Gymnast McKayla Maroney may have been pretty mad when she had to settle for a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics last summer. But at least her priceless reaction inspired an incredible meme, which is worth far more than gold!
McKayla Maroney is finally getting her chance to catch up with fellow Olympic breakout stars Gabby Douglas and Ryan Lochte. The gymnast will be guest-starring on the CW’s Hart of Dixie this fall, the network announced yesterday.
“In the episode, Maroney will guest star as Tonya, a friend of Rose’s (played by recurring guest
star McKaley Miller), who comes to Rose’s defense,” a press release from the CW says. (That’s McKayley on the far left in the photo above, btw.) McKayla still hasn’t returned to the Kellogg’s Tour of Women’s Gymnastics since injuring herself on the uneven bars earlier this month. This seems like a pretty good way of keeping busy while she recovers.
For those of you not familiar with the adorable Hart of Dixie, it stars O.C. alum Rachel Bilson as a cardio-thoracic surgeon who winds up giving up her New York City life for the quirks of a small town in Alabama. It’s as renowned for its great fashion as its cute story lines, so we get the feeling this will be a super-fun shoot for McKayla. It’s no chance to have Ian Somerhalder eat your gold medal, mind you (we are still dying of jealousy after that pic of Gabby on the Vampire Diaries set), but we’re excited for her nonetheless.
And see how I wrote this entire post without making a “not impressed” joke? We’re making progress here, people.

McKayla Maroney Gives Thumbs Up After Impressive Surgery
From Ryan Lochte On 90210 To McKayla Maroney’s Meme: 12 Ways To Keep Your Fave Olympians In Your Heart
Great news for McKayla Maroney and fans who were hoping to see the Olympic gold medalist on the Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastic Champions: She emerged from an unspecified surgery on Thursday and was soon back to her tweeting and Instagram-ing ways. “I’M ALIVE!!!! hahaha just kidding..(; I just woke up from my surgery a little bit ago and was told it was successful!!#ThumbsUp #ThankGod,” she wrote in a caption to the above photo.
Both McKayla and fellow Fierce Five member Aly Raisman injured themselves on the uneven bars during the Kellogg’s tour stop in Ontario, California, on Monday. Raisman bruised her knees, but Maroney fractured a tibia, according to USA Gymnastics. We’re unsure if that was the reason for her surgery on Thursday.
Of course, a little injury wasn’t about to keep McKayla or her fans from keeping her infamous meme going. She retweeted this pic sent to her from fans.
The MTV Video Music Awards gave us some pretty epic moments. But out of all the things the show got right, one stands out quite poignantly for us. McKayla Maroney is finally impressed, guys! We knew the Fierce Five were going to make an appearance at the show. McKayla, Gabby Douglas and Kyla Ross even told MTV News how excited they were to present. But this only ended up building apprehension worthy of the Jaws theme song. Would McKayla continue to be unimpressed? Nuh-uh! She is impressed, and has even tweeted that out to the world so everyone knows it, writing, “Had the most amazing time at the VMAs.. That was one of those unforgettable kinda nights.” But before we go any further, can we reiterate how awesome she looked? They all did, landing the entire Fierce Five onto our Best-Dressed list for the night. McKayla also tweeted her appreciation of the show and all the famous faces she met, while she was there. Firstly, there was her encounter with Taylor Swift, as you can see above. McKayla tweeted that picture along with a message that read, “It was so amazing to meet and watch you perform tonight taylorswift13!! you killed it!! love yahh.” See? Another seal of approval! But there’s more. Read more…
Have we really not had a truly epic VMA beef since Kanye went totally Kanye and snatched Taylor Swift‘s mic in 2009? How time flies. Tonight the MTV VMAs honor those artists who have crafted a truly superior piece of visual art to accompany their music. But a well-crafted celebrity feud? Well, that’s even harder to come by. So we went ahead and predicted some fantasy VMA celebrity feuds for them, just to get the ball rolling! It’s like using The Secret, except you probably shouldn’t use The Secret to have someone yank out Lana Del Rey’s weave…
Forget the meme, McKayla Maroney expects to be very impressed with the VMAs tomorrow night. The whole Fierce Five U.S. women’s gymnastics team is set to present an award at the show, and things got just a little bit more exciting for them at a press conference for the event last night. Gabby Douglas announced that one of her faves, Lil’ Wayne, would be performing, and Kyla Ross announced that Katy Perry would be presenting the Best Pop Video Moonman. Afterwards, they told MTV News whom they’re most psyched to meet.
“For me it would definitely be Lil Wayne because I’ve always listened to him and he puts together these amazing lyrics and he’s just awesome,” Douglas said.
“For me, probably Miley Cyrus,” Maroney answered. “I’m very excited to meet her. I’ve been watching her on TV since I was very little and I love her music, and I’m just super-excited to get to even meet her.”
“I definitely want to meet One Direction,” Ross added, echoing many a teenage girl’s wish this year. “I’ve been listening to their music for a while, so it will be very exciting to hopefully meet them.”
Of course, they’re also hoping to give a Moonman to one of their most high-profile supporters. “I’d probably like to present to Justin Bieber,” Maroney said. “Let’s be honest.”

