Camila graced the cover of People, sharing photos of their laid back Austin wedding weekend. But we have to say, his scooter cooler race against Jimmy Fallon was pretty epic and is now our new favorite backyard barbecue activity. It just goes to show you can take the man out of Texas, but you can’t take the Texas out of the man.

What We Expect From Him in 2013: McConaughey already has several projects lined up for him that will continue to push him into a serious A-list actor territory. His role in Dallas Buyers Club already has people talking about his extreme weight-loss to play a man with HIV in the ’80s. We hope this is JUST for the movie and he’ll go back to his healthy six-pack ways! He’ll also be costarring with Leonard DiCaprio and Jonah Hill in The Wolf of Wall Street and is teaming up with friend Woody Harrelson for TV series True Detectives. We’ve loved seeing more of you, Mr. McConaughey, and can’t wait to see you continue to surprise us.

Silver Linings Playbook, Lincoln Top The Early Awards Season Tally – Will They Stay There?

Silver Linings Playbook, Lincoln, Argo and Les Miz are among the top nominees of awards season so far

There’s a reason we’re bloggers and not rocket scientists or statisticians here — numbers ain’t our strong suit — but for the greater good, we decided to do a little counting, just to see where this year’s great movies stand so far in the Awards Season 2013 race. From the Gotham Awards to the National Review Board, the Spirit Awards to the Critics’ Choice — which was just announced today — we are keeping score now. And this is all leading up to Thursday’s Golden Globes nominations announcement.

This early in the game, with no different weight given to the different types of boards awarding nominations and kudos (or the different awards, be they for costume design or best feature), this is where the movies stand:

Silver Linings Playbook: 29
Lincoln: 26
Les Miserables: 23
The Master: 21
Zero Dark Thirty: 19
Argo: 18
Beasts of the Southern Wild: 17
Moonrise Kingdom: 16
Life of Pi: 14
The Sessions: 10
Django Unchained: 6

If nothing else, this should give you a good idea of which movies you need to add to your list before January!

Jennifer Lawrence, Magic Mike & More: 7 Unstuffy Things We Love About The Spirit Awards

Jennifer Lawrence and Matthew McConaughey are among the 2013 Spirit Awards nominees

We always approach awards season with a mix of fear, dread and excitement, and one of our earliest questions each time around is: Will this year’s nominees feel like homework or fun? The Film Independent Spirit Awards nominees, the first of many lists leading up to the Oscars, has just been released today, and if this is a sign of thing to come, the answer is “fun.” We certainly haven’t seen all of the nominees yet, and by its nature, this is an awards show that often contains a number of obscure titles and actors, but it looks like the indie world is also on board with some of the crowd-pleasers we’ve fallen in love with this year: Among the Best Feature nominees are Silver Linings Playbook, Moonrise Kingdom and Beasts of the Southern Wild. Beasts‘ remarkable breakout star, 8-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis, roared her way to a Best Female Lead nod, along with Silver LiningsJennifer Lawrence. We’re rooting for Best First Feature to go to Perks of Being a Wallflower’s Stephen Chbosky and his producers. Twenty-nine-year old Zoe Kazan, who wrote and starred in Ruby Sparks, is the sole girl at the Screenplay party. But perhaps the best surprise of all is in the Supporting Male category, where Matthew McConaughey is nominated for playing strip-club owner Dallas in Magic Mike. Take that, everyone who thinks independent film is all about quietly contemplating the grass grow and talking in funny accents.

Happy 15th Birthday, Boogie Nights! Celebrate With These 15 Non-X-Rated Movies About X-Rated Things

Boogie Nights, Lovelace, The People Vs. Larry Flynt, The Girl Next Door

It’s hard to believe, for us olds anyway, that it’s been 15 whole years since we were first introduced to Mark Wahlberg’s (disappointingly prosthetic) Dirk Diggler in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights. Although, when you think about Wahlberg producing Oscar-nominated movies like The Fighter and Anderson directing serious fare like The Master, it does seem a long time ago that they were making this darkly comic look at the ’70s porn industry. If only Roller Girl Heather Graham had learned how to evolve her career in the same way.

