Lily Allen wants to be a wannabe, for real. Allen recent discussed a fantasy she had for this year’s Brit Awards to team up with several of her fellow divas to perform a tribute to The Spice Girls. Though the award show came and went already, we beg Lily to follow through with what we think is a brilliant idea.
Allen explained “I’d be Posh, Adele would be Ginger, Duffy would be Baby, Leona [Lewis] would be Scary and Amy [Winehouse] would be Sporty… She was always the one with the best voice.” Allen had hoped the quintet would be able to recreate the Spice Girls’ first huge hit “Wannabe” onstage. Just the idea of watching Amy Winehouse attempt a backflip in a sports bra makes us tingle with glee. Lily, please don’t give up on this idea, we would give anything to have this happen! Maybe you can bring it up again for the 2010 awards.
Check out Lily’s pals Leona Lewis and Adele on “VH1 Divas,” which will air live on Sept. 17 at 9PM EST. Until then, get your divas fix by reading the full VH1 Divas press release, following the VH1 Divas Twitter and watching videos by the artists in the lineup. Plus, leave a testimonial for one of the divas at divastories.vh1.com.
A-maz-ing. There won’t be any economic miseries in Duffy‘s household this year as it’s been revealed her hit song “Mercy” was the most-played song in the UK last year — netting her a none-too-shabby $150k in royalties alone.
Nice one! Especially since it was less than a year ago that the Welsh wonder commented that she “hadn’t had any money yet” from her singing career. That’s not the case now, clearly – buy us a pint, love?
We had lots of fun live blogging the Brit Awards for you last night from London, which saw Duffy and Kings of Leon among the music stars who triumphed on the night. But we wouldn’t be doing our job without rounding up some of the behind-the-scenes gossip.
- Lady Gaga – who appeared with the Pet Shop Boys for the briefest cameo ever – had the largest entourage backstage. “A total of 16 minders, assistants and managers were crammed into her dressing room – and used a rota to hang out with her,” according to reports. Plus, she was overheard saying, “Who are these people?” about Girls Aloud. Well, until about five seconds ago we hadn’t heard of YOU, love.
- (Gaga also achieved her particular shade of orange by having three spray tans on the day…)

England’s “Grammys” is a huge deal in UK music — and our UK contributor, Becky Howard, is teaming up with PopSugarUK to live blog the show, which features performances by Kings of Leon, Take That, Coldplay, U2, Duffy, Girls Aloud, Adele, Leona Lewis, The Ting Tings and others. Plus, Lady Gaga will be closing the show with a duet with the Pet Shop Boys. Participate in our live blog now and check out PopSugarUK’s Brit Awards coverage.
Hrrrrnk! Tonight sees the “funnest” night ever in British music – The Brit Awards – being broadcast live on UK TV, and live-blogged direct for your amusement in a joint effort by Scandalist and PopSugarUK starting at 2pm EST. What, you don’t know what the Brits are? Shame on you! It’s the Grammys but about as third as long, celebrating the best music of the past year, and legendary for the bad behavior of its attendees.
Back in the 1990s, Robbie Williams challenged Oasis’ Liam Gallagher to a live fight, Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker infamously wiggled his ass onstage at Michael Jackson during the latter’s preposterous “Earth Song,” and only a couple of years ago, presenter Russell Brand raised eyebrows with a few trademark controversial comments (what’s new?) Overseeing proceedings tonight at London’s Earl’s Court are comedy stars James Corden and Mat Horne (hey, they’re big in the UK) with singer Kylie Minogue.
Up for awards or performing live are Kings of Leon, Take That, Coldplay, U2, Duffy, Girls Aloud, Adele, Leona Lewis, The Ting Tings and LOADS more. Plus, Lady Gaga will be closing the show with a duet with the Pet Shop Boys. Woop! See you at 8pm GMT/3pm EST for the unfolding horror/joy. [Photos: WireImage]
Officially. We Brits love eccentric outsiders, and hey, Courtney Love‘s pretty much defined this. But it was still a leftfield decision that saw British Elle magazine name La Love their Woman Of The Year at the Elle Style Awards last night. It could have been Cheryl Cole, who’s transformed from pop star into national treasure. Nah, too obvious. It could have been Adele, Estelle or Duffy, for making it big internationally. Boring! It could have been Kate Winslet, for combining a stellar career, motherhood and supreme hotness. Dullsville! No, we would prefer to honor someone who’s spent the year scribbling incoherent blogs, flashing the paps wearing fashion roadkill and throwing her daughter a “Suicidal 16″ birthday party. Surely there’ve been better years for Courtney?
Never mind, she still rocks. And is it just us, or does she look a hell of a lot like Madonna at the ceremony in London last night? Freaksome. [Photo: Getty Images]
Scandalist has spent the last week looking back and laughing at the questionable winners (and fashions) of Grammys past. Now it’s time to apply that knowledge. Click through the gallery to see who we think will take home trophies at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards this Sunday night.
The 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards snoozed up Liverpool tonight, but left behind plenty of photos worth ogling. Scandalist blogger Becky Howard, who watched the show from London, was stunned that host Katy Perry managed to change outfits six times in one night. The singer dressed up like a carnival ride, a football player, a Barack Obama stumper, and even some kind of hermaphrodite.
In other news: Singers Duffy and Estelle looked super hot during the show; celebrity blogger Perez Hilton looked super ridiculous. (Hey, doesn’t he always?) And Beyonce‘s outfit was a bit hard for us to interpret — but we think she was wearing body armor!
After the jump, Becky Howard comments on all of 2008’s winners.
The celebrity blogger and tireless self-promoter Perez Hilton is bringing his brand of manic-mouthed commentary to Liverpool, where he’ll serve as digital host of the MTV Europe Music Awards on Nov. 6. Not one to mince words, Perez says “if Amy Winehouse isn’t dead by then, I’m going to bring her out of rehab and we’re going to f*ck shit up.”
The real host of the night is singer Katy Perry, who is a nominee for Best New Act — a category in which she was beat out by Tokio Hotel at the American version of the show last month. Performers include Beyonce, Duffy, Pink, Kid Rock and The Killers. After the jump, read a list of this year’s nominees and visit MTV’s Europe Music Awards website to cast your votes.
