The Avengers Stars Robert Downey Jr., Tom Hiddleston Have Their Own Heroes

The Avengers is raking it in at the box office this weekend — it already has the highest midnight opening of a comic-book movie — and even though it’s probably not going to break that many records, we’re pretty sure Robert Downey Jr. and company are at the top of Marvel’s list of real-life heroes. At the red-carpet premiere of the movie last week, we decided to let the stars get a little sappy and share who their heroes are. Get ready to “awwww.”

“My mum and my dad,” Tom Hiddleston, who plays villain Loki, told VH1 News without hesitation. “Just because they’ve taught me everything I know really about life. They haven’t consciously taught it to me, they, they’ve just, uh, lead by example. They’re intensely good people, with a great deal of kindness and humility. It’s only now that I’m older that I can appreciate it.”

Clark Gregg also praised his Stanford professor father, “who’s dedicated his life to exploring different religions in a way that breaks down the imagined barriers,” along with President Obama. “I’m gonna come out and say that I’m a big fan of Barack Obama,” he said. “I don’t think he had a perfect first term but I believe, I like the things he believes in.”

Cobie Smulders Talks About Those Wild Nights With The Avengers Cast

The cast of The Avengers reads like our dream dinner party guest list. From Robert Downey Jr. and Jeremy Renner to Scarlett Johansson and Chris Hemsworth,  the whole crew seems like the coolest (and sexiest!) gang that a person could ask for. And according to costar Cobie Smulders, they’re super fun, too! The lovely Ms. Smulders caught up with VH1 News at The Avengers premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, and she insisted that the cast got along together great both onscreen and off.

“It was really cool. It could have been a disastrous movie,” she admitted. “It was huge actors, huge characters, and I think it all comes back to Joss Whedon who wrote such an amazing script and it gave everybody their moment, you know.” But although they worked hard, Cobie says that they definitely made time to party hard as well. “I mean, we were in Albuquerque for awhile. There were a few nights, wild nights. Which I can’t really remember. But um, but it was a lot of fun. Everyone was super cool.” Damn, it makes us wish we’d been cast!

What Makes Avengers Villain Tom Hiddleston Geek Out?

While comic book fans the world over are totally freaking out over The Avengers this weekend (or last weekend, if they’re those lucky folks overseas), we kind of wonder what the stars of the movie geek out about themselves. VH1 News asked Tom Hiddleston at the New York premiere of the movie, and the answer makes him seem the very opposite of his super evil character Loki. In fact, we won’t be surprised if it clenches him the victory in our Summer Movie Villains poll.

“I’m quite a geeky runner; I love running,” he admitted. “I’m also a geek about tennis. I love watching tennis, I get obsessed by it, I don’t know why. I think I find it so dramatic, like, because after, at a certain level, it doesn’t matter how good you are and how much training you’ve done, it’s like up here [in your head] and in [your heart]. So when you see people like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal and [Novak] Djokovic go at it, it’s just like a battle of wits and heart. I’m getting geeky about it right now!”

Judd Apatow, Mad Men’s Rich Sommer, More Share Their Grossest New York Moments At Tribeca

There are many ways to tell whether you are truly a New Yorker or just one of the millions just stopping through — and I’ve always contended that you really know you’ve arrived when you witness someone taking a crap in the middle of the street. We are not alone in this. And that’s why VH1 News asked the glamorous stars, from NYC and Hollywood alike, attending the Tribeca Film Festival for the past two weeks to share their grossest New York moment. Just so we know where they stand.

“I one day saw the entire journey of a turd,” Mad Men star Rich Sommer said. “I was walking through Union Square and saw a man creating it, and then I walked by later in the day and it was still there, and then I walked by like four hours later and it was gone.”

Malin Akerman defines gross a little differently. “For those New Yorkers that have never been to the Box…” she began, talking about the risque burlesque club. “If you want to call it ‘burlesque’ — I have seen some of the grossest things ever at the Box.”

Judd Apatow has scary, rather than disgusting memories of his childhood in the city. “I kind of remember almost getting robbed when I was a kid on 8th Avenue, but now 8th Avenue is like the Disney store,” he said.

Emily Blunt, Alison Brie Agree: A Five-Year Engagement Is A Very Bad Idea

Despite what you may think upon seeing the trailer, or just hearing the name The Five-Year Engagement, the movie is not about a pair of commitment-phobes. Violet (Emily Blunt) and Tom (Jason Segel) really do seem to want to get married, they just let a lot of other things get in their way. But Blunt and co-star Alison Brie know they would handle things much differently.

