The 2012 MTV Movie Awards kicked off, quite appropriately, with an influx of vampires, witches, wizards and werewolves. We love how Vampire Diaries star Kat Graham, who was MTV’s style correspondent for the evening, seemed to be channeling old-school cult fave Elvira with her black gown — the deep-cut neckline and shoulder pads seemed more suited to a vampire than Bonnie the witch, and that slit invited her to strike an Angelina Jolie pose or two, which seemed like just the right tone for the night.
Also having fun with her outfit tonight is Emma Watson who posed in a short, swirly-patterned gray-purple-and-black dress by Tabitha Simmons before presenting the trailer for her upcoming Perks of Being a Wallflower.
Twilight star Nikki Reed was another early arrival, in a shimmery gold number, followed by the werewolf pack’s very own Julia Jones in an, em, eye-catching lime-green cut-out dress. Early contenders for silliest outfit of the show: the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, whose footy pajamas make us very curious about their set. Stay tuned for much more fashion commentary and news!
It’s all come down to this: Of all the steamy Best Kiss winners in the 20-year history of the MTV Movie Awards, you, dear fans, have decided that The Notebook and Twilight were the absolute steamiest. Not that we’re surprised, of course. We just wanted to give you a chance to say so. Now, though, as we try to see which of the two is the end-all, be-all of onscreen liplocks — and I’m nearly out of synonyms for kisses here, so thank goodness we only did three days of this poll — things are really unpredictable. Both are between two undeniably hot actors, both onscreen pairings lead to real-life romances, both movies are based on beloved novels. Both are either regularly re-viewed on DVD in your home or frequent stops on your weekend channel surfs. And both make our hearts pound and concentration difficult as we merely think about them right now.
A few things that differ: The Notebook kiss isn’t Allie and Noah’s first, the drama is in their reunion after suffering a long separation — the result of meddling parents and World War II. And the instant Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams run at each other in the rain you know they’re going waaaay past first base. Also, rain-soaked clothing basically trumps all.
Twilight’s kiss is Bella and Edward’s first, with all the initial awkwardness that entails. But there’s an added element of danger that makes things much more exciting, especially when they momentarily forget to restrain themselves. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are all kinds of hungry for each other, and we feel physical pain when Edward launches himself backwards to prevent himself from turning this makeout session in to a feast.
So, as we fluff up our couch cushions and get the popcorn ready for Sunday night’s MTV Movie Awards, you have one last chance to decide between these two delicious scenes. We don’t envy you this decision. Polls close at 5 p.m. on Sunday!

OME. Just editing photos for our MTV Movie Awards Best Kiss Smoochdown is raising the temperature in this office today. The things we do for you fans. Round 1 just finished this morning, and so we’ll say goodbye to worthy contenders Save the Last Dance, Brokeback Mountain, Independence Day and Shakespeare in Love in this grueling tournament to determine the hottest facesuckers of all past MTV Movie Awards Best Kiss winners. The victories leading up to this point were swift and decisive, but now it’s time to make some tough decisions for Round 2. Polls close Friday at 9 a.m. ET.
Blame It On the Rain: Spider-Man Vs. The Notebook
Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst defied gravity, bad guys and the admittedly creepy factor of kissing a strange boy in a dark alley for this Golden Popcorn worthy makeout sesh. In interviews, Kirsten Dunst said the rain made it feel like she was drowning too. But all that discomfort didn’t discourage the Spider-Man co-stars to carry on their romance off-screen while filming the 2001 flick. Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling’s drenched performance didn’t seem to require all that much acting in The Notebook — the two were also dating in real life. We really can’t blame them. But can we choose between them?

