Happy Birthday, Christian Bale! Here Are 10 Reasons Why He’s A Real Life Super Hero

Christian Bale turns 39 years old

Today is Christian Bale’s 39th birthday, so we knew we had better make him a really awesome post or else face his wrath. Just kidding! The actor supremo has been up to so much good in these past few years, we pretty much forgot all about that whole on-set rant thing. First, there are the sweet blockbusting films he’s given us recently, from his Academy-Award winning performance in The Fighter, to his most recent butt-kicking turn as the black-caped one in The Dark Knight Rises. But that’s not even the half of it: Christian has been making the rounds on his off-camera hours, helping out sick children, injured adults, and other less fortunate folks. And that’s just the start! To celebrate the big-hearted Oscar winner’s birthday, we’ve picked 10 ways that he actually is a real life super hero, right up there with Batman. Head down to the gallery below and check ‘em out!

What Happens At The End Of Game Of Thrones And HIMYM? Ask The Spoiling Tree

This one falls under the category of things we write about just because we love them. It’s kind of the answer to all those annoying people who complain about you spoiling the the ending to something that left the theaters or the airwaves months or even years ago. Guess what, folks? Soilent Green is made out of people! But we also get that spoilers are a forbidden fruit that’s hard to resist — if someone said they know how the Song of Ice and Fire (a.k.a. Game of Thrones) ends, I might have a hard time not finding out. Also, there are the shows and movies I will probably never get around to seeing but am still happy to know the ending of, for the sole purpose of pop-culture conversations and trivia night. So, yeah, I guess you’d say probably wouldn’t walk away from the Spoiling Tree and his sweet, sweet spoilers.

Tom Hardy’s Star Trek Screen Test Confirms He Is Your #1 Villain Crush

Sorry, Tom Hiddleston! If you weren’t convinced after seeing him freestyle while holding his baby Louis last week, Tom Hardy‘s snide, snarling Star Trek screen test will win you over to the dark side. We know we aren’t the only ones who are secretly obsessed with Hardy’s Bane after seeing The Dark Knight Rises. Something about that freakish, hulking strength paired with that cheeky eloquence…it gets us every time. Plus Tom is, you know, incredibly good looking. In case you had failed to notice that part before. Seeing Hardy square off against Patrick Stewart in 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis on top of all that equals a game over. We love how you can see hints of Tom’s Dark Knight Rises archness when he says the line, “We would have to take it!” Oh, and did we mention he plays Stewart’s evil clone. Game over. We’re done.

While Tom has firmly entrenched himself in the shadowy recesses of our hearts as a villain, he’ll soon be switching it up and playing a hero in next years Max Max: Fury Road. Luckily the film takes place in a gritty, futuristic Australia dystopia, so there’s probably no threat of Hardy suddenly turning into a Tom Hanks-style leading man just yet. Honestly though, put Tom Hanks in a grotesque face mask, give him a spinal scar and make him fight Christian Bale…yeah, we’re on board. We are so on board.

A Tiny Bit Of Good News: Dark Knight Shooter Charged, Film’s Composer Pens Song For Victims

Dark Knight Shooting Suspect James Holmes Charged

While there’s no possible way to put a positive spin on the Dark Knight Rises shooting, which happened in Aurora, Colorado on June 20, hopefully recent developments will give some solace to victims and their families. Oh, and that visit from Batman himself probably didn’t hurt either. Less than two weeks after allegedly killing 12 people and wounding dozens more at the Century Aurora 16, suspect James Holmes has been charged with 142 counts, including 24 counts of murder, 116 counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of explosives stemming from the booby trap the former neuroscience grad student set for authorities at his apartment. Experts postulate that the trial will largely revolve around Holmes’ sanity at the time of the shooting. Based on all the details surrounding the case, that will not be surprising in the least.

Meanwhile, Dark Knight Rises composer Hans Zimmer has written a charity song to benefit the Aurora Victim Relief Organization. He posted the haunting, lovely tune to his Facebook page on Friday, explaining, “‘Aurora’ is dedicated to those who lost their lives and were affected by the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado. I recorded this song in London in the days following the tragedy as a heartfelt tribute to the victims and their families.” You can get the song by donating at least 10 cents, or you can make the organization’s day by giving more than the handful of pennies you found jammed between your couch cushions. We think you know which one we’ll be picking. (Hint: it’s not the pennies.)

Dane Cook Apologized For Dark Knight Shooting Joke, Should Have Learned From His Fellow Comics

Dane Cook Jokes About Dark Knight Rises Shooting

Read the room, dude! One week after the Dark Knight Rises shooting killed 12 movie goers in Aurora, Colorado, Dane Cook took the stage at L.A.’s Laugh Factory and joked, “I know that if none of that would have happened, pretty sure that somebody in that theater, about 25 minutes in, realizing it was a piece of crap, was probably like ‘ugh f—ing shoot me.’” Regardless of whether his bit even made sense (everyone liked The Dark Knight Rises, didn’t they?), Cook eventually realized his mistake, tweeting today: “I made a bad judgment call with my material last night & regret making a joke at such a sensitive time. My heart goes out to all of the families & friends of the victims.” We can’t say we’re surprised, either that Dane Cook would make a shooting joke or that he apologized for it. You think he would have learned from his fellow comedians who had to deal with a “too much/too soon” backlash to their material:

