Sure, we watch the MTV Video Music Awards to see our favorite artists pick up a trophy or two for their work in the past year and to watch some phenomenal performances. But there’s a big reason it’s way more fun to watch than, say, the Grammys: Having this many stars in such a party-hard atmosphere always leads to some of the best unscripted moments on TV. A whole lot of those moments are simply fun, but often they turn into car-wreck spectacles. Of course, the latter is what we end up remembering in the decades that follow. From Andrew Dice Clay’s off-color jokes that got him banned from MTV for life to Michael Jackson’s misunderstood birthday cake to Kanye West’s infamous “Imma let you finish” speech, we love those moments that make us cringe in our seats, anticipating the embarrassment the perpetrators probably won’t feel until the morning after. While we eagerly await a whole new batch, here are our top 10 most cringeworthy moments of VMA history:

The MTV Video Music Awards are known for having one of the most varied guest lists in showbiz, creating mind-blowingly random Hollywood juxtapositions. Many unexpected duos are tapped to present awards together, and sometimes folks are feeling friendly and just want a picture with their secret celeb crush. These unexpected pairings sometimes could be the musical collaboration of our dreams, much like Lady Gaga and Cher appearing side by side (with a side of beef) back in 2010. Or they could be the nightmare we wish would end, like the legendary meeting of Kanye West and Taylor Swift in ’09. Who would have thought teen sweetheart Mandy Moore would want to be hugged up with the creepy Marilyn Manson? The VMAs have given us some insanely wonderful worlds colliding moments over the years, so we’ve made a gallery to celebrate our favorite. Head down bellow to check out our 20 Most Unexpected VMA Pairings of All Time. Let’s hope we can have another 50 Cent and Paris Hilton moment this Thursday!

Forget the meme, McKayla Maroney expects to be very impressed with the VMAs tomorrow night. The whole Fierce Five U.S. women’s gymnastics team is set to present an award at the show, and things got just a little bit more exciting for them at a press conference for the event last night. Gabby Douglas announced that one of her faves, Lil’ Wayne, would be performing, and Kyla Ross announced that Katy Perry would be presenting the Best Pop Video Moonman. Afterwards, they told MTV News whom they’re most psyched to meet.
“For me it would definitely be Lil Wayne because I’ve always listened to him and he puts together these amazing lyrics and he’s just awesome,” Douglas said.
“For me, probably Miley Cyrus,” Maroney answered. “I’m very excited to meet her. I’ve been watching her on TV since I was very little and I love her music, and I’m just super-excited to get to even meet her.”
“I definitely want to meet One Direction,” Ross added, echoing many a teenage girl’s wish this year. “I’ve been listening to their music for a while, so it will be very exciting to hopefully meet them.”
Of course, they’re also hoping to give a Moonman to one of their most high-profile supporters. “I’d probably like to present to Justin Bieber,” Maroney said. “Let’s be honest.”

It can’t be a coincidence that Beyonce was born right in the heart of MTV VMA season. The Queen Bey is just as much a part of the show as the Moonman, putting in a showstopping appearance nearly every year for over a decade. It’s fate, you guys! Or should we say, destiny. Ever since her Destiny’s Child days, she’s lit up the stage with a killer combo of jaw-dropping outfits and fierce dance moves. And who could forget last year when she announced on the red carpet that she was expecting little Blue Ivy Carter? The diva legacy lives on. We wonder what surprises she’ll have for us on Thursday night! Beyonce has become an icon of the awards show, and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate her 31st birthday than by checking out her hottest VMA outfits through the years. Enjoy!

Since Madonna first writhed on the floor back in 1984, the MTV Video Music Awards have been the home for expressive musicians to show off their wildest fashion statements for the world. But thanks to the likes of Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj, we feel like we’re in a golden era of completely wackadoodle VMA costumes — and we’re loving every second of it. As we gear up to witness a whole new round of eye-popping styles at Thursday night’s show, we thought we’d take a look back at the past 28 years of craziness. There are the ones everyone remembers, like Marilyn Manson’s corset, Lil’ Kim’s purple pasty, Christina Aguilera’s showgirl frock and Gaga’s infamous meat dress. Our research also unveiled some forgotten gems, like David Lee Roth’s Hawaiian chic, Big Boi’s Muppet pants, and a particularly horrendous pastel tie-dye thing that we hope Justin Timberlake regrets as much as we do. Flip through the gallery below at your own risk…

They’ve won a gold medal and some change, had their images printed on cereal boxes, been interviewed on every talk show from Letterman to Oprah’s Next Chapter, rung the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange and made dozens of other glamorous public appearances — what’s left for the U.S. women’s gymnastics team to do? How about something that’s a little more appropriate for their own teenage demo? McKayla Maroney, Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman and Kyla Ross are going to be presenters at the MTV Video Music Awards, MTV News announced this morning.
We love that this means the Fierce Five will be extending their fame into next month (the VMAs are on Thursday, September 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT). Also, we can only imagine all the great encounters they’ll have with the likes of fellow presenters Wiz Khalifa and Miley Cyrus, and just-announced performer Taylor Swift. I’ve got $20 bucks says they’ll do their best “Not Impressed” poses while meeting some of those pop stars. Maybe this can happen too.

People are getting their Twitter on about Nicki Minaj’s VMA pre-show performance, and no, it’s not due to Nicki’s Jane Jetson-meets-S&M superhero costume. It’s Minaj’s co-performer Will.i.am who has Twitter users’ undies in a twist, some of whom are calling Willi.i.am’s jet-black VMA make-up “black face.” Not that he’s taking it sitting down, mind you.
Tweeted Will.i.am in response to the accusations, “1st. just because I where all black including head mask as expression and emphasize my outfit, it shouldn’t be looked at as racial…” Continued the singer, “Let go of the past. there are far more important things 2 bark about. (Jobs, health, education) not a black man wearing all black everything” See, we thought it was pretty clear that Will’s outfit was a statement about time-traveling scuba diplomat ninjas. But then again, everyone’s entitled to their own opinion.
Will.i.am even took the time to respond individually to a particularly vicious tweet: “Are you guys serious? my outfit set black people back 100 yrs’ choose your twits wisely. no education sets people back, no jobs, bad health.” We should hope none of the Black Eyed Peas have the power to set the African-American community back 100 years, especially with one bizarre, probably very sweaty costume. If any of them can do that then we as a society seriously need to check ourselves before we wreck ourselves.
Our eyes still haven’t quite adjusted after last night’s .
4. We give Lindsay Lohan a ton of credit for gamely making fun of herself during the opening segment of the show with Chelsea Handler by telling Handler, whose alcohol-monitoring anklet/Cheesecake Factory buzzer was set off, “Do you think anyone wants to work with a drunk? Take it from me, they don’t… Wake up Handler! Pull it together!” Every time we think she’s committed career suicide, she manages to win us back over somehow. She’s charming, that Lindsay. We seriously hope she keeps it together.
5. We might be the only ones who caught this (actually, someone else noticed too), but did you see when 30 Seconds To Mars was about to accept their award for Best Rock Video and the microphone girl tried to hand Jared Leo a mike to accept the award and he didn’t take it? Instead, he took one from one of the Jackass guys and, audibly, Microphone Girl, annoyed that her one and only job was rendered futile, said INTO the mike she was still holding “Well, that was retarded.” Way to go, Microphone Girl. Keepin’ it classy. Also, you’re mike is on.