“You gotta crack the whip and get on with it, because you run into all kinds of trouble, like [our characters] do,” Blunt told VH1 News at the red-carpet premiere last week. “If you want to do it, you gotta just do it.”

Brie agreed. “I mean, look, I’m honestly not a super weddings-y type of person, but I do think that if you’re going to take the step and propose and get engaged, that’s the big leap there,” the Community star said. “Then just get married! Follow it up!”

The relationship woes of fictional people were not really much on the actresses’ minds at the premiere, by the way. They were too intent on clowning around: Emily barged in on co-star Kevin Hart’s interview, and Alison turned our request for her to reprise her character’s British accent into a weird New York mobster thing. We don’t mind, though. That kind of playful energy is kind of the best way to sell a comedy, isn’t it?

Jason Segel Would Prefer A Three-Day Engagement, Actually

First off, I have seen The Five-Year Engagement, and I can tell you that it absolutely cements my opinion that Jason Segel is the best romantic lead of our time. He is just so believable and endearing and frustrating and lovable. Anyway, /gush off. At the New York premiere of the film last night, VH1 News’ Janell Snowden played coy about the fact that he is fully, openly dating Michelle Williams now, and instead got him to speak hypothetically about whether he would ever consider a super long engagement like the one in the movie.

“My plan is to get her to marry me as quickly as possible, so that she doesn’t find out who I really am,” he said. “I’ll do it romantic, but I’ll do it over a three-day weekend. We’ll meet on a Friday, have our first date on Saturday, get engaged by Sunday and get married on Monday.”

While that does sound romantic in its own way, I am rather enjoying what we’ve seen of his slightly more extended courtship of Williams. She was at the premiere (though she didn’t walk the carpet), and the Daily News reported that they were holding hands during the afterparty at the Museum of Modern Art, where Segel gave an impromptu dance performance to “Don’t Stop Believing.” Yep, that would definitely sweep me off my feet.

DWTS Judge Carrie Ann Inaba Still Doesn’t Talk To Fellow Fly Girl Jennifer Lopez

We always forget that Dancing With the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba got her start the same way Jim Carrey, the Wayans brothers, Jamie Foxx, Rosie Perez, Laurieann Gibson and Jennifer Lopez did, on In Living Color. But Inaba (who also danced on tour with Madonna, was a Japanese pop star and appeared in Austin Powers in Goldmember) reminded us when she appeared at the 2012 TV Land Awards (airing on TV Land April 29), where the Fox sketch show is receiving the Groundbreaking Award. VH1 News couldn’t resist asking if she ever reminisces about the good old days with JLo.

“Actually, we don’t really talk much,” Inaba said. “She’s on that other show called American Idol. And even though American Idol and Dancing With the Stars are right next to each other, we don’t really talk that much. Just kidding, there’s no bad blood.”

Diego Boneta Vows Tom Cruise’s Singing Will Blow Your Mind In Rock Of Ages

We all sawTom Cruise scramble down the side of a towering glass skyscraper in Ghost Protocol. It is any surprise he’d bring the same intensity to hair metal? Rock of Ages star Diego Boneta solemnly promises that Tom Cruise’s performance will knock our neon scrunch socks clear out of our Reebok high tops. “As a singer, Tom blew me away,” Boneta explained. “He was preparing eight hours a day for four months just taking vocal lessons. He was taking four hours of guitar every day. Then he’d get up on stage and just let go, just be a rock star. Like he didn’t put one hour of preparation into it!” And that’s not even considering the hours Tom spent in the gym to become a sinewy rock god. Have you seen that man’s torso in the movie’s promo photos? That, friends, is an eight-hour-a-day torso.

Considering Boneta, who plays Julianne Hough’s lovah in the ’80s-tastic musical movie, is himself a Mexican pop star, we take his word for it that Cruise’s vocal stylings are gasp-worthy. “It’s so overwhelming in a good way,” Diego laughed about the film. Oh, we believe you, Diego. Again, did you see that torso?

Vampire Diaries Star Kat Graham Is “All About The Ass”

Kat Graham and her date Perez Hilton did their darndest to blind us on the red carpet of the NewNowNext Awards last week: Perez with his brand-new abs and Kat with the blingiest corset we’ve ever seen. The two were actually in matching outfits from The Blonds. “It’s very Britney/Justin 2000,” the Vampire Diaries star said of their matching outfit. “That [denim] was iconic. He had the cowboy hat, we have diamonds and studs.”

Kat has certainly been enjoying showing off her curves as she promotes her new single, “Put Your Graffiti on Me.” “I’m all about the sexy part of you,” she told us. “It’s all about the ass in this dress. I think it’s going well so far.”
