Pound for pound, we think Kevin Hart was a really solid MTV VMAs host tonight. The comedian brought a much needed levity to one of the most earnest awards show we’d seen since…gosh, we’re going to say the Oscars. So it makes sense that Hart delivered the majority of the VMAs most memorable quotes, with a little help from Rebel Wilson and Drake. On a related note, maybe it’s for the best that KStew couldn’t make it after all…
This is always a tough one, guys. You’re supposed to take risks at the MTV Video Music Awards. You’re supposed to be a rock star. But sometimes that backfires. Sometimes you wind up looking like a Christmas tree, and sometimes you’re so scared of winding up on a list like this that you dress like you’re attending a ladies’ luncheon. That’s why we really, really hate to list some of the people we love both here. Taylor Swift, you looked lovely in that white suit — but like you were about to attend an event with your adoptive Kennedy family. And Alicia Keys, you were so close with most of your golden goddess look, until the part where it swallowed your legs. Katy Perry’s gown also could have been improved by a little tweaking. We would have been OK with Ezra Miller looking like a long-lost member of the Black Crowes — he is so awesome in Perks of Being a Wallflower that we love everything he does — but it was distracting from the beauty of Emma Watson’s outfit. And we’ve already mentioned Miley Cyrus borrowing Pink’s steez, but we haven’t yet talked about how she also seemed to be inspired by Morticia Addams. We’re also reluctant to put Nicki Minaj here, since she’s always in a category of her own, but there just seemed to be no unifying theme to her lace bodysuit chauffeur thingy. Our point is, nothing you’ll see here is unforgivable. It’s just, well, disappointing? Peruse the gallery and tell us what you think!
We loved Frank Ocean‘s Pond O’ Serenity and Ezra Miller‘s bolero business funeral suit, but if there was one bright, shiny, Australian moment that truly made us swoon during tonight’s MTV VMAs, it would have to be Rebel Wilson’s intro bit for “Best Female Video” with The Wanted. Why was it such a highlight? Well, for one, the Pitch Perfect star wasn’t taking herself seriously at all. You can’t make Kevin Hart be the only comedic relief in a two-hour show! In case you needed us to break down the reasons Rebel snatched our hearts with her Ruffles-covered hands, they would be…
We never thought about this before, but showing up to the same party wearing the same hair has GOT to be more embarrassing than showing up with the same dress, right? And here’s the thing: Pink has been rocking the pompadour for a while now, so Miley Cyrus must have known she’d look like that tonight too, right? So as much as we’ve been huge fans of Miley’s new haircut and color, we’re thinking she probably should have thought twice before styling it like this for a show in which she’s going to be presenting Pink’s performance. Or maybe not. Maybe she’s just fierce enough to make it her own. How about you decide…
So, we all saw Rita Ora‘s MTV VMA red carpet…pantsuit, right? On one hand, it’s fun and sequiny and young and right up Rita Ora’s alley. On the other hand, it’s a pantsuit. It looks like what Hillary Rodham Clinton would wear for her first night on the town after she and Bill decided to split up. Wait…okay, you’re right. That’s all still the same hand. The great hand!
We just wish the top was a little different. Less torso-splitting and/or boob-spreading. As for the sheer panel on top, we suspect it might be one of those situations where the wearer didn’t realize the effect flashbulbs might have on her frock. If you watched the VMA red carpet on TV, you may have noticed that Rita’s top was completely opaque. Not so in the photos. Not so at all. We guess the shin area is our favorite part, but you can’t rest an entire outfit on the shins! Would you just tell us what to think about it already? The MTV VMA fashion disasters are just getting started, and we have to move on!
On the fashion front, the 2012 Video Music Awards have been a night of surprises. Rihanna debuted an angelic pixie cut, complemented by a simple but sexy white gown, Pink‘s body looked bananas in a tight Stella McCartney frock and America’s favorite gymnasts flaunted their fashion sense, each in their own cute mini dress. Peek our Top 10 Best Dressed below… well…22 if you count each member of One Direction, The Wanted and the Fierce Five.
After weeks of speculation, at last comes the moment we’ve been waiting for … and waiting for … Amber Rose was photographed with fiance Wiz Khalifa caressing a very obvi baby bump on the red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards. We’d heard she was waiting to announce her pregnancy Beyonce style and there you have it.
Just last week, the rumors began to fly about the new little family. “Amber and Wiz unexpectedly got pregnant, but they’re really happy to be starting a family together,” a source told Radar. “Amber’s already had to make some big lifestyle changes, like not smoking cigarettes anymore. As a model she’s used to having a thin waist, so this is going to be an adjustment for her.”
Well, now that we’re seeing the bump, we think she’s got nothing to worry about — she looks cuter than ever. (And I’m not just saying that because I just started showing off my own bump this week too. Just following the trend, y’all!)
Rihanna shocked photographers waiting outside of L.A.’s Staples Center last night with a super short hairdo. The 24-year-old singer showed up to rehearse for tonight’s 2012 MTV Video Music Awards, and her long tresses were nowhere to be seen. The ever stylish Riri donned a Celine T-shirt, casual jeans and a pair of bright Air Jordan #4’s as she went to work out the last-minute kinks on her performance. Rihanna has been known to rock a short ‘do, but it’s been over two years since we’ve seen something this drastic. We’re into it!
It’s unusual that she didn’t mention anything about the image change on her Twitter, considering how outspoken she is on the social media service. Maybe the look was just a wig to disguise the superstar and make moving around easier as she prepped to perform. It does look suspiciously like the hair piece she wore for her Armani print ads last year. Or maybe she’s just been too busy rehearsing and traveling for the VMAs to get around to it. We guess we’ll see tonight as she opens the awards show by doing a sure-to-be-killer version of her remix “Cockiness (Love It)” with A$AP!
As if earning a gold medal and appearing on every talk-show and magazine in existence weren’t enough, Gabby Douglas has stepped up her nonstop media tour this week. She was with McKayla Maroney and Kyla Ross in Los Angeles on Tuesday for a pre-VMA press conference, where Gabby got to announce Lil Wayne’s performance. Then she hopped on a plane to Charlotte, North Carolina, where she, Aly Raisman and Jordyn Wieber helped promote the Kids’ Health Goes Gold initiative by day and then she led the pledge of allegiance at the Democratic National Convention in the evening. We assume she’s en route back to L.A. for tonight’s VMAs. That in itself seems like enough on the plate of a 16-year-old, but today comes news of one more project in the works: She’s publishing a memoir.
People reports that HarperCollins will publish Grace, Gold and Glory, My Leap of Faith, the story of how Douglas grew up in Virginia and faced the tough decision to leave home to train for the Olympics. “Even before I competed in the Olympics, I always wanted to write a book,” she said in a statement about the memoir, which is set to hit shelves in December.
“Gabby Douglas shines even more brightly than her Olympic gold medals,” HarperCollins senior vice president Lisa Sharkey said. “The reason is her inner strength and strong faith.”
So what should be next for the gymnast? Acting gigs? Hosting her own talk show? More gymnastics? Maybe, possibly, enjoying being a teenager for a minute? Nah. That hardly sounds as fun as meeting Lil’ Wayne.
