Allow me to get cheesy here for a moment.Charlize Theron has an energy about her, guys. I interviewed her tonight at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards — my second time chatting with Charlize – and on both occasions it has felt like I am talking to a zen master. She’s just got this vibe — peaceful yet fierce, vibrant yet calm. And man, you can just tell she’s going to kick so much ass as the Evil Queen in Snow White and The Huntsman.
The film features two strong female leads, with Charlize battling Kristen Stewart’s Snow White. The Oscar winner told me the two clicked instantly. “We had amazing chemistry, right off the bat,” she said. “We just really hit it off.”
“We had a great time doing it,” Charlize said of the film. “I hope people enjoy it as much as we did.” Not to worry — we’re pretty sure we’re going to love it.
Elizabeth Reaser is amazing as Beth in Young Adult. Understated, honest, confident and cool; she’s the perfect complement to Charlize Theron‘s brash, relentless Mavis. (Have you guys seen it? Go go go!) We caught up with the actress and Twilight alum at the LA premiere of the Jason Reitman-directed film (which as been nominated for three Critics’ Choice Awards) and chatted with her about her character and New Year’s resolutions. And then of course we had to ask her this: having worked with both Charlize and Kristen Stewart, which actress does she think will kick more ass inSnow White and the Huntsman?
Look, we’re stumped on this question ourselves. Obviously we have a little bit of a KStew fangirl thing going on (okay, it’s more like ‘a lot bit’) and she looks amazingly tough and fearless as Snow White. Girlfriend leads an army on horseback, for crying out loud! But Charlize radiates badassness both in the SWATH trailer and in real life, and her kickassery skills are second to none. Is it possible that they will kick equal amounts of ass? Could it be? Knowing these two amazing ladies, we don’t doubt it. Check out Liz’s very awesome answer above. (Unrelated: how gorgeous is her hair? Can we have hair like that, please?)
You know what excites us most about Snow White and the Huntsman? That it revolves around two incredibly strong women, neither of whom use overt sexuality as part of their character. From this new trailer for the film, out in Mexico, it’s clear that both Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron are down to kick some serious butt, and the supporting characters are – gasp! – men. How cool is that? We love that Snow White leads an army into battle while wearing actual armor and not a metal mesh bikini. We love that the Evil Queen can crush a human with the touch of her hand. We love seeing both the protagonist and antagonist played by women and we can’t wait to see them duke it out to the death.
Judging from the trailer alone this seems to be a step in the right direction for Hollywood; so often women are portrayed as frazzled, hysterical and barely dressed (see: What To Expect When You’re Expecting trailer, out today). It’s about time we women got some ass-kickers in our court.
As she makes the rounds to promote Young Adult (in select theaters today, opening wide next week), Charlize Theron has been playing mock offended by the fact that director Jason Reitman wanted her and only her to play the alcoholic former prom queen who comes back to her hometown to steal her high school boyfriend away from his wife and baby. But between this and her upcoming turn as the Evil Queen in Snow White and the Huntsman (not to mention her Oscar-winning role as a serial killer in Monster), the actress doesn’t really seem to like playing nice.
“I’m not a big fan of sympathy,” she told TheFABlife at the New York premiere of Young Adult. “For me, the understanding is the biggest part of it. I think if you can understand the character, then I’m happy with that.”
Then again, we doubt Theron would go in for a completely flat, Disney-style villain with no clear motive for seeking to destroy our beloved Kristen Stewart other than just being, well, evil. Read more…
“I’ve done some small things with [Kristen], but we’re about to shoot our big showdown, and fingers crossed for me,” she said. “It’s the big battle. I’m just really, really, really hoping I get to kill her. That is how the story ends up, right?” Read more…
We all know by now that Lily Collins is playing sugar-sweet Snow White in Mirror, Mirror, while Kristen Stewart slaps on a scowl to play the Disney princess as an embattled warrior in Snow White and the Huntsman. However! Were you aware that Lily almost slipped into Kristen’s mud-caked chain mail instead? “I did read the other Snow White script,” Collins revealed to Access Hollywood. “I auditioned for it, but I’ve been so excited for Kristen.” Whaaa whaaa what? Between this and that dwarf punching Armie Hammer in the face in the Mirror, Mirror trailer, we feel like we’re in a fairy tale Twilight Zone! Even without the dwarf!
