The Olympics Closing Ceremony: Who We Were Most Excited To See

Spice Girls Performing At The Olympics Closing Ceremony

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE! Sorry, guys. We really did get excited seeing the Spice Girls reunited while performing at the amazing spectacle that was the Olympics Closing Ceremony yesterday (or this morning, depends on what part of the world you’re in.) Especially went whizzing around in those cool, lit-up minis! And they weren’t the only ones we squeed at. The whole playlist of sorts had moments we were giddy about. How about Take That? We used to swoon over them back in the day, and seeing them together brought back all those memories. We only wish that Robbie Williams had joined them, but we’ll take what we can get. We got One Direction for the swooning-in-this-day-and-age, so we’re all good!  George Michael busting out moves was awesome — did you sing Freedom out aloud too? And how about them supermodels, huh? All in glittering gold gowns. Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Stella Tennant, Karen Elson and the rest of the finest of the Brit fashion crop did make a huge impression.

We have to say that Fatboy Slim busting out Rockerfella Skank was a massive moment for us too. Acid house at the Olympics? Yes, please! And while we’re at it — what did you think of Russell Brand‘s performance? We love him, so we were more than happy to see him up there. More than anything, his inclusion showed just how much thought the organizers put into this ceremony. They tried to be together everything quintessentially British — fashion, comedians, music, dancing — and we think they totally succeeded. Look through our gallery to have a look at who else we were excited to see, and let us know if you agree!

Neymar, Budding Soccer Superstar, Is Today’s Olympian To Watch

As Brazil takes on Mexico for the men’s soccer gold medal today at 10 a.m. ET, we’re sure you won’t have a problem keeping an eye out for 20-year-old soccer prodigy Neymar Da Silva Santos Junior, commonly known as simply Neymar. Since Americans are traditionally out of the loop with soccer a.k.a. football, here are seven facts to get you acquainted with one of the game’s brightest young stars.

1. At just 11 years old, Neymar joined Brazil’s legendary Santos FC Academy and nearly left at 14 to join Real Madrid, but Santos paid about $495,000 to keep him on his home turf.

2. He has a flair for the dramatic. Neymar’s often criticized for his tendency to dive in hopes of being awarded a foul. Soccer legend Pelé once said (somewhat) in his defense, “He is a player with a body that can’t take a lot of hits. A lot of times he will fall because he can’t do anything else, but he was overdoing it.”

To be fair, he is quite the featherweight at 5’9″ and 132 lbs. And according to this headband – 100% Jesus.

Sarah Burke Dead At 29, Mourned By Fellow Athletes

Just as the stars are arriving in a little Utah ski resort called Park City for the Sundance Film Festival, snow lovers the world over are mourning the death Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke, who died today at 29 from injuries sustained in an accident on a half pipe in Park City last week. She suffered a ruptured vertebral artery, which led to a severe intracranial hemorrhage, a family spokesperson told Reuters.

Immediately after the news broke, the Twitterverse was flooded with messages of support for Sarah’s friends and family, with several messages coming from fellow X Games champs and Olympians.

“So saddened by the news about Sarah Burke. RIP my thoughts and prayers go out to all family and friends and the skiing community,” Olympic skier Julia Mancuso tweeted.

Shawn Johnson: Dancing With The Stalkers

Dancing With The Stars makes fans get all kinds of crazy. Unfortunately, this time, it has turned slightly ugly with alleged Shawn Johnson stalker Robert Michael O’Ryan hopping the fence at CBS studios while the 17-year-old Olympian was getting her dance on and taping the hit reality show. Scary!

Robert was arrested and Shawn’s mom Teri filed for a restraining order pronto, which alleges that 34-year-old Robert is mad psycho!

“He believes that she speaks to him personally through the television set and through ESP and that they will have a child together, he stated he would be with her no matter what,” Teri wrote in a declaration.

Wait, it gets worse. Los Angeles police found all kinds of stalker equipment in his car, like “a loaded .45 handgun, a loaded shotgun, and materials classically used for kidnapping including duct tape, zip ties [and] a map to the victim.” Also found were “love letters, clippings, and other information.” Yikes!

Little Shawn Johnson “is in fear for her life, she is extremely upset by this incident and her entire family and those around are all extremely concerned and fearful that [O’Ryan] might try to kidnap her or harm her in an effort to make good on his statements,” the document reads.

Luckily the temporary restraining order was granted and Robert must stay 100 yards away from Shawn, her mom, and her dancing partner Mark Ballas.

There will be a hearing April 14th.

Who to get advice from on a sensitive matter like stalkers? In November, American Idol host Paula Abdul‘s stalker was found dead in front of her home. See what Paula had to say about Shawn’s scandal. [Source: E! Online; Photo: Getty Images]