We’re pretty sure Eastwooding rivals McKayla Is Not Impressed as the fastest meme to grow out of a live event. Actually, it might have spread so fast that by the time we publish this post, it might already be over. For those of you who have been asleep for the past 12 hours, we’re talking about the blog posts, tweets and Tumblrs that sprouted just as soon as
your crazy old grandpa Clint Eastwood began to talk to an empty chair at the Republican National Convention, calling it President Obama. His hair disheveled, his speech rambling and clearly unrehearsed, the actor/director proceeded to pretend Obama was telling him to shut up and implied that he told him to do the anatomically impossible.
Someone launched the @InvisibleObama Twitter within the hour, and soon no chair was safe from being photographed and posted with the #Eastwooding hashtag. Here are our five favorites so far, but as we said, they’re bound to be outdated soon, so share your faves with us throughout the day!
1. First and foremost, the response from @BarackObama: “This seat’s taken.”
2. @InvisibleObama isn’t just a site gag, he talks politics too:
Summer’s nearly over, and what do we have to show for it? Some tan lines? A big dent in our reading list? A new fitness routine? Hardly. We do, however, have a whole new roster of celebrities we’ve been obsessing over for the past three months. We’ll count that as an accomplishment! Some, like Olympians McKayla Maroney and Ryan Lochte, were brand-new to our radar when they came on the scene in London. Others, like Miley Cyrus and Channing Tatum, have been around for a while, but this summer just seemed to be when they reinvented themselves into bigger stars that would not be ignored. Breaking Bad’s Anna Gunn and TLC’s favorite beauty queen Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson made our TV screens come to life, while Tom Hardy and Joe Manganiello made us have some pretty good dreams. Model Claudia Romani made her mark on this very site via the VH1 Celebrity Bikini Awards, and singer Carly Rae Jepson etched her song into our ear canals forever. Who made their way permanently into your hearts this summer? Peep our gallery, vote in our poll and give us your write-in candidates in the comments!

They’ve won a gold medal and some change, had their images printed on cereal boxes, been interviewed on every talk show from Letterman to Oprah’s Next Chapter, rung the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange and made dozens of other glamorous public appearances — what’s left for the U.S. women’s gymnastics team to do? How about something that’s a little more appropriate for their own teenage demo? McKayla Maroney, Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman and Kyla Ross are going to be presenters at the MTV Video Music Awards, MTV News announced this morning.
We love that this means the Fierce Five will be extending their fame into next month (the VMAs are on Thursday, September 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT). Also, we can only imagine all the great encounters they’ll have with the likes of fellow presenters Wiz Khalifa and Miley Cyrus, and just-announced performer Taylor Swift. I’ve got $20 bucks says they’ll do their best “Not Impressed” poses while meeting some of those pop stars. Maybe this can happen too.

Olympic gymnast/ace vaulter/Internet meme McKayla Maroney has taken her adorable “McKayla Is Not Impressed” face on the press tour. Last night, the Fierce Five delivered Stephen Colbert a pen in a way only they could (on their hands, with flips and split leaps)…McKayla was left less than impressed.
Then the pint-sized fivesome took their charm to The Late Show, where (while sitting on the world’s saggiest couch) they demonstrated what their Mememate had taught them in the art of looking less than enthused.
And if you need to waste an hour or three today, peruse the continuously updated McKayla Is Not Impressed Tumblr (brainchild of VH1’s own Gavin Alaoen!) Our own submission below, from last week’s Dougie lesson on the Today Show:
Sure, we enjoyed the Olympics, but this Tour de Smirks is proving to be even more entertaining.
