In a cruel twist of pop culture fate, some of our most beloved movies, TV series, and musicals only exist in other movies, TV series, and musicals! From SMASH’s fictional Broadway show, Marilyn, to Scream’s delightfully meta Stab series, we rounded up our favorite shows-within-a-show — now someone get on Kickstarter and get these gems made. You need no other reminder that the Golden Globe Awards are not just the Oscars and Emmys light than what the fashion-forward stars were wearing to on the red carpet. Sure, there were plenty of pretty ball gowns and shimmery sheaths, but some of our favorites knew that this was the event where they could take risks and go big with crazy prints and unconventional cuts. Sienna Miller, for instance, took a dress that could have come out of your crazy aunt’s mod closet from the ’60s, but the Erdem separates’ fit and her minimal makeup made it work. Anne Hathaway also went for separates, in glittery white Chanel, that showed of her body to perfection while also giving her a relaxed air. We’re kind of amazed that Lucy Liu’s Carolina Herrera did not remind us too much of wallpaper.
There were some more conventional wins tonight too — Claire Danes in a figure flattering red Versace, Julianne Moore in elegant black and white blocking by Tom Ford. And some on-trend looks we loved: Kerry Washington’s sheer with silver details. And overall, we think it was a successful night for most of the stars — whether they opted to take risks or not. Look through our 10 faves and tell us if you agree!
We love that moment when watching the red carpet of the Golden Globes when you can hear a collective gasp from the on-air commentators, Twitter and your next door neighbors. Tonight’s came when Katharine McPhee stepped up to Ryan Seacrest’s interview stage. Dayyyum! The American Idol alum turned Smash star wore a jaw-dropping black Theory gown and probably a LOT of double stick tape to keep her assets from breaking free from a neckline that dipped toward her navel. And she certainly wasn’t the only one showing off the ladies, despite the frigid temperatures.
Globes co-host Amy Poehler clearly enjoyed the attention her cleavage garnered at the Emmys and gave it a repeat performance on the red carpet, this time with a tuxedo jacket. Claire Danes was sporting an equally hot, but slightly more traditional plunging V, courtesy of Versace. Other ladies, like Sarah Hyland, were less about the plunge, and more about the tight corset effect.
So far, Lena Dunham has the best boob coverage of the night, as she repeated her stylist’s advice on how properly to adjust her figure-flattering gown. “My breasts have a tendency to shove things to the right.” Check out the best globes of the night so far and stay tuned as we add more!
If there’s one trend we’ve been spotting taking over red carpets in 2012 alone, it’s been the juicy summer brights look. We’ve been happy to see every shade of orange and yellow seep onto a variety of silhouettes over the year, from the very start of January. The Oscars, the Met Ball, the Golden Globes and the big premieres — hello, The Hunger Games — all had these shades represented by actresses who are not afraid to embrace the bright side. The Met Ball alone really took care of this huge trend with a number of actresses choosing orange like Kristen Bell and Emma Roberts. Solange Knowles and January Jones really took care of the yellow spectrum. Some celebrities have been more courageous than others, wearing brights on numerous occasions. Like, Viola Davis, Nicole Richie and Elizabeth Banks. Each of those lovely ladies is represented in our exhaustive gallery of 25 pictures below. This collection comprises our favorite looks — all worn this year, from January onwards — which are all either orange or yellow, keeping the trend in mind. You’ll also see where exactly they were worn, in case you want to do a little digging on your own. Knock yourselves out on these punchy shades and tell us whose design you liked best!
Jennifer Hudson may not have won the third season of American Idol many moons ago, but she is definitely winning in her life as it stands now. J. Hud is one of the rare singers whose acting chops come closely equal to her powerful voice. When word spread about her role as Winnie Mandela in the biopic Winnie, we were excited to see what the Oscar winning singer could do with the role of the anti-apartheid historical figure. Alongside Terrence Howard who plays Nelson Mandela it looks like J. Hud may have nailed it. Read more…
Some major television star power showed up at the NBC Upfront preview party in New York on Monday, representing a fair amount of our favorite shows and new ones we can’t wait to see. One of those would be Parks and Recreation and the shows lead, Amy Poehler looked like a stone cold fox in a Nicole Miller dress, House of Lavande jewelry and an All Saints leather jacket. Other funny ladies, Up All Night co-stars Maya Rudolph and Christina Applegate also represented. Eva Longoria was glam in a deep red Alberta Ferretti dress with Brian Atwood pumps. She probably made sure not to stand right next to Jenny McCarthy, whose sexy fuchsia shift would have clashed horribly next to it!
Katharine McPhee took over our TV sets once before during her unforgettable run on American Idol back in 2006. And now she’s at it again, with the staring role in NBC’s Smash! The dramatic new series features McPhee as Karen Cartwright, an up-and-coming performer with some serious star power who gets her first shot at the big time. Sound familiar? It’s the role Katharine was born to play! The show premiered last night to record breaking numbers, and we can’t wait to see what’s to come.
But that’s not the only reason Kat is on everyone’s lips today. Her sizzling photo shoot for the March issue of GQ hit stands today, and it’s adding fuel to the flames. Screw the Giants parade, Katharine McPhee officially owns the day as far as we’re concerned. Take a look at the gallery below for her 20 most “smashingly” hot looks. Enjoy!
The Golden Globes red carpet looks from this evening’s ceremony seemed to fall into two distinct categories: delightfully lovely, and highly, highly questionable. Is Jessica Biel actually wearing an old ill-fitting wedding dress? Was there no other, better way to get the message across to Justin? Was Zooey Deschanel‘s gown literally made out of Astroturf? How did Tilda Swinton get so insane-pantsuit fabulous? Check out the Golden Globes 20 Most Questionable Looks and let us know which look had you scratching your head the most.
Lady, we just don’t get your sense of humor.Katharine McPhee tweeted a message yesterday. Sounds pretty regular, right? Wrong. Because Ms. Katharine was on a flight. Her message read, “I love illegally turning on my phone when I’m still in the air…makes me feel powerful! A tweet from the sky. Hello Atlanta!”  Here’s the thing. You can’t do that, Katherine. Because it’s against the law!
Her rep’s all about the damage control, telling TMZ, who posted the story, “She posted when we landed in Atlanta. She was trying to be funny but obviously some people missed the humor.”  Funny, real funny. Katharine herself tweeted TMZ, writing, “Ummm…just to clarify, you can’t use your phone at 36,000 feet @tmz. It doesnt work up there! Just sayin.”
You’re saying that, because you’ve tried it, haven’t you.
She wrote: “Just had a lovely experience at the local Sherman oaks hospital. Was hit from behind pretty dang hard. My one regret was not wearing…” she continued in a second tweet, “Makeup today because all the fireman & policeman were sooooo hott! And sweet! I will be ok. Soar [sic] but ok.”
Nothing like some hot TLC to make you feel better.