Once upon a time, long, long ago (OK, four years ago), the MTV Movie Awards Best Kiss category was hotly contested. That was before the Internet rose up and demanded that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart demonstrate their dangerous love before a live audience on a yearly basis. Looking back upon the list of winners of this prestigious Golden Popcorn award, we are pretty impressed. Aliens, star-crossed lovers, American Pie stars, Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen — a lot of famous smooches have taken the prize. Check out the montage so lovingly cut together by our friends at NextMovie and you’ll see. We are starting to get antsy as we await this Sunday’s big show, so we thought we’d entertain ourselves, and you, by determining which of the past Best Kisses is the hottest. (Note, that is hottest, which is why we’re leaving out the silly ones like those in Talladega Nights and American Pie 2, and the cutest of them all, My Girl.) We selected eight contenders for our Ultimate Best Kiss Smoochdown. Round 1 begins now and ends Thursday at 9 a.m. ET.
Spider-Man vs. Independence Day
Are we the only ones who decided to introduce upside-down kissing into our repertoire after seeing Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst’s Spidey and Mary Jane go at it in a dark alley? Not judging by their Best Kiss win in 2003. Will Smith and Vivica Fox are underdogs in this competition — not that their gorgeously lit kiss in Independence Day didn’t make us long for some excuse to make Will Smith say goodbye to US like that — it’s just that the 1996 flick hasn’t been clipped and replayed as endlessly online, so it’ll take a minute to jog your memory as to why they took home the Popcorn in 1997.
So we already know that Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield will be presenters at next month’s MTV Movie Awards. The next logical question was — who will be hosting? Luckily, we haven’t had to wait too long for the answer. We just got word that the host for the 21st Annual MTV Movie Awards is going to be … *drumroll* … Russell Brand!
MTV just announced the news and Brand, in his usual funnyman style, has also released a statement about being the main man of the show, saying, “This MTV Movie Awards will be more impressive than The Avengers, and you won’t have to wait an hour for someone to Hulk out.” What do you think, guys? Is Brand going to be an awesome host or will he end up being a little too OTT? Review his two stints as VMA host in 2008 and 2009 and get back to us with your answer. The MTV Movie Awards will air live on June 3 from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California.

Is this the dawn of a new era? The 2012 MTV Movie Awards nominations were announced today, and we’re not sure whether to be surprised about them: The Hunger Games and Bridesmaids lead the pack, with eight nominations apiece; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 and 21 Jumpstreet follow with six nods each; and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 is way down on the list with only two nominations. After so many years of Twilight mania ruling the show, does this mark the end of an era? Maybe. But it’s also pretty obviously the result of the nominees being chosen entirely by a panel of actors, producers and other insiders rather than by fans as it was last year, when Eclipse lead the pack with eight nods.
Of course, Twi-hards should be relieved to see Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in their time-honored slot among the Best Kiss nominees. As we predicted, they’ll be going liplock-to-liplock with Hunger Games’ Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence — along with Crazy, Stupid, Love’s Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, Deathly Hallows’ Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, and The Vow’s Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum. When VH1 News caught up with Hutcherson last month, he didn’t think he had too much of a chance to beat Robsten.
We’re still enjoying this little breather in between awards season madness and summer blockbusters, but our own Kate Spencer already has the MTV Movie Awards on her mind — specifically, the Best Kiss Golden Popcorn, which has been dominated by Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson for three years now. When she got a minute with Hunger Games cutie Josh Hutcherson at the NewNowNext Awards, she gave him the toughest of tough questions: Will Katniss and Peeta’s cave kiss rival any of Bella and Edward’s from Breaking Dawn – Part 1?
“I don’t know, they had a great kiss,” he admitted. “Theirs was so passionate. Ours was like, I was on my deathbed, wasn’t very sexy. I don’t know, we’ll see. Maybe. I’d be so lucky. One can only hope.”
Tom Felton might have just won the Best Villain award at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards for his portrayal of the nefarious Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter series, but in real life, his personality couldn’t be any sweeter. Our friends over at VH1 News caught up with the burgeoning hunk on the red carpet before last night’s big show and asked him about his old pal from Hogwarts, Cedric Diggory (aka Robert Pattinson). Felton praised his old pal as being “humble” not once but TWICE during our interview with him, and told us how much he was looking forward to catching up with his old chum at such a festive occasion.
Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are no longer in Hawaii, but that’s no reason for all the kissing to stop. Not only did the Bieb make a surprise appearance at the MTV Movie Awards to accept his Best Jaw-Dropping Moment trophy last night, HollywoodLife says the 17-year-old dropped a few more jaws backstage with the help of his girlfriend. “They made out for about three minutes and kind of weirded people out,” said an eyewitness. “They used a lot of tongue and acted like there was no one else in the room.” Wow, and we thought Bieber’s earrings were a shocker!
Despite the constant PDAs, the pair still aren’t saying too much about the relationship. “I am happy. I’m really happy,” said Gomez when E! noted she looked really happy with Bieber. “I just focus on my fans, music, acting and the people that make me happy.” As for the Bieb, you can read whatever you want into his #grateful shtick.
