8 Mile Turns 10 Years Old Today! Take A Look Back At Our 20 Favorite Rappers Turned Movie Stars

The 20 Greatest Rappers Turned Actors

When we were freshmen in high school ten years ago, Eminem’s portrayal of  struggling rapper Jimmy “B-Rabbit” Smith (A.K.A. himself) in 8 Mile was an inspiration. The monster hit “Lose Yourself” from the soundtrack became our personal pump up jam to run laps during gym class, and gave us the confidence to take that “one shot” and ask Jenna to the prom, try out for the class play, or pass that chem test! Plus it was also notable for changing the way we thought of the phrase “mom’s spaghetti” forever.

However as we got a little older, we realized the one shot ol’ Marshall Matthers was rapping about was much more serious than our day to day high school drama. It was about reconciling hopes and dreams with growing up and responsibility, all against the bleek Detroit backdrop. By no means a quick flick rushed out to capitalize on his skyrocketing fame, Eminem gave an incredible performance, made all the more amazing considering it was his first movie!

But Eminem is by no means the only rapper who tried his hand at acting. In fact, it seemed like every MC has made the jump to films at one time or another. Some totally killed it and became a successful multi-talented crossover artist, while others…made Soul Plane. So in honor of Em’s epic 8 Mile turning 10 years old today, we’ve decided to take a look back at some of our favorite rappers-turned-movie stars over the years. Enjoy!

Diddy Flips Out At Club Dude For Drinking Non-Diddy Endosed Vodka

Diddy apparently has strong feelings about vodka, as one club go-er learned the hard way over the weekend. The incident began last Saturday night after the 2011 BET Hip-hop Awards in Atlanta. Diddy and his entourage rolled over to the nearby Compound club after the show, where a reveler named Ricky Parker was apparently drinking Grey Goose vodka. Whether he was doing this to intentionally piss Diddy off remains to be seen, but the rapper/Circoc Vodka spokesman definitely wasn’t happy. We’re sure he meant to express his displeasure at Ricky’s beverage choice in a sane, calm, and rational manner, befitting a man of Diddy’s stature. However, it came out of his mouth as: “B-tch ass n—s! Put that s–t down before I come smack that purple shirt off your ass!”

Things got even worse as Diddy reportedly threw ice at the man, then began screaming racial and homophobic slurs. Good thing fellow rapper T.I. was on hand to step in as the voice of reason. “Let them n—-s drink what the f–k they want man,” he begged his buddy Diddy over the club’s PA system. “I’d go to war with you, but come on man, let’s go.” T.I.’s an experienced negotiator, having already talked down a suicidal jumper, so we’re glad he was around to calm Diddy down.

It took Diddy a few days of chilling out to realize his over reaction, but last night he took to his twitter account to apologize for how he acted. “I’m sorry for the ignorant way I repesented [SIC] myself,”  he typed. “I have backslid and regressed. Forgive me for my ignorance. Pray for me pls. I know better and I am better.” One dude who won’t be forgiving the rapper anytime soon is Ricky Parker, who tells TMZ that he feels “humiliated and disrespected” by Diddy. “You won’t ever hear me support him from this moment forward.” Maybe Diddy should buy him a drink? Check out the vid of the incident under the jump!

Ok, For Real This Time: T.I. Released From Prison Again

Let’s try this again. T.I. is a free man once more after being released from prison yesterday. No, you’re not having deja vu; the rap star was initially sprung from the slammer on August 31st, but he only spent a day in his Atlanta-area halfway house before being ordered back into federal custody due to a “transport dispute.” Although the true reason is hotly debated by both sides, the official explanation from the Feds is that they weren’t down with T.I.’s luxury bus, as well as the unauthorized peeps on board. Apparently Tip can’t have whatever he likes. His wife “Tiny” Cottle calls BS, saying that the prison officials were fully aware of the pimped out ride, and even posed for pictures with it!

There were also rumors that the rapper conducted business aboard the bus with a camera crew for his upcoming VH1 reality series, but those reports have been fiercely denied by T.I. and his team. “T.I. did not intend to violate his transfer furlough or any other B.O.P. rules en route from the prison facility in Arkansas to the halfway house in Atlanta,” his lawyer Steve Sadow told TMZ. But now the issue has been resolved and T.I. has returned to the Dismas Charities halfway house, where he is to remain until September 29th. And not to worry, T.I. fans: the first pix released of him show that the King still has his swag.

Luxury Bus Flap Lands T.I. In Hot Water With The Feds

After only one day of freedom following his ten month prison term, rapper T.I. has been sent back to federal custody once again last night. His lawyer denies that T.I. violated any terms of his probation, but instead claims that there was an issue with his method of transport from the Arkansas prison to the halfway house in Atlanta. Apparently TIP celebrated his semi freedom by renting a baller luxury bus, which—let’s face it—is exactly what we’d want to do if we were just released from prison. But apparently the Federal Bureau of Prisons is also the Federal Bureau of Buzzkill, and are very not cool with his deluxe vehicle. Steezin’ is not a crime!

His lawyer Steve Sadow tells TMZ that “We are awaiting the opportunity to quickly resolve whatever the issue may be that the Federal Bureau of Prisons has with TI’s method of transportation, bus, from Arkansas to Atlanta, so that T.I. can return to the halfway house to complete the remaining days of his sentence.” T.I.’s uncle says that there were no drugs or alcohol of any kind on the bus, and he showed up to the halfway house in great shape. “He stopped drinking a long time ago,” the uncle added.

There’s also trouble brewing for VH1′s proposed reality series about T.I.’s return to free living. Apparently the halfway house flatly refuses to allow taping on its premises. A representative for Dismas Charities, where T.I. is set to serve out the remaining one month of his sentence, tells TMZ that there is “absolutely no way” VH1 is allowed to film. “It’s just not going to happen.” Damn, that’s a lot of drama for episode one!

