Here’s the greatest thing we learned recently: Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson was in an a cappella group called Twelve Voice at her Christian high school. Amazing, right? The actress told us what it was like being part of Australia’s “dorkiest” singing troupe, in which she had to wear “peasant blouses and long velvet skirts.”
“There was no dancing, there was no cool choreography or cool songs when I sang a cappella,” she said. “We’d have to stand like this — we weren’t allowed to do any cool moves — and just sing church songs.”
She then blew our minds by singing us an example of the kind of tunes they got down to. A terrible song has never sounded so awesome.
“I thought a cappella was totally dorky, and then when I came to America and saw The Sing-Off, I though, ‘It’s pretty sweet,’” she said.
But if you really wand “pretty sweet,” you have to see Rebel as Fat Amy in Pitch Perfect, in which she handles singing her heart out and getting belted with burritos with grace.
Also, please check out Rebel’s amazing ring bling, which she told us was made for her by a guy in jail. Read more…
OK, this is probably a coincidence, but it’s one we can’t ignore: Less than two days after our own Kate Spencer asked stars on the Emmys red carpet to sing their favorite TV theme songs, Jimmy Fallon and the cast of Guys With Kids performed their own medley of classic TV tunes. So, it was ostensibly inspired by the fact that Fallon sings the theme song of Guys, which he also co-created, and this performance was clearly planned well in advance, judging by the choreography and cleverly arranged order of songs. But we can’t help but be delusional and pretend we inspired this brilliance.
Above, you have Fallon, Anthony Anderson, Zach Cregger and Jesse Bradford singing the themes from The Jeffersons, Happy Days, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Saved by the Bell, Cheers, All in the Family, The Greatest American Hero (our personal fave) and more. And below, Breaking Bad’s Dean Norris, The Amazing Race’s Phil Keoghan, Girls’Alex Karpovsky and others sing songs from shows like Gilligan’s Island and The Brady Bunch. It’s apples to oranges, but we encourage you to enjoy both masterpieces. Read more…
Followers of VH1 Celebrity know that we’re big YA junkies around here, and we’re reeeeally excited for Veronica Roth’s Divergent to hit the big screen. American Horror Story’s Evan Peters is a favorite of ours for any and every role these days, so we asked him if he’d heard about Divergent or Lauren Oliver’s Delirium (also hopefully headed to a movie theater near you). Says Evan about Divergent: “My agent sent me that. I gotta read that!”
Um yes, you do! While Evan didn’t win our Divergent Dream Cast poll, we’d still love to see him make the transition to film, and think he’s got the emotional range to nail a part like Four (or maybe Augustus Waters in The Fault in Our Stars). What do you think, YA fans?
We also chatted with Evan about TV in general — this being the night when such things are celebrated — and the star admitted to his newly acquired habit: reality TV. Welcome to the club, Evan!
You can always count on VH1 to ask celebrities the most important questions on the red carpet. We headed to the Emmys with one mission and one mission only: to get as many stars as possible to sing their favorite TV theme songs. After all there are SO many good ones! Just try to pick your favorite. Cheers, Friends, The Jeffersons, Punky Brewster, Facts of Life, Welcome Back Kotter, New Girl, the amazing instrumental jams of The Cosby Show and Beverly Hills, 90210 — can you choose just one? The stars we talked to at the Emmys gave it their best shot and some even sang their picks because really, that’s the only way to do it. Wanna see what it looks like when Hank (Dean Norris) from Breaking Bad sings The Brady Bunch theme song? How about The Amazing Race’s Phil Keoghan singing Gilligan’s Island? Yeah, we thought so. Click on, friends.
The adrenaline kicking End of Watch opens wide across the country today, staring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena as two L.A. cops who get on the bad side of a drug cartel. Costar Anna Kendrick admits to being serious knocked out by Jake’s renaissance man movie-making abilities, and thinks he has it in him to direct a feature film on his own. So what does End Of Watch director David Ayers think of all this? “Absolutely!” he answers emphatically when VH1 News caught up with him at the red carpet premiere. “He gets in everything. He’s brilliant, he’s meticulous, he’s very thoughtful, and he always has the interest of the movie at heart.” David explains that in addition to his stellar acting performance, Jake also acted as his producing partner for the film. “He did a fantastic job,” he adds.
Jake was more modest about his Executive Producer credit, saying that he didn’t do it for the glory but because the finances for the film were so low! “We were asking for favors. I was calling up Eric Garcetti and being like, ‘Can you be the mayor in our movie?’ All the time there’s stuff like that.” In recognition for all of his wheeling and dealing, Ayers award Jake the all-important title. “It was one of the best days of my career so far,” he says of the moment he learned he was being named an Executive Producer. “I love making movies. To me it’s my life, I grew up in that. And to be honored as part of the film making process was just such an honor.” Will Jake follow in the footsteps of fellow acting A-listers like Ben Affleck, Angelina Jolie, and George Clooney and make the jump into the directorial part of the film process? We can see it happening!
Kourtney and Kim Kardashian have already taken New York, and now they’re more than ready to take Miami! The reality sisters have released a poolside promo video for their upcoming spinoff, set to air this coming January. The bikini filled clip is getting us all hot and bothered, in more ways than one. There’s something sort of eerie and detached about the video, which features the voluptuous Kim diving into the deep end of a pool. Metaphor alert, anyone?
