Chest hair can be pretty divisive. Like modern art, cilantro, Marmite and Magic: The Gathering, you’re either REALLY into it…or really not. But looked at objectively, some of the manliest dudes of all time have quite the rug. James Bond! Chuck Norris! Don Draper! Alec Baldwin! Simon Cowell!!! And of course, there’s also Scott McCall of MTV’s Teen Wolf. At least when he goes into werewolf mode, that is.
After watching Spider-Man: The Animated Series in 1997, we decided Venom and Mary Jane Watson were actually a better couple than Mary Jane and Spider-Man, and we haven’t looked back since. In case you’re new to the Internet, pretty much every TV show, movie or otherwise fictional couple has a huge fan base swooning over their relationship. It might be a well-established couple or the characters might have met once to sign for a UPS package, it doesn’t matter. Someone is obsessed with them declaring their eternal love. This is a phenomenon known as shipping, and it is 75% of the reason anyone even knows about Twilight.
Maybe we just spent too much time on Tumblr over the last twelve months (we really, really did!), but 2012 seemed like a year where shipping was front and center. From New Girl to Sherlock, everywhere we looked shippers were building onto the fictional universes they loved, mostly with smooching. So we decided to pay homage to the most passionately shipped relationships of this year as part of our Best of 2012. Don’t see your favorite couple? We probably just didn’t know about them yet, so inform us in the comments! 2013 is almost upon us and we want to feel that Venom/Mary Jane feeling again!
Around this time last year, we made this list a roundup of our favorite vampires of 2011 — though we named Bella Cullen as our fave, it was Damon Salvatore who ruled your hearts. This year, we took a look around at our favorite movies, TV shows and books and discovered that, while the bloodsuckers of True Blood, Twilight and The Vampire Diaries were still among our faves, they had some competition from other supes, too. There were the characters wielding magic for good or evil — Snow White and the Huntsman’s Queen Ravenna, Beautiful Creatures‘ Lena, The Mortal Instruments‘ Magnus, TVD’s Bonnie. We had a nice crop of werewolves — Teen Wolf’s Scott and Derek, Nightshade’s Calla, True Blood’s Alcide. And then, of course, there were gods, genetic mutations, time travelers and Shadowhunters. Whether they were on the page, the screen or both, these beautiful, dangerous, ever-seductive heroes and villains made us feel a little bit inadequate for being mere humans. But there’s one power we have that they don’t: the ability to vote on which of these 25 characters was our favorite of the year. Take a look at the gallery and then vote!

I first saw this photo this morning on Arrow star Stephen Amell‘s Facebook feed (like it, you won’t be sorry), and no kidding, all work stopped for a full five minutes. I’m surprised there’s no brain matter splattered on my screen right now. In case you haven’t yet committed the fall TV schedule to memory, here’s who they are, from left to right: Amell, Jay Ryan (Beauty and the Beast), Steven R. McQueen (The Vampire Diaries), Dylan O’Brien (Teen Wolf), Harry Shum Jr. (Glee), Tyler Blackburn (Pretty Little Liars), Justin Hartley (Emily Owens, M.D.), Taylor Kinney (Chicago Fire) and Michael Trevino (The Vampire Diaries). The spread is actually from Bullett Media, who decided to explode our hearts too, by gathering these guys’ quotes about what they look for in a woman.
“I judge a woman purely on how she looks first thing in the morning. That’s the critical point, right?” Amell says. OK, so he’s not all that romantic. But points for honesty!
“If a girl doesn’t get along with my dog, then we’ve got a problem,” McQueen says.
Our personal favorite is from Tyler Blackburn: “I enjoy a certain amount of decadence in my life, so I want to be with someone who shares an appreciation for the finer things. And if that finer thing happens to be fried, well, put it in your mouth.” We’re totally down with that one.
For the rest of the guys’ quotes (especially a surprising revelation from Taylor Kinney, a.k.a. Lady Gaga’s main squeeze), head over to Bullett.

Teen Wolf’s Tyler Posey is downright charming both on-screen and off, as we learned while chatting him up on the Teen Choice Awards red carpet last night. We inquired about his most regrettable moment from the teen years – since, ya know – that’s kind of the theme of both the awards and his TV show on MTV. Turns out Tyler regrets nothing - though he did pause to look back on one moment with a bit of…thoughtful hindsight.
“I don’t really regret anything,” says Tyler. “I try not to. I don’t regret this, but I was 12 years old and I gave myself my first tattoo with a needle and ink. I would always scratch designs on my skin and rub ink on it when I was like 12.”
Tyler then went into great detail explaining how he sterilized a needle to really commit to inking himself, and accidentally marked himself with soot instead of ink. True story. “I think I’m okay, it’s been there for ten years. I’m still here,” he joked. We’re just glad he survived! And kids – definitely don’t try this at home.