T.I. Starts Shooting A New Reality Show On Post-Prison Life

He’s only been out of prison a day, and already T.I. is involved in a shooting…for his new reality series, that is! *zing* The rapper has begun filming a new show that will chronicle life after his ten month prison sentence. In fact, the cameras apparently started rolling mere minutes after his release. The series will air on our very own VH1, which says the show will follow T.I. as he “re-adjusts to life as a free man.” The series has yet to be given a title, but it’s going to be choc full of intimate moments, including his emotional reunion with his wife and kids. It sounds like a real heart-stopper, nail-biter, tear-jerker, and other bodily functions we haven’t even considered! “Can the King stay on the straight and narrow while juggling the chaos of his kingdom?” asks the press release? Drama.com! The show is scheduled to premiere on December 5th. Will you be tuning in?

T.I. Released From Prison

T.I. is a free man today after being released from the Arkansas prison that has been his home since last fall. The rapper was sentenced in November for violating his probation stemming from a 2009 federal gun conviction. But now it seems like he’s getting sprung early, after serving only ten months of his eleven month sentence. Out early for good behavior, perhaps? It wouldn’t surprise us, after his slew of good deeds before going behind bars. Who could forget the time he talked down a suicidal jumper?! Maybe the police are gonna use him to fight crime.

TIP celebrated his triumphant return to freedom with an equally triumphant return to twitter. “The storm is over & da sun back out,” he wrote. “IT’S OUR TIME TO SHINE SHAWTY!!!!! Welcome to the beginning of our Happy Ending!!!!”  It looks like he’ll have the save the champagne celebrations for later, because for now he faces time in an Atlanta halfway house. But that doesn’t seem to matter much to him. “Feels great to be back where I belong,” he also tweeted. “Back in the arms of those who need me the most.”

Drug Charges Against T.I.’s Wife Dropped

T.I. and Tameka "Tiny" Cottle

Tameka “Tiny” Cottle may not be allowed to jerk off husband T.I. in prison, but at least she won’t be joining him there. The LA County DA’s Office dropped drug charges against Cottle upon her completion of 24 sessions of counseling back home in Georgia. The couple were caught with pills in their car last September.

Some of you might be wondering “hey, how come she just got treatment while T.I. went back to prison?” Fact is, TI was never charged for drugs at all! Nope, the 11-month stint T.I.’s serving stems solely from his probation violation. Thank goodness Tiny wasn’t stockpiling automatic weapons, too.

T.I. In Trouble After Wife Gives Him A Hand (Under The Table)

T.I. & Tiny

Come on, po-pos! First you won’t let T.I. stockpile automatic weapons, then you won’t let T.I. have ecstasy pills, and now you won’t even let T.I. get a handjob from his wife in prison? Talk about No Mercy! TMZ says the convict is in hot water after his wife Tameka “Tiny” Cottle‘s hand slipped below the table during visiting hours at the Arkansas State Prison he’s serving in. Hopefully her attentions were worth it, as the rapper has been sent to a “special housing unit” as punishment for the indiscretion.

Tameka told the site that she hasn’t seen her man since she was caught T.I.P.-handed, but hopes to be allowed to visit him again soon. Maybe next time she’ll just bake him a cake with a Fleshlight in it.

T.I. Says Sending Him Back To Jail Was “Petty,” Compares His Persecution To MLK’s

T.I.

Jesus, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Muhammad Ali…and now T.I.. At least that’s how the rapper sees his return to prison for probation violation, comparing his troubles to those of the aforementioned heroes in a Vibe Magazine cover story. “[People] did it to every great person you could possibly think of. When it was all good, they was with them. When things got bad, then they was against them.” But King didn’t fail a drug test while on probation for federal gun charges, you say? Well, the guy who recorded King can explain that, too. “The person who was just in jail for machine guns and silencers turns his life around. And now you want to crucify him—for what? Three pills. I mean, of course it’s wrong and unacceptable and inexcusable. No problem. But in the grand scheme of things, it’s rather petty…All that could have been going wrong—if I was riding with more guns, or if I had gotten into a shoot-out and killed somebody, then I could see that. But just think about it. I’ve gotten it down to this much.” For the record, killing someone in a shoot-out while on probation would probably get you more than the 11 months T.I. is scheduled to serve.

It should also be noted that T.I. got a remarkably light sentence the first time around, spending a year shooting movies, recording tracks and starring in a reality show about his community service before serving 9 months in prison. In fact, it might be the fact that he was supposed to be a role model for kids that got him sent away for just a little bitty bit of chemical abuse, which T.I. claims started with legal pain pills. “I had like five, six prescriptions. So I had, like 80 pills. Everybody else might have a drink or smoke a blunt, I took a pain pill. Times when I had 18-, 20-hour days, I’d take a pain pill. And eventually I developed—I guess—the beginning stages of dependence.” Here’s hoping that dependence ends with the ecstasy cops found in his car.

T.I. Lives His Life In Jail, Again

T.I. is in jail, people. He began his 11-month sentence yesterday afternoon at an Arkansas prison facility. This isn’t something new for him, because he also did a 7-month stint in the slammer in Arkansas last year. He’s been in a whole mess after being booked for drug possession in September, which in turn stymied his probation for a federal gun conviction.

T.I’s wife, Tameka ‘Tiny’ Cottle has her own battle to face now. She was charged along with T.I. when they were arrested for possessing a controlled substance, which was apparently ecstasy.  Tameka is pleading not guilty but didn’t turn up at the courthouse to do so, choosing to go through her lawyer instead. Going from “I do” to “I didn’t do it!” isn’t the best way to start a new life together, but we wish ‘em the best!
