You have no idea how long we’ve been waiting for the new Star Trek movie. And now we’re one step closer because the teaser trailer is out and it is all sorts of boss. All the usual suspects are in there reprising their roles: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg and John Cho. New additions include Alice Eve and one totally baller Benedict Cumberbatch. Sherlock fans will know why we’re so stoked. And he’s the bad guy, which is even cooler. The trailer starts with his gravelly voice threatening, “You think your world is safe. It is an illusion. A comforting lie told to protect you. Enjoy these final moments of peace. For I have returned to have my vengeance.” And then everything explodes in the coolest way. Of course there’s the obligatory close-up shot of Pine’s face with his baby blues looking intent. Makes us melt every single time. There’s also one clip of Alice screaming in abject terror, so you know Cumberbatch is bringing it. The movies’s only releasing next year in May, which is a huge bummer, but if they keep serving slices of trailer goodness, we won’t complain. Not too much, at least.
In case you didn’t believe us yesterday when we told you that Warm Bodies should be one of your next obsessions, we present to you the trailer of the movie, starring Nicholas Hoult (a.k.a. Jennifer Lawrence’s partner in Cheeto-eating) as the most lovable walking dead you’ve ever met. He may do for zombies what Anne Rice and Stephenie Meyer did for vampires: turn their rotting flesh into the object of our desire. Well, OK, R is not THAT sexy right off the bat, but trust us, he grows on you. We were already looking forward to the movie after reading the book, by Isaac Marion, but now this trailer has us hyped about a few other things. Namely:
- The great juxtaposition of R’s internal dialogue and his moaning outer one.
- Rob Corddry as R’s womanizing undead buddy M.
- The fact that M’s humorous scenes are helping erase the trauma of last week’s Walking Dead.
- John Freaking Malkovich as Julie’s dad.
- Dave Franco as Julie’s dead dead ex-boyfriend Perry. Why isn’t Dave in all of the things yet?
- Analeigh Tipton — who cracked us up in Crazy, Stupid, Love. — as Julie’s wisecracking friend Nora.
Julie herself, played by Teresa Palmer, is still something of a blank slate in this trailer. But maybe that’s because we’re meant to fall in love with her right along with R?
We’re having fond memories of the Great Expectations version which released back in 1998 with Ethan Hawke and an absolutely breathtaking Gwyneth Paltrow. Remember that one? This latest one, due to release late November this year, feels like its going to blow its 1998 predecessor out of the water. Directed by Mike Newell of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, it stars Helena Bonham Carter as Ms. Havisham and Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch and honestly, after watching this trailer, we don’t really care about the actors playing Pip and Estella’s roles. Carter and Fiennes are just perfectly cast and we pity anyone sharing screen space with those two. Alright, alright, Pip’s played by Jeremy Irvine of War Horse fame. He does a decent job in the trailer but like we said, anyone pales in comparison against those other two English thespians. We’re most concerned with Holliday Grainger who portrays Estella. She didn’t stand out at all for us, but we’re going to give her the benefit of the doubt and wait till we actually watch the film. Perhaps the next trailer will change our minds? Holliday’s had roles in both Jane Eyre and Bel Ami, FYI. We cannot tell you how excited we are about this film, as the book never gets old for us. Newell paints a beautiful picture that seems to be muted and lush at the same time, staying true to a Dickensian atmosphere. Goosebumps, all over. Have a look for yourselves.
Twilight isn’t the only phenomenon to hit Comic-Con this year! While we were super stoked to see the Breaking Dawn cast at their panel discussion, this little tidbit of news has us beside ourselves with glee! Wizard of Oz fans, please stand up! Did you know that Disney is releasing their version of the classic tale next year, which is being directed by Sam Raimi. They released the first footage from the film yesterday, and the movie is called Oz The Great And Powerful. It’s actually a prequel to the regular Wizard of Oz, and stars James Franco as Oscar Diggs, a magician from Kansas who is carried away to Oz by, you guessed it, a tornado. Then we have the witches — Theodora, Evanora and Glinda — played by Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams respectively, with incredible wardrobes, FYI. They’re a bit disillusioned by Oz, and it’s up to Diggs to find his way through to the truth and realize what, or who, is good and bad. The trailer itself is just magical and gave us chills, segueing from the darkly whimsical, black-and-white world of Kansas to the technicolor world of Oz. “Am I dreaming,” Franco wonders, as he walks through the fantastical realm. “Are you the great man we’ve been waiting for,” floats into the voice-over. Watch the trailer, and ask those questions too.
We never ever thought that anyone could replace what Matt Damon brought to the Bourne series. While watching the latest trailer for the fourth installment, The Bourne Legacy, we realized just how wrong we were. The film is in the very capable, very muscular hands of Jeremy Renner and he blew our minds in this clip! We haven’t really been keeping up with the news on the film, which is our bad, because we can’t wait to watch it now. The fact that Edward Norton is the baddie is the icing on the cake. We also admit that we had to watch the trailer a couple of times to try and get a handle of the plot. There’s a lot going on here.
