Happy New Year, Fablifers! As we wrap up our Best of 2011 lists, we wondered what our future selves will think about the past year’s big trends. In fashion, there were a whole lot of animal prints, mismatched ’90s-reminiscent patterns, super-high heels, super-low-cut gowns, see-through gowns, missing pants, giant fur vests and a whole lot of geriatric-looking outfits. All sorts of ladies died their hair pink or applied Steven Tyler-ish feathers to their locks. Men continued to wear mustaches and beards. On the Internet, TMI Twitpics went to a whole new level (thanks, Anthony Weiner). On TV and in movies, nostalgia reigned, while in books, it was all about fear for the future.
We asked some prominent tastemakers which 2011 trends they think we’ll regret someday soon and got a surprisingly diverse response.
Since we listed our 25 favorite vampires of 2011 last week and asked you to vote for your own, the polls have been HOT. Edward and Damon are neck and neck, but Bones is coming up from behind, as book fans seem to have caught onto the race. It’s exciting to watch on our end (Vampire Academy fans from Russia are a force to be reckoned with!), so we decided to leave polls open until 11 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. In the meantime, let’s look back at who this unusual collection of celebrities would name Vampire of the Year for 2011.
“Anyone from True Blood. They’re all brilliant and fabulous,” Heather Matarazzo told us. And her sentiments were echoed by True Blood werewolf Joe Manganiello: “It would probably be a tie between Stephen Moyer and Alex Skarsgard. I really can’t pick one or the other.”
Alexander Skarsgard’s dad obviously is a big Eric Northman fan as well. “It’s my vampire genes!” Stellan Skarsgard told us.
“Bella Swan!” Elizabeth Reaser said, choosing her on-screen daughter-in-law over her own adoptive “children.”
David Cook went old school, ignoring the “of 2011″ part of the title and choosing Brad Pitt’s Louis de Ponte du Lac from Interview With a Vampire.
Then there were the even less-obvious choices. Questlove nominated Count Chocula. “Hands down, he’s been vampire of the year for me for the last couple of decades.” Read more…
We’re gonna level with you, dear readers. Here at the FABLife, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson will get our vote for the cutest couple every year until the end of time. That’s just the way it goes! So, to make it fair for all of the other adorable love birds out there, we’ve taken them out of the competition. But we’ve made Robsten the gold standard by which we measure and rank the rest of the sweethearts! So please Twihards, don’t send us angry letters.
Sure, 2011 was largely seen as the Year of the Breakup. That doesn’t mean love didn’t flourish! We’ve asked stars who they think should earn the title of “Cutest Couple 2k11,” and their answers ranged from the predicable, to the, err … not so predictable. Tehmina Sunny and Amadou Ly both share our Robsten 4Lyfe sentiments, whereas David Cook and Chelsea Rendon were more Selena Gomez/Justin Bieber people. Roots drummer Questlove was pumped that puppet pals Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy got back together in the Muppets reboot, while Robin Thicke felt that Charlie Sheen and his nose candy made the perfect duo. Err, adorable, right? Watch the vid to see what other celebs had to say!
Strong winds weren’t going to keep Hollywood celebs from paying tribute to Michael Jackson at the LA premiere of This Is It last night. Everyone from Will Smith to Ian Ziering made the scene, with Paris Hilton stealing the “Look At Me!” Award from Jermaine “Sgt. Pepper” Jackson with her giant gold safety pins. While pals Katy Perry and Adam Lambert seemed to be having a great time, Jennifer Lopez‘s hair problems were compounded by a frightening run-in with a clingy fan inside. Don’t grab her arm like that if you want a photo, people! A polite tap will do.

David Cook announced the death of his older brother Adam at the Race For Hope marathon this Sunday in DC. Adam’s struggle with cancer was regularly referenced over Season 7 of American Idol, with Adam getting to visit the show after friends and neighbors raised $45,000 for a private plane with a nurse. Cook’s team raised almost $100,000 for brain cancer research at the marathon. “I will be here every year that they will have me,” he told the runners.
Watch David’s performance of “Always Be My Baby,” which Adam saw in person, after the jump.
During the results shows, we always feel a little bad for the contestants since their flaws are re-pointed out for the purpose of bringing everyone up to speed, and then we feel bad for being critical too. While we tend to flip-flop our support for Anoop Desai and Matt Giraud, we do stand by our criticisms of Megan Joy, and finally this week America also seemed to get sick of her too. Anoop and (for some unknown reason) Allison Iraheta were also in the bottom three (seriously America, what’s your beef with Allison?), but poor Megan was sent home to weepily reunite with her baby and caw softly to him to her heart’s content. Some of our other favorite moments follow.
