Outrageous Moments from ’80s and ’90s Daytime Talk Shows

View Photo Gallery

In the ’80s, soap operas ruled the airways. But a shift occurred late in the decade — when everyone started noticing that talk shows hosted by Phil Donahue and Geraldo Rivera were becoming more and more deliciously controversial (anything to drag eyeballs away from the marital affairs and amnesia plotlines of soaps). With sensational story topics like midget-tossing, paternity suits, neo-Nazi nonsense, brawling transvestites, and grisly murders, several talk shows followed their lead. Enter “Trash TV,” which featured the likes of Jenny Jones, Ricki Lake, Maury Povich, and Jerry Springer.

J.R. Martinez Wins Dancing With The Stars

Congratulations to J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff who took home the mirror-ball trophy in last night’s finale of Dancing With the Stars. The duo beat out Rob Kardashian and Ricki Lake for the prize, and J.R. isn’t planning to let go of it anytime soon. He told E!, “I joked about gluing it on the hood of my car and just driving around L.A. Or be like rappers and make a chain out of it and just wear it around! I’m going to cherish this thing every single day!”

It’s also a love fest between the three finalists, so don’t expect an sore loser comments. After the show, Ricki said, “I was the last girl standing! I really kicked ass tonight with my tango. I’m really proud. I’m very happy for J.R. and Karina. They were so very deserving, and Rob and Cheryl were amazing, so third is good in my book!” Continuing the feel-good sentiment was Rob, who added, “I really did put it all out there. It was up to the fans, and J.R. deserved to win. I’m super happy, and I learned so much about myself.”

So, now that it’s all over, we wanted to ask you whether you think the correct person won. Let us know in the poll below.

Ricki Lake Is Engaged!

Ricki Lake is getting hitched, y’all! Her now-fiance Christian Evans just popped the question and Ricki tweeted a confirmation saying, “Thrilled to share some happy news with you….. I’m engaged!” Congratulations to the couple! They’ve been together since last summer so he must have been a huge support when Ricki’s house burnt down in September last year. Obviously things have been on the up-and-up since then. This is the second marriage for Lake who was previously with artist Rob Sussman. She’s brightly optimistic about part deux of wedded bliss saying, “I’m totally in love. I’m happier than I’ve ever been.” How about some dates, venues, and other deet’s, guys? Mazel Tov!

Ricki Lake’s House Burns Down

This could have turned out very badly, so we’re thankful everyone’s okay. Ricki Lake‘s Malibu rental home burnt down over the weekend, and as you can see from this picture, there’s pretty much nothing’s left. What’s even more frightening is that she was in the house, along with her two sons and dog when it started going up in flames, but luckily, managed to get out safely.

She told firemen that she was trying to refuel a heater when the couch caught fire, and being a wooden home, things quickly went downhill from there. Lake’s currently crashing with friends, and apparently, lost a lot of personal stuff in the fire, which is, as it would be for everyone, quite traumatic. Glad everyone’s safe though!

Ricki Lake Makeover: Fab Or Fail?

Actress and documentary film maker Ricki Lake has long struggled with her weight. She started her career in the John Waters‘ flick Hairspray, at the time calling herself “big, blonde and beautiful,” but later admitted to crash dieting during this time. In 1993, the star landed her own talk show, which erupted into an unexpectedly huge hit. But behind the success, Ricki was struggling to get her weight under control.  In 1994 she lost more than 100 pounds, but her method was unhealthy. “I was starving myself. I was fainting,” she later said.

At her heaviest, the star weighed in at 260 pounds and was a size 24. But in 2006-2007, Ricki began eating meals delivered from “Fresh Dining” and she “went from a 12-14 to a size 6.” These days, she’s as sexy as ever and loving her look. “For the longest time, when I was very heavy, I couldn’t cross my legs,” she told US Weekly in 2007. “I couldn’t physically do it. LOVE that I can cross my legs now.”