Things get weirder as she slides beneath the water and hostile voices from the upcoming season surround her. Is this a homage to Dustin Hoffman’s underwater isolation in the 1967 classicThe Graduate? Is she drowning in negativity? The undertones of this simple bikini preview are surprisingly dark! Which is funny because the spinoff is set to mark the television debut of the newest Kardashian: little kitten Mercy! The sisters have been seen out and about filming for the new series while bringing the little fuzz ball along. And his cuteness is undeniable. So there you have it: crippling existential despair and kittens. It’s the Kardashian way!
We’re still not sure if Ryan Lochte is actually dating Miss USA Olivia Culpo or if the two are just enjoying each other’s company enormously during New York Fashion Week. What we do know, thanks to an interview with E! and another VH1 News’ Janell Snowden, is that she seems like his ideal woman.
“I want a girl that can actually take care of herself that’s not always looking for me to take care of them, they can hold their own,” he told VH1. “And if a girl can make me laugh and smile, because that’s what life is all about is just having fun, so if a girl can do that to me, I’m sold.”
And you may recall that his words to E! about Olivia included mentions of her “great sense of humor” and how impressed he was that she won Miss USA after just a year of participating in pageants. It’s meant to be!

Meanwhile, after seeing Ryan out and about at the shows all week long, sporting various forms of subdued, casual menswear, we wonder what fashion item gives him the most confidence when he heads out into the world. One of those great leather jackets he’s been wearing? That grill? His Speedo? Nope. “My watch,” he told Janell, showing off his blingy Breitling. “I designed this. I got it custom-made with black diamonds.” And how much does that bit of confidence set you back? “About 60 grand.”
Olivia, if you ever want a break from making Ryan laugh, we’re next in line. Here’s a closer look at that watch: Read more…
So Bethenny Frankel likes her clothes, you guys. A lot. When we interviewed her at New York Fashion Week, the Real Housewives star spoke about her wardrobe in the same awestruck tone that people speak about their children, significant other, or God. According to her, it’s been her primary motivator in life, and is the reason she’s done pretty much everything done, ever.
“My closet is a shrine to be prayed to,” she says. “I waited 40 and a half years for that closet. Everything I’ve ever done, ever cocktail I’ve ever swilled and hawked. Every piece of shape-wear I’ve ever sewn was all to get to the point where I have the closet that I now have.” Wow. What else can you say to that, really? But the outspoken Skinnygirl spokes-lady wasn’t done. “People are coming out of the closet? I want to go back in the closet!”
So there you have it: this lady devoted her life to clothes. But even more importantly, what couture would she rather die than wear? “I wouldn’t be caught dead in Aladdin pants, those Sinbad pants. I wouldn’t be caught dead in acid wash.” She also admits a weakness for a certain fashion no-no. “I am often caught dead in a camel toe. As much as I try to avoid it, and as much as I love a jumpsuit, camel toe is my best friend.” We’re going to take some time come to terms with the fact that we just typed that. In the meantime, you should head down to the gallery below and see more familiar faces who hit up New York Fashion Week!
As prevalent as Twitter is among both celebs and regular folks alike, we sometimes forget what a huge step it is for someone, particularly a public figure, to decide to put it all out there, 140 characters at a time.
“I’ve stayed away from Twitter for a long time because I didn’t trust myself with such a very intimate but public way of relating to the world,” Twilight star and Twitter newcomer (@reasereaser) Elizabeth Reaser told VH1′s Kate Spencer on the red carpet at the VMAs. “But I feel like I’ve studied it enough, and I realized I was going on other people’s Twitter pages and I love seeing what my friends are up to. I love communicating with people, and I’ve actually kind of fallen in love with it.
“It’s a legal form of voyeurism, and I’m into it,” she added. “You don’t have to leave the house but you can communicate.”
After just five days on the service, Reaser admitted, “I’m really addicted to it now. It’s embarrassing. I’m having a really good time.” And we’re having a good time following her. In addition to chatting with her onscreen husband Peter Facinelli as they took in the VMAs last night, the actress also shared a couple of awesome pictures of herself: first in the car on the way to the show, then with the Fierce Five.
“I look forward to that performance that people will be talking about for 10 years,” fun. guitarist Jack Antonoff told VH1′s Kate Spencer last night on the VMA red carpet. “I have a feeling that might be Alicia Keys tonight.”
His feeling may prove true, but not just due to Keys’ soaring vocals during “Girl on Fire.” Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas showed up onstage to deliver a bit of her floor exercise/dance in the middle of the song, definitely demonstrating what a girl on fire looks like.
Other celebs on the red carpet were likely satisfied with the performances of their faves, too. “One Direction just showed up!” the entire cast of MTV’s Inbetweeners practically squealed like tween girls, before breaking out into the boy band’s “What Makes You Beautiful.”
Besties Rihanna and Katy Perry seemed to be fans of nothing as much as each other all night. Their adorable shared whispers were the best cutaway shots of the show.
And Ne-Yo disclosed his plans for the night: “[I'm a] huge, huge fan of Pink; she never disappoints. I haven’t stalked anybody today, I think she’s going to be my target.”
