Maybe his perpetual Rihanna-Karrueche love triangle wasn’t the real cause of Chris Brown’s tears last night. Instead, it could have to do with the ups and downs of his criminal record. He received good news yesterday, in the form of the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department announcing they were closing the investigation into his alleged parking lot scuffle with Frank Ocean. Read more…
You know a really great way to win public support for yourself? Compare yourself to Jesus Christ on the cross. At least that’s what Chris Brown in his notorious foot-in-mouth social media manner must have been thinking yesterday when he posted a painting of (a very muscular) Jesus on Instagram with the caption, “Painting the way I feel today. Focus on what matters.” This was after we all learned that his posse got into an altercation with Frank Ocean’s posse in the parking lot of a recording studio on Sunday night.
If we’re to believe CB’s lawyer, Mark Geragos (and/or the sources who spoke to TMZ), there is some truth to the Christ analogy. Reportedly, there is surveillance footage that shows both Brown and Ocean stayed out of the melee and left any fighting up to their entourages. The only glitch being that this video didn’t capture the beginning of the fight, so it basically proves nothing. These sources also explained to TMZ that Chris didn’t stick around to talk to the sheriff’s department because his lawyer had advised him to get far, far away from any site of trouble.
Except we think he meant before any fights started, not after.
Full confession: We have almost come to blows with people over parking spots. Almost. But apparently, if you’re Chris Brown and Frank Ocean, accompanied by you’re entourage, and the spot in question is outside a recording studio, that “almost” turns into full-on fight with the sheriff’s department being called. Who hit whom and who started it? Here’s what we know so far:
Chris’ version: According to TMZ, sources close to Brown say the singer was leaving the Westlake Studio on Sunday night when Ocean and Co. blocked him from getting out, saying, “This is my studio, this is my parking spot.” When Brown went to shake his hand, a member of Ocean’s entourage went in for the attack, and one of Brown’s guys stepped in and hit Ocean’s guy. That’s when Frank went after Chris. Brown and his reps haven’t commented directly on the altercation, but he did post a photo of himself in the studio on Instagram with the caption: “Working on my album. Not working on negativity. Focus on feeding ya family. Bulls— will forever be in the shadows.”
Oh Frank Ocean. After you dropped your critically acclaimed debut album, sang at the VMAs and came out on Tumblr, only to have celebs like Beyonce go out of their way to support you, thus proving that there is some shred of goodness left in the world, it’s no wonder you thought you were on a long-term winning streak. Your utterly amazing 2012 is also probably the reason you were cocky and/or foolish enough to drive 90mph in a 65mph zone while smoking pot. You’re like the new Icarus, Frank. You flew too high on wings of weed! Which would actually explain the legend of Icarus…
According to TMZ, the “Bad Religion” singer was pulled over in Mono County, California on New Year’s Eve for speeding in his BMW. The arrested officer noticed the vehicle smelled like like the set of a Harold & Kumar sequel, and promptly found marijuana in Ocean’s possession. Frank was cited for “marijuana possession, driving on a suspended license, and tinted windows,” in addition to having his license revoked. We say just shake it off, Frank. We were kidding about the Icarus stuff! We have no interest in watching you serve jail time or plummet it out of the sky or any of that stuff this coming year.
It was the year of the underdog. Odd Future crooner Frank Oceanwent off on his own and captured the world’s attention with his stellar songwriting. Doing very few interviews, and rarely figuring on TV or in front of paparazzi cameras, even during the promotion of his debut album Channel Orange. Ocean let his music speak for itself. With one big exception: the letter he wrote on his Tumblr on July 3. It was a missive that he’d originally planned to include in his liner notes disclosing that his first love was a man. His coming out was met with cheers from fans and peers, who applauded his bravery. A week later, his debut shot to No. 2 on the Billboard charts selling over 130,000 units in its first week. Frank Ocean’s smooth voice, impeccable songwriting and low-key profile are why he’s #10 on our list of celebrities who dominated 2012.
We’re silently cheering Frank Ocean on as we type this. He posted a long, rambling note on his website yesterday that started off with, “Whoever you are, wherever you are … I’m starting to think we’re a lot alike. Human beings spinning in blackness … ” And then came the bit that we’re so happy he’s discussing. Frank details his first relationship, back when he was 19 years old, with a man. His first boyfriend, we’re assuming. He’s now 24, so this was five years ago. “4 summer ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too,” Frank writes. “We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Everyday almost. And on the days we were together, time would glide …” The singer goes on to describe this perfect symmetry they shared in really idyllic terms, until they hit a roadblock, that is. “By the time it I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless. There was no escaping, no negotiating with the feeling. No choice. It was my first love. It changed my life,” he states.
Frank also talks about then facing the reality about “the other women I had been with, the ones I cared for and thought I was on love with.” He basically goes on to write that all the “sentimental songs” he listened to with those girlfriends were “written in a language I did not yet speak.” He ended up telling his boyfriend how he felt, but it took the unamed BF three whole years to tell Frank that he reciprocated his feelings — he still had a girlfriend at the time. You have to read this open letter — it almost broke our hearts too. While it must be extremely freeing for him to discuss this openly, you can almost feel the wrench when Frank writes about flying home for another “marred Christmas.” Read more…
Taking a break from all of the paternity battle madness, Justin Bieber made some time to hang out with his buddy Jaden Smith recently. It must have been a pretty productive chill sesh, because the two friends recorded their own version of Frank Ocean’s “Thinking Of You” and posted it to their shared Youtube channel. “I hope you like it,” Jaden tweeted this morning as he posted the link. While we definitely do like it, there’s something unsettling about an earbud full of teenage slowjam swag first thing in the morning. But damn, their track could seriously challenge Drake’s Take Care album as the smoothest release of the week. Give it a listen!