Renner plays Agent Aaron Cross but also calls himself Kenneth Gidson at the beginning of the trailer. It seems there are a bunch of these super agents flying around all over the place because, “Jason Bourne was the tip of the iceberg.” Damon’s history is woven in by appearing in a news item in the trailer, linked to the Treadstone project. A character in the film then says, “Do you think that Jason Bourne was the whole story? There’s a lot more going on here.” Renner’s part of something called “Operation Outcome” where these agents are created, or modified. Enter, Rachel Weisz who plays Dr. Stephanie Snyder who was part of the team who created them. We’re also guessing she’s his love interest thanks to a brief steamy moment in the trailer. The incredible action scenes we see are both of them running from Norton to avoid assassination. Have a look, and tell us what else you gleaned from the clip.
Talk about an emotional roller coaster! Two trailers for Cosmopolis dropped last night, and they are intense. The clips coincided with the announcement that the film, directed by David Cronenberg, will premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival next month, which is often the launching pad for the most buzzed about and acclaimed films of the year. (The Artist won the top prize at last year’s festival and went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars.) And of course we’re also really pumped about seeing Robert Pattinson walk around in a tux for a week, hopefully alongside his lovely girlfriend Kristen Stewart, who will also be in attendance for her film, On the Road.
We went through a whole bevy of emotions and reactions while watching the two trailers, so we whipped ‘em up in a little list for you to peruse. What did you feel watching while watching them? We await your thoughts in the comments and on Twitter.
We KNOW it’s called a teaser trailer for a reason, OK. We get it. But these 15 seconds teasing the teaser trailer for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 have driven us in a bit of tizzy as we wait for the full teaser to run before The Hunger Games this Friday. We’re worried about what this is going to do for our sanity. Let’s see what we have in here. A vampiric figure bolting through the forest, who we know is Bella (Kristen Stewart, FTW!), but we can’t see her face. We go Taylor Lautner looking as hot as ever, saying, “I didn’t expect you to seem so … you.” We have a ring shot which we all love, right? And we got Edward (Robert Pattinson, yea-aah!) looking tenderly at Bella’s face — which they don’t show —and saying, “We’re the same temperature now.” Yes, it’s a teaser … but they’re taking the teasing a little too seriously. Because we need more!

Is it wrong that we keep referring to Battleship as “that Rihanna movie”? The latest trailer has these shots of her that make us feel like we’re watching one of her music videos. We also know that Alexander Skarsgard, Liam Neeson, Brooklyn Decker and Taylor Kitsch are in it, but sadly, we get to see only a couple of tiny frames of them. As opposed to Rih, who has the camera panning on her looking intense, and who gets to say “Boom” in a very dramatic scene. The last trailer for Battleship came out in 2011, followed up by the film’s poster with Rihanna … and basically, everything seems to be about the singer. But this current trailer also gives us a couple more hints about what the storyline is going to be like. We see that poor Hong Kong is the first city to get its ass kicked by the alien invaders. We also get that the movie is pretty much like Transformers, only at sea. Also, Friday Night Lights vet Jesse Plemmons looks very Landry-like in a couple of scenes. Do we still want to watch it? Hell, yeah!
The trailer for Walter Salle’s On The Road finally premiered today, and it’s a hauntingly beautiful glimpse into a film we’re dying to see. It’s been a while since we’ve read Kerouac’s iconic tale, but from what we can tell in ninety seconds, the film feels very close to the book. (Smart Kerouac fans, do you agree?) The movie stars and is narrarated by Sam Riley (Sal), who has a shockingly sexy voice. Garrett Hedlund co-stars as Dean, Sal’s co-hort in his cross country journey of discovery and debauchery, as does our girl Kristen Stewart, who plays Dean’s wife, MaryLou. We love her dancing scene in the trailer, don’t you? So electric!
We’re also excited to see Kirsten Dunst in the mix, who is coming off an amazing year filled with serious accolades for her work in Melancholia, as well as a new, handsome boyfriend who just so also happens to be her On The Road co-star (Hi Garrett!).
What do you think of the trailer, OTR fans?
A new trailer for The Avengers has surfaced, and though it’s an extended video of the clip that was aired on Super Bowl Sunday, we’ve watched this 59 times already and are on to our 60th. Here’s some of the awesomeness you should be looking out for: The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) rescuing Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) as he’s free-falling off a skyscraper; Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) fighting on a mountaintop; and also, what exactly are those aliens that Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is controlling? Hiddleston makes a terrific Loki, and you’ll see a lot more of his sinister mug in this trailer. This is really shaping up to the be the movie to watch this summer. May 4 is the date. Mark your calendars.
