Since March 8, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 has been missing. The search area has only grown larger as the aircraft’s disappearance has developed into an international crisis, with 12 crew and 227 passengers unaccounted for. We can only hope that answers come to light soon, and we wish for the best possible outcome. This incident is a reminder of just how expansive the Earth is, as it’s been nearly two weeks since anyone last knew where the plane was. That’s a significant chunk of time. To put it into perspective, here are 8 Ways The World Has Changed Since Flight 370 Went Missing. From pop culture tidbits to political developments, a lot has happened. As more time passes, the outlook seems increasingly grim, but we’re still holding out for a safe return of MH 370.
If you’re close enough to a computer to read this, you’ve obviously heard about the tragedy befallen the town of Newtown, Connecticut. Latest reports say that 18 of the 27 people shot in a school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary are children. Police have announced Adam Lanza as the suspected gunman; his mother was found dead inside the school. If only to distract yourself from the grim procession of new details (and the tears intermittently falling out of your eyes), we gathered celeb tweets for the survivors from everyone from Rihanna to Rashida Jones to Michael Moore. For more serious advice on how to cope with the tragedy, head over to MTV Act.
Christian Bale, you are one class act! After TMZ reported that the actor was visiting the hospitalized victims of last week’s Dark Knight Rises shooting in Aurora, Colorado, survivor Carey Rottman posted a Facebook photo of Batman just..hanging out and being awesome. Just being Batman while rocking a goatee. “Wow!!! Thank you so much for the visit Christian!! What a great guy! Still in shock!,” Rottman, who is allegedly recovering from a leg wound, posted along with the photo. Hopefully Bale’s visit will offer some distraction for everyone recovering from their injuries, though we swear, if he accidentally blurts out any spoilers…
According to Denver’s KDVR, the actor was apparently secreted into the Medical Center of Aurora South around 2:00pm to visit the shooting victims; the actor arrived via ambulance, ostensibly to avoid attracting a throng of shrieking fans. Not great for the healing process, we would imagine. As far as we’re concerned, the only way the other cast members could top this is if Anne Hathaway back-flipped through the waiting room in her Catwoman outfit, or Tom Hardy busted out some karoake in his cheeky, weirdo Bane voice. And even if they did…well, there’s no arguing: Bale is still the best.
In the hours since 12 people were killed and at least 59 wounded by a gunman at a Dark Knight Rises screening in Aurora, Colorado, dozens of pieces of information have made their way onto the Internet, the most disturbing of those related to the alleged shooter himself. Identified as 24-year-old University of Colorado-Denver neuroscience graduate student James Holmes, the suspect allegedly told police he was the Joker, Batman’s nemesis in The Dark Knight, while he was being taken into custody following the attack. While information about the tragedy is still trickling in, other specifics about the shooting are just as harrowing:
- In addition to the arsenal of four guns he used during the shooting, Holmes allegedly outfitted his apartment with a homemade booby trap or incendiary advice that police are still in the process of identifying. “It’s nothing I’ve ever seen before,” Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates told MSNBC.
- Warner Bros has apparently pulled all TV and radio commercials for The Dark Knight Rises set to run this weekend.
- Jordan Ghawi, brother of shooting victim Jessica Ghawi, has written a blog post describing the details of the shooting as reported by an alleged witness named Brent, including those surrounding the death of his sister. “Jessica and Brent were seated in the middle portion of the theatre when a device was thrown into the theatre that produced a ‘hissing’ sound,” Jordan writes in part. “The theatre then began to fill with smoke which is when patrons began to move from their seats. At that time, shots were fired.”

Given the amount of joy Soulja Boy has given us in the form of a dance we spent months annoying our friends with, it’s painful to find out that he and his family have suffered a tragedy. Reportedly, Soulja Boy’s brother Deion Jenkins died in a car accident Sunday night. Soulja Boy tweeted about his brother yesterday, writing “at home crying my eyes out I can’t believe my Lil bro is gone… today is so not my day.. RIP lil brother love you always :(” Producer CEO Miami Mike tweeted his condolences to the rapper as well, saying “The Flags are @ Half Staff @ the Offices of SODMG & PTE, R.I.P. to @Souljaboy little brother who passed-way in a auto crash last nite :-(”
According to MediaTakeOut, 14-year-old Deion was riding in a car in Charlestown, Mississipi when the accident occured. We hope Soulja Boy and his family are doing as well as they possibly can given the circumstances. At least they have the consolation of knowing how cool it must have been for him to have Soulja Boy as an older brother.