5. The Get-Along Gang
During the “What do these guys do all week?” video we learned a lot about what goes on at their Hollywood mansion – a chef comes in and makes Scott MacIntyre special chocolate cake, Kris Allen practices his sexyface in the mirror, and everyone gets along. There’s a lot of hugging and laughing at the mansion. These guys like each other so much that they do impressions of each other and the songs they’ve all sung. Trust us when we say that we once learned the hard way that doing what you think is a hilarious impression of a friend can lead to severed ties, so we’re impressed that these guys are so good-natured about it. Ryan made them all do some of the impressions on stage, with Matt Giraud and Allison Iraheta impersonating a riff-happy Danny Gokey and Anoop impersonating a yelly Kris Allen. Awkward much?
Obsessed fans be warned, David Cook ain’t havin’ it anymore. Last year Cook became our latest American Idol and the fans that voted for him have gotten so possessive that he was moved to issue a notice to them on his MySpace Blog to back off. Rumors that fans were crazy enough to place GPS devices on his tour bus and follow him and his crew into their hotel to find out his room number caused him to write this:
First off, I want to say thank you to everyone who has been coming out to the shows since my last post. The vibe at these shows has been amazing.
Secondly, I have to address some behavior that has become disturbing. We pride ourselves on being accessible to you as fans, but in contrast, we do enjoy what little privacy we can muster. To that end, the efforts by some fans to find our hotel rooms, call our hotel rooms, attach things to our bus, etc., is something I have to condemn. This relationship only works when it remains healthy for both parties, and should this behavior continue, the only thing we can do is take more preventative measures to maintain our privacy, which in turn makes us less accessible to you.
I hope this doesn’t come off as harsh. I merely want to nip this in the bud so we can continue to have a great experience with all of you at the shows we have coming up. Take care and see you at the next show. — D
While it may seem like a reasonable enough request to some, some of Cook’s MySpace fans think this is an affront to their fan-dom, responding with comments like “Your (sic) an ass. really? maybe they are just huge fans and look up to you. before you became mr. bigshot i bet you had someone you really wanted to meet. you should be honored your fans come out of their way to try to meet you” and “What a tool.” Luckily most other commenters to his blog were more respectful, but it is creepy that certain fans would go to such lengths to follow the guy. Let’s hope they don’t get more drastic and actually try to attach themselves to the underside of the bus or something.
American Idolas a TV show is about as successful as you can get, but people might not realize just how big the empire is. Okay, some of its former contestants probably realized after it was too late that conquering movies was maybe not their thing (From Justin to Kelly to … nowhere). But if you consider their musical track record, it’s pretty impressive. Since the show started in 2002, there have been more than 200 songs by Idol alums to hit the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart. David Cook even had 11 songs from his self-titled debut hit the chart in 2008 in the same week.
We took into account album sales and chart-toppers and threw in a dose of personal favorites to bring you our list of The Top 25 Greatest American Idol Alumni Videos. Some artists show up a few times (Kelly Clarkson bookends the list) and a certain someone only shows up once because his baby face is just too sweet to stare at for too long (David Archuleta, we’re looking at you…). Our methods aren’t scientific, but they do take things like over-cuteness into account.
25. Kelly Clarkson – “My Life Would Suck Without You”
The latest of Clarkson’s singles, it made our list because while it’s a great song, the video sticks to the Clarkson formula that all other Clarkson videos adhere to – shots of Kelly performing with the band, spliced with shots of Kelly freaking out on/about a guy in a series of dramatic reenactments.
24. Bo Bice – “Witness”
Bice’s hair blows so freely — in the wind, in his convertible, by the sheer power of song — throughout the video, we couldn’t turn away. Viewers loved it too, the song spent three weeks at #1 on the VH1 Top 20 in December 2007.
23. Daughtry – “Over You”
“Hi, my name is Sara. Only it’s not, it’s Jessica Szohr, of TV’s Gossip Girl. I’m sorry I just cried throughout this whole video while wrapped in a towel. Actually nevermind – that was probably pretty hot. You’re welcome.”
It’s Idol mania around here, with both David Archuleta and David Cook launching a chart-assault with their debut albums, and rumors that Kelly Clarkson‘s working on one right now. And of course, there are those Idols who’ll seemingly never leave us — like Clay Aiken and Daughtry. Check out videos from some of our favorites, and be sure to enter our David Cook’s “Light On” Contest. Check here for details on how David Cook can see you perform his brand-new hit single, and get some practice by watching these Idols!