Seeing as how Collins has experience diving in slow-motion to escape an explosion from her role in Abduction, we can actually picture her as a convincing soldier Snow White. However, we cannot imagine the logical opposite: Kristen Stewart sm…smi…smiling as the dancing, apple-cheeked star of Lily’s light-hearted film. “I think that story is so different than ours and the girls are so different,” Collins added. “She’s perfect for her version, and I’m really excited to be doing this one and I think they have totally different audiences.” Next you’ll be telling us that Nathan Lane, who plays a sniveling manservant in Mirror, Mirror, tried out for Charlize Theron‘s Evil Queen role. No, really, please tell us that. That’s all we want to hear in the world.
The Breaking Dawn premiere black carpet was crazy, and it got especially nuts when the big stars came through. Time gets tight with the actors talking to press and fans, so often they group reporters together for interviews. “Two questions!” we were told as Rob Pattinson saddled up in front of us. A lady to the right of me jumped in first. “Rob, the fans! This is crazy, right?” she asked, which almost caused me to have a tantrum. The poor dude’s answered that question 987654321 times since 2008, why not throw us all a bone and ask something interesting? Ever the gentleman, Rob gave a very gracious answer, and then I pounced, asking him about Wyck Godfrey‘s admission that they were working together. You can see Rob’s answer above. I then asked another question because I’m feisty like that. “Have you seen the Snow White and the Huntsmantrailer?” I shouted as he was whisked away. “Yeah,” he said with a serious, supportive smile. “It’s great. Amazing.”
The power of District 12 is strong already. Proof: After Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, had a significant early lead in our weekly Hotness poll, Hunger Games fans across the globe joined the rebellion and pushed li’l bro Liam Hemsworth to victory and beyond. Miley Cyrus‘ sweetie garnered 72 percent of the vote by the time polls closed today. (We’re guessing the Snow White and the Huntsman followers have been too distracted by that other little Kristen Stewart movie to click and refresh.)
So congrats to Liam. We’re looking forward to seeing a whole lot more of you — and not just Gale’s sadface alone in a meadow — very soon. And now that voting is over, we can all relax and be content with the fact that there is enough Hemsworth beauty to go around, and we never have to choose again. (But, Miley, you might want to hold on a little tighter.)
What’s better than a Hemsworth boy? Two, of course. But sorry, you can’t have both. We’re putting you between a rock-hard body and … another rock-hard body by making you choose. This week’s Hotness poll is a battle of the brothers. May the odds be ever in your favor.
Chris’ and Liam’s identical twinkling baby-blues and rugged Aussie look makes this decision a nail-biter. Chris’ 6’3 frame of muscle was a sight for sore eyes in his career-launching role as Thor. Yet, Liam had girls in a frenzy alongside is ex-girlfriend Miley Cyrus in The Last Song. And soon, the handsome Hemsworths will both take OMG to a new level with Liam in The Hunger Games and Chris in Snow White and the Huntsman.
Now it’s up to you to choose who’s hot versus who’s on fire. Here’s a smoking gallery for your viewing pleasure and to make that choice a little easier … just a little. Poll closes at 3 p.m. ET on Friday.
The Mirror, Mirrortrailer has arrived, which mean we can finally answer the question: which Snow White is the fairest of them all? “Fairest” means “most awesome,” right? While Kristen Stewart‘s Snow White seemed to be the Dark Night of Disney princess movies (based on the Snow White and the Huntsman trailer), Lily Collins‘ kind but headstrong heroine looks much more in keeping with the original fairy tale protagonist. Likewise, Julia Roberts‘ Evil Queen in this film is much more of a sarcastic diva compared to Charlize Theron‘s malevolent overlord. Are these two versions of Snow White too different to compare? Does it all come down to which film has more Nathan Lane in it? In the end, doesn’t everything? What do you think?
