The Vampire Diaries
Attention fans of prom committee and the supernatural: The Vampire Diaries star Candice Accola is in the building. Yes, VH1 is very lucky to have the lovely lady stop by Big Morning Buzz Live, and while it was hard to resist peppering her with questions about Tyler and Klaus, we’ve stuck to the task at hand. Or at least attempted to.
The more we hear about it, the more we are alternately rejoicing and fearing the possible upcoming Vampire Diaries spinoff. Rejoice: Today Deadline reports that Daniel Gillies will bring his admirably moral vampire Elijah to the show, joining TV bro Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and hot werewolf Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin). Also rejoice: Julie Plec will be the executive producer of this show, which would be called The Originals, should the network pick it up from the backdoor pilot, airing April 25. And hoorah #3: It would take place in New Orleans, a place ripe with so many possibilities for supernatural fun.
According to Plec, the story revolves around Klaus, who hears that some people are plotting against him in New Orleans, so he heads there to set things straight. “And in unfolding that mystery, it takes him back to a town that several hundred years ago, he was actually one of the original settlers of and helped build,” she explained to Entertainment Weekly. “He reacquaints himself with a vampire that he actually turned back in the day, Marcel, who has created a whole set of rules and a whole society for the supernatural community that he’s in charge of — sort of tipping his hat to Klaus and saying, ‘You taught me everything I know.’ So Klaus’ protegé is now the big king of the supernatural community in New Orleans and Klaus is stepping back into that. ”
Back in September, Nina Dobrev told us that she plans on playing a teenager for as long as she can, and we think the Vampire Diaries star, who turns 24 today, can do that for at least a couple more years. On the other hand, now that we’ve seen her play not one but two undead vixens on TVD, she’s going to have a hard time convincing anyone she’s an innocent young thing. Especially not after all those smoldering onscreen looks between her and real-life boyfriend Ian Somerhalder. Not that this should be a loss — after all, she must be having so much more fun now than as a weak human cheerleader. And not that we’re jealous of her or anything.
Let’s all wish Nina a happy birthday as we browse through her 24 most seductive looks.
After watching Spider-Man: The Animated Series in 1997, we decided Venom and Mary Jane Watson were actually a better couple than Mary Jane and Spider-Man, and we haven’t looked back since. In case you’re new to the Internet, pretty much every TV show, movie or otherwise fictional couple has a huge fan base swooning over their relationship. It might be a well-established couple or the characters might have met once to sign for a UPS package, it doesn’t matter. Someone is obsessed with them declaring their eternal love. This is a phenomenon known as shipping, and it is 75% of the reason anyone even knows about Twilight.
Maybe we just spent too much time on Tumblr over the last twelve months (we really, really did!), but 2012 seemed like a year where shipping was front and center. From New Girl to Sherlock, everywhere we looked shippers were building onto the fictional universes they loved, mostly with smooching. So we decided to pay homage to the most passionately shipped relationships of this year as part of our Best of 2012. Don’t see your favorite couple? We probably just didn’t know about them yet, so inform us in the comments! 2013 is almost upon us and we want to feel that Venom/Mary Jane feeling again!
Have you ever heard of the Baader-Meinhof effect? Basically it’s a cognitive illusion in which, once you become aware of something, you notice it everywhere. For us, 2012 meant a year of noticing wigs in every single aspect of our lives. From TV shows like Vampire Diaries to movies like Liz & Dick to meat space like celebrities’ heads, we couldn’t blink without seeing yet another wig. Nor did we want to.
For example, did anyone else see The Hobbit? Critics turned up their nose at the film’s length, but no one breathed a word about all the magnificent dwarf wigs. (It’s better this way. It was a delightful surprise.) While we try to figure out how to obtain a braided-beard-attached-to-a-toupee wig like ol’ Bombur, check out the best of the best of 2012′s wigs. Lindsay Lohan…you did us proud. Did we miss any winners? Please tell us. We genuinely want to know!

We’ve made no secret of the fact that Vampire Diaries witch and pop star Kat Graham is one of our favorite triple threats on the scene. And though she was only at the VH1 DIVAS concert to present Metric, she pulled at least one diva move — changing her outfit between the purple carpet and the stage. She showed off her first gown, by Alpana Neeraj, to VH1′s guest correspondent Jackie Christie — and the two shared a cute moment over their side-swept hairstyles in the video above.
But we haven’t yet heard who designed the second one, which was sheer on the bottom instead of the top, showing off her gams the way the good witch Bonnie never gets to do.
To be sure, there was never any time on The Vampire Diaries when Klaus (Joseph Morgan) wasn’t the bad guy. It’s just that he’s usually very good at making us forgive him for murdering his way toward world domination. And every time it looked like the rest of the Mystic Falls gang was finally going to kill him, we really, really hoped they wouldn’t succeed. Until last night. Let us track our feelings toward Klaus throughout “Oh Come, All Ye Faithful,” the mid-season finale.
1. We love artist Klaus, even if he’s really fooling himself if he thinks that snowflake painting is some kind of abstract post-modern statement. Also, he’s doing it for charity, right?
2. He flirts with Caroline with charming name-dropping: “Dickens was a dark man.”
We could write this post all about how much we’d like to go for a swim in Ian Somerhalder’s beautiful eyes, or how much Damon makes us squeal and laugh and cry every week on The Vampire Diaries. But the funny thing about Mr. Smolderholder is that’s probably not how he wants us to celebrate his 34th birthday today. Instead, he’d really, really like us all to donate to the Ian Somerhalder Foundation — which supports initiatives for the environment and animals — via the Mozilla Firefox Challenge on Crowdrise.com, so that he can get the company to ante up $50,000.
It looks like fans are doing their part so far, but if you need a little motivation, here’s a gallery showing Ian being a beautiful person, inside and, yeah, outside too:

Around this time last year, we made this list a roundup of our favorite vampires of 2011 — though we named Bella Cullen as our fave, it was Damon Salvatore who ruled your hearts. This year, we took a look around at our favorite movies, TV shows and books and discovered that, while the bloodsuckers of True Blood, Twilight and The Vampire Diaries were still among our faves, they had some competition from other supes, too. There were the characters wielding magic for good or evil — Snow White and the Huntsman’s Queen Ravenna, Beautiful Creatures‘ Lena, The Mortal Instruments‘ Magnus, TVD’s Bonnie. We had a nice crop of werewolves — Teen Wolf’s Scott and Derek, Nightshade’s Calla, True Blood’s Alcide. And then, of course, there were gods, genetic mutations, time travelers and Shadowhunters. Whether they were on the page, the screen or both, these beautiful, dangerous, ever-seductive heroes and villains made us feel a little bit inadequate for being mere humans. But there’s one power we have that they don’t: the ability to vote on which of these 25 characters was our favorite of the year. Take a look at the gallery and then vote!