As started to look back at the 1997 flick this week, we realized it’s part of a continued Hollywood tradition of taking advantage of the public’s lust for X-rated stories … that they can pretend to be watching for more, intellectual reasons. From movies about strippers — Flashdance, Striptease, Showgirls, Magic Mike — to “behind-the-porn” flicks like Boogie Nights, Inside Deep Throat and the upcoming biopic Lovelace, these flicks give their sexxxy subjects sad back stories, economic hardships and unfulfilled dreams. And doesn’t that make you feel better about going to the theater to watch really, really attractive people get naked?

By the way, people, there actually is nothing wrong with watching real porn and/or live exotic dancing, as long as you’re of age. Just so you know.

Channing Tatum Promises The Magic Mike Sequel Will Be “Bigger.” We Have So Many Thoughts.

Channing Tatum Confirms Magic Mike 2

Given the sheer amount of Channing Tatum butt delivered unto us by the first Magic Mike, it’s hard to know exactly where director Steven Soderbergh would go with another one. We imagine there would be…stripping, of course. And probably….dancing? And…Alex Pettyfer? Yeah, that’s the ticket. Either way, we’re just thrilled to know there’s a sequel at all! “Yes, yes and yes!,” Channing Tatum enthusiastically told Glamour U.K. “We’re working on the concept now. We want to flip the script and make it bigger.” Flip the script…and make it bigger? We have literally no idea what that means, but it sounds amazing. We do have a lot of ideas for possible Magic Mike 2 story lines, in case Chan and the gang are hunting for plot points:

  • The entire staff of Matthew McConaughey‘s Club Xquisite collectively decides to become firefighters and must respond to a huge conflagration at the baby oil factor. Meanwhile, we’re sent to jail for even writing that sentence.
  • Mistaken for regular cops outside a bachelorette party, Magic Mike and Adam have to go undercover as high school students, joining forces with Jonah Hill in order to infiltrate…oh, wait a minute. Wait one minute.
  • An origin story for Joe Manganiello‘s Big D— Richie. It’s a shot-by-shot remake of Wolverine, except it stars Joe instead of Hugh Jackman and no one is wearing pants.
  • Just a series of gifs of Channing Tatum opening an umbrella and thrusting.

But enough about us, what do you want to see out of Magic Mike 2? If they just reused all the footage from the first Magic Mike, do you think you’d notice? If you noticed, do you think you’d mind?

We Refuse To Believe This Channing Tatum/Alex Pettyfer Feud Rumor As It Crushes Our Dreams

Allegedly Channing Tatum And Alex Pettyfer Feuded On Magic Mike Set

We do not even want to deal with an rumored Channing Tatum/Alex Pettyfer beef today. We want to continue believing that Magic Mike is a documentary film about two good buddies who teach each other the best way to take off their pants…and the best way to take off their hearts’ pants. Sadly, according to Us Magazine, this is not to be; Pettyfer and Tatum reportedly had “massive fights on set,” and not the kind that take place in a baby pool filled with pudding while divorcees sprinkle them with dollar bills. According to their source, Channing even had one of Pettyfer’s scenes cut from the film out of spite. “He hates Alex. Channing thought Alex was a diva on set,” their source claims. Someone is referring to someone else as a diva…but not in a good way? Could this story possible get any worse?

The only way we could conceivably believe such a preposterous story is if we were to, um, look at all the evidence that Alex Pettyfer is sort of a brat. Between his allegedly snotty attitude on the set of I Am Number Four and Glee‘s Diana Agron allegedly being “terrified” of him post break-up, Pettyfer’s ‘tude is already stuff of budding legend. I Am Number Four? More like I Am Number Two. Because his attitude is like poop. Right, guys? Sorry; clearly we’re still reeling from this news. “Alex was a jerk to everyone during filming for no reason. He thinks he’s the star of the movie, not Channing or Matthew McConaughey,” their source continued. Whoa, whoa, whoa…what? Blasphemy! You need to get a gripe, Pettyfer, or you are out of the sequel. And if you don’t want to be a part of Magic Mike’s strip wedding, that is on you! That is on you!