Ugh, it’s only Monday and already we are trying not to cry in our cubicle, although suprisingly it’s over an incredibly sad celeb story and not just Taylor Swift’s new bangs. While most of us think of Jay-Z primarily as the talented millionaire who gets to sleep next to our queen Beyonce, the road from his childhood in Brooklyn to international rap superstardom was nowhere near as dreamy.
In an interview with The Guardian, the rapper recently opened up about how at 12, Jay-Z shot his brother Eric after his sibling stole a ring from a tween-age Hova in order to feed his drug addiction. Still know as Shawn Carter, Jay-Z reveals that after the incident, “I thought my life was over. I thought I’d go to jail forever. It was terrible. I was a boy, a child. I was terrified.” If the thought of a little baby Hova dealing with something so horrible doesn’t make your eyes get at least a little misty, you literally aren’t a human being.
Luckily his brother recovered from the injury, never reporting the incident to police and even apologizing to Shawn in the hospital for the effects of his addition. While the interview marks the first time Jay-Z has opened up about the incident, he did write about it on his album “In My Lifetime, Vol. 1″ on the song “You Must Love Me”, in which he raps, “Saw the devil in your eyes, high off more than weed, confused, I just closed my young eyes and squeezed.” Despite the fact while that growing up, he himself was shot three times, Jay-Z believes,”It’s like there was some rogue angel watching over us.” Ugh, why doesn’t this damn cubicle have a door?!?! Now everyone is going to know why our paperwork is all wrinkly with tear stains.
Marie Osmond‘s 18-year-old son Michael Blosil tragically took his own life on Friday night in Los Angeles. The singer, currently living in Las Vegas, issued the following statement after her son’s death: “My family and I are devastated and in deep shock by the tragic loss of our dear Michael and ask that everyone respect out privacy during this difficult time.”
The teen reportedly has battled depression for several years and checked into rehab in 2007 for undisclosed reasons. He was enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in L.A. and on Friday evening he had reportedly texted a friend to come over, which was his last known attempt to contact anyone. The text explained that he left his friend a note, which is reported to be a suicide note, the contents of which have not been disclosed. Upon her arrival at his apartment, the friend and Blosil’s roommates found the note, but it wasn’t until they heard ambulance sirens that they were alerted to the fact that he had leapt from the 8th floor apartment. An autopsy performed on Blosil on Sunday has proved inconclusive. Toxicology results will be returned in 4 to 5 weeks. [Photo: Getty Images]
Actress Natasha Richardson is currently in critical condition at a New York City hospital following a freak ski accident in Quebec, Canada. Family members, including her husband Liam Neeson, mother Vanessa Redgrave, and sister Joely Richardson, all were spotted visiting the star, who is reportedly “brain dead.”
While no official statement has been given, reports from close friends reveal that Richardson is barely holding on. “There is no chance,” an insider close to the family said. “It is a fact that her heart is beating but she is brain dead.”
Other reports reveal that she would not have been able to be flown from Montreal to New York if her brain was swollen, and those monitoring her medical situation reveal that she was “unconscious” and “nonreactive” in the ambulance. Husband Liam Neeson reportedly sat with her and caressed her face the entire time. Our thoughts are with her friends and family today. [People/TMZ/E! Online. Photo: GettyImages]

DJ AM, who survived a harrowing plane crash last summer along with drummer Travis Barker, is suing Learjet (and others, apparently) for at least $20 million. The former boyfriend of Nicole Richie is demanding $10 million for “medical damages, lost earnings and profits,” and another $10 million for mental and physical pain and suffering. Seeing as his body was super burned and he lost friends in the crash, we think this seems like a reasonable request.
The defendants in the case have denied any wrongdoing, but AM’s not buying it, and neither is Barker. He and the families of his assistant and bodyguard (who both died in the crash), have filed wrongful death suits against the corporations involved, and are also suing the estates of the two deceased pilots. Oakland Raiders linebacker Marquis Cooper, NFL free agent Corey Smith and former University of South Florida football player William Bleakley are all still missing after departing for a fishing trip in Florida on Saturday. Their friend and fishing companion, former USF football player Nick Schuyler, was found yesterday clinging to their capsized boat (see pic above).
Schuyler told investigators that their anchored boat was overturned Saturday evening, and that the friends clung to it until somehow separating early Monday morning. All off the missing men were reportedly wearing life vests, which may enhance their slim chances of survival as time runs out.
Still, the coast guard is calling off their search, even as family members refuse to give up hope. “He doesn’t back down,” Bruce Cooper said of his son Marquis. “He’s just an extreme fighter. What I’m holding on to is that he’s out in the water right now, just fighting.” [Photo: GettyImages]