Tom Hardy Raps With His Son, Now Please Give Him All Of The Roles And Awards Already

Ever since I saw him in This Means War back in February, I have been trying to will Hollywood to give Tom Hardy a lot more romantic roles, and really, everything else they want to throw his way. Actually, since Inception, I’m pretty sure a lot of casting directors wanted to hire him anyway, but his character was too creepy for me to really jump on the bandwagon. And it’s not like his Dark Knight Rises costume is winning him any rom-coms (though he did beat Christian Bale in last week’s Hotness poll, which was handily won by Joseph Gordon-Levitt). But today, for some reason, the above video is making the rounds, and it proves without a doubt what a vastly talented person this man is. It was posted back in 2011, but judging by the fact that we’re pretty sure that’s his son Louis (now 4), this was probably shot back in 2008. Whatever, the man has skillz. What kind of role will this revelation land him? The fictional story of the long-lost fourth Beastie Boy? Never mind. Just give him ALL of the roles already.

Christian Bale Visits Dark Knight Rises Shooting Victims, Makes Their Week Slightly Less Awful

Christian Bale Vivist Shooting Victim Carey Rottman

Christian Bale, you are one class act! After TMZ reported that the actor was visiting the hospitalized victims of last week’s Dark Knight Rises shooting in Aurora, Colorado, survivor Carey Rottman posted a Facebook photo of Batman just..hanging out and being awesome. Just being Batman while rocking a goatee. “Wow!!! Thank you so much for the visit Christian!! What a great guy! Still in shock!,” Rottman, who is allegedly recovering from a leg wound, posted along with the photo. Hopefully Bale’s visit will offer some distraction for everyone recovering from their injuries, though we swear, if he accidentally blurts out any spoilers…

According to Denver’s KDVR, the actor was apparently secreted into the Medical Center of Aurora South around 2:00pm to visit the shooting victims; the actor arrived via ambulance, ostensibly to avoid attracting a throng of shrieking fans. Not great for the healing process, we would imagine. As far as we’re concerned, the only way the other cast members could top this is if Anne Hathaway back-flipped through the waiting room in her Catwoman outfit, or Tom Hardy busted out some karoake in his cheeky, weirdo Bane voice. And even if they did…well, there’s no arguing: Bale is still the best.

Warner Bros. Pulls Ads, Victim’s Brother Blogs As Details Of The Dark Knight Rises Shooting Emerge

In the hours since 12 people were killed and at least 59 wounded by a gunman at a Dark Knight Rises screening in Aurora, Colorado, dozens of pieces of information have made their way onto the Internet, the most disturbing of those related to the alleged shooter himself. Identified as 24-year-old University of Colorado-Denver neuroscience graduate student James Holmes, the suspect allegedly told police he was the Joker, Batman’s nemesis in The Dark Knight, while he was being taken into custody following the attack. While information about the tragedy is still trickling in, other specifics about the shooting are just as harrowing:

  • In addition to the arsenal of four guns he used during the shooting, Holmes allegedly outfitted his apartment with a homemade booby trap or incendiary advice that police are still in the process of identifying. “It’s nothing I’ve ever seen before,” Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates told MSNBC.
  • Warner Bros has apparently pulled all TV and radio commercials for The Dark Knight Rises set to run this weekend.
  • Jordan Ghawi, brother of shooting victim Jessica Ghawi, has written a blog post describing the details of the shooting as reported by an alleged witness named Brent, including those surrounding the death of his sister. “Jessica and Brent were seated in the middle portion of the theatre when a device was thrown into the theatre that produced a ‘hissing’ sound,” Jordan writes in part. “The theatre then began to fill with smoke which is when patrons began to move from their seats. At that time, shots were fired.”

Dark Knight Hotness: Can You Choose Between Christian Bale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt And Tom Hardy?

Christian Bale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy

Not that we want to earn the wrath of those rabid Batman fans attacking critics of The Dark Knight Rises, but we have one small beef with Christopher Nolan‘s latest: Christian Bale and Tom Hardy hide those gorgeous mugs way too much! At least Joseph Gordon-Levitt gets to spend his parts of the movie mask-free. Yes, we are total girls and entirely missing the point here. But did you really come to VH1 Celebrity for in-depth analysis of Bane’s motivation? No. You are here to help us make a very important decision: to choose which of these Dark Knight stars is the hottest.

Besides being Nolan faves, these three stars share a few other things in common: They’re not afraid to mar their looks for the sake of a role. Bale bulks up and skinnies down at will, plus there was that terrible facial hair he sported in 2011. Hardy morphed his body and shaved his head for Bane, making us forget how delectable he can be at his fighting weight (see: the underrated This Means War). Gordon-Levitt makes sacrifices of the goofy kind, hiding his hotness behind goofy faces. But if you take a gander at this gallery, we’re sure you’ll agree that these gentleman are, in real life and on screen, a feast for the eyes. Now tell us which dish you prefer.
