Many actors have tried to launch musical careers, and many have failed. Proving he really is more talented than the rest of us, Andrew Garfield debuted his first single on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon Thursday night. The fact that its lyrics contain references to spiders and crime-fighting civilians is purely coincidental, right? This isn’t just a plug for his new movie, The Amazing Spider-Man 2? Of course not! What kind of world do you think we’re living in?
The Amazing Spider-Man 2
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens tomorrow, reuniting moviegoers with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, super-powered arachnids and a version of New York City that heavily relies on the work of selfless vigilantes. The real life couple’s chemistry is off the charts, leading the film to get praise for its romance and comedy moreso than simply a shiny new take on the classic comic. With so much history in the roles, and previous film adaptations that dominated the box office, each actor has big shoes to fill. Yes, I’m specifically talking about the cheery, p-ssy posse-approved kicks of Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire!
Did anyone else think it was kind of cool and ironic that The Amazing Spider-Man was directed by someone called Marc Webb? Webb? Seriously? We’d hire him just for that name. But we digress from the main point of this story. We’ve been wholly attached to the pairing of Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone as Peter Parker-but-I’m-really-Spidey and Gwen Stacy. To be honest, we’re quite happy with the fact that Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man series (it was a trilogy) with Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco was canned. It didn’t resonate it with us as much as Garfield and Stone’s new take did. C’mon, we even grew to love Emma as a blond, and we know she was just born to be a red-head! Now, we’re at the point where The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is being cast, and while we know that both Garfield and Stone are are reprising their roles as Spidey and Gwen, respectively, the rest of the cast needs to be locked down. Variety reports that one big role is close to being filled — Mary Jane Watson’s. Sony is in early talks with Shailene Woodley for the role and apparently, she’s their top choice at the moment. Production will start early next year, so things may change until then, but for now we’re going to follow the trail and see if Woodley’s discussions with the studio translate into something concrete. But more importantly, do you think this is a good casting decision? Would Shailene make a good Mary Jane? Besides, matching up to Garfield and Stone’s chemistry is going to be very tough, so we’re wondering if she’ll be able to take on the task.
