Slumdog Co-Stars Find Love In Real Life

It was bound to happen – two young stars, a surprise hit movie, an overwhelming and intense surge of fame. The natural thing for them to do is seek solace in each other’s understanding arms (and beds, natch). That’s exactly what’s going on between Dev Patel and Frieda Pinto, according to their Slumdog Millionaire co-star Anil Kapoor. “They definitely make a great pair,” the actor said. “Both of them look very good together.”

While that’s not total confirmation, we’ll take it – as everyone goes nuts for a good love story and we’ve already seen their movie. Pics have also leaked of the fiance Frieda was apparently keeping under wraps. The starlet should feel no shame for ditching her dud of a guy for her hunky on-screen love. Brad Pitt copyrighted the move in 2004, so it’s totally acceptable!  [Photo: WireImage]

Oscars Dispatch: Essence Celebrates Black Women In Film

Los Angeles is filled with the hype of the upcoming Oscars on Sunday, and the stars are already getting their party on. Thursday the Beverly Hills Hotel was buzzing with Oscar preparations as it hosted the Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon.

Guests like Taraji P. Henson snapped up gigantic gift bags, which were actually large brown duffle bags filled with goodies, while celebrating Black Women in Hollywood. Halle Berry, dressed in a short fitted gold gown mingled with Taraji and actress Dianne Carol.

Although the event celebrated all Black Women in Film, it clearly focused on Best Supporting Actress nominee Taraji, who brought along her mom. The actress looked smashing in a gray short dress with black piping while she mingled with guests and cracked jokes.

Although the party was quite enjoyable, guests appeared frustrated as they tried to leave the hotel. The valet line was fifty people deep and guests became extremely agitated while waiting for their wheels.

Not Taraji, however. The lady of the lunch whisked past the waiting guests into her awaiting black town car and sped off.

After all the guests had long gone, hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons stayed around to get some business meetings done. While meeting with a blonde woman and two gentlemen at the Beverly Hills Hotel’s prestigious Polo Lounge, Russell appeared to be discussing an upcoming business venture. [Photo: Getty Images]

Oscars Dispatch: Stars Are Already In Party Mode

The Oscars aren’t until Sunday, but celebrities are already in party mode. Thursday night stars came out for an intimate soiree at the 27-acre home of billionaire real estate tycoon Jeff Greene, who threw a star-studded bash to celebrate his wife’s birthday.

Russell Simmons, Paris Hilton, Brett Ratner, Bai Ling and other celebs munched on Asian-themed cuisine like Kung Pao chicken, rice, and stir fry vegetables while enjoying the breathtaking views of the property, which features a reflecting pool and vineyard.

Paris Hilton, pictured above before the party, arrived shortly after 10pm with a posse of gal pals. Two blondes and one brunette followed Paris, who was decked out in a short sparkly pink dress, rhinestone heels, and tiara, around the party while she mingled with fellow guests including Nikki Haskell and Kato Kaelin. Paris posed for photos with Jeff’s wife and joined the guests in serenading her happy birthday as a massive chocolate cake was wheeled out. Paris walked around the party laughing, giggling, and whispering with her posse.

After the candles had been blown out, guests started clearing out of the Mediterranean style mansion. But hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons stayed well past 12:30am, despite telling Scandalist that he’s “in town for work.” [Photo: FilmMagic]

Oscars 101: History Of The Statuette

The night before the Oscars, nominees like Mickey Rourke, Taraji P. Henson, and Anne Hathaway may fall asleep at night dreaming of receiving a much-coveted Academy Award. But what is the story behind this 13 and 1/2-inch golden man who is surrounded by so much hype?

The Oscar statuette is officially named the Academy Award of Merit. The award was born in 1928 and depicts a knight holding a crusader’s sword while standing on a reel of film. The reel has five spokes — representing actors, writers, directors, producers and technicians. The award was originally bronze plated with 24-karat gold on a Belgian Black Marble base. It weighed eight and a half pounds.

Currently fifty Oscars are made every year by Chicago manufacturer R.S. Owens. No one knows for certain how the name “Oscar” came about, but one theory is that Margaret Herrick, an Academy librarian who eventually became executive director, believed it looked a lot like her uncle Oscar. The Academy began using the name Oscar in 1939.

In 2000, 55 Oscar statuettes were stolen while being transported from Chicago to Los Angeles, but 52 were recovered in a nearby trash can nine days after the robbery. The remaining three turned up randomly three years later in a drug raid.

Luckily they were found. Making the statuette is no easy feat. It takes 12 people and 20 hours to make one statue! [Source: Oscars.org]

Wrestler Actor Scott Siegel Arrested For Steroids

Scott Siegel made his film debut as a steroid dealer in the Oscar-nominated film The Wrestler, and the role may wind up his last. Siegel, who spent 1999 to 2003 in prison for steroid trafficking, was spotted picking up a suspicious package by DEA officers in New Rochelle Wednesday evening. Cornered, Siegel rammed three police vehicles with his car before leading authorities on a high-speed chase. After abandoning his car, Siegel continued to flee on foot and struggle with officers upon capture. He now faces charges for assaulting a federal officer as well as steroid distribution. Think Scott might get a mention along with Loki if Mickey Rourke gives an acceptance speech on Sunday?
