Classic movies transcend time. The impact of iconic movies leads to the inevitable remake decades later. The 1989 Steel Magnolias film is no exception, and is being remade as a Lifetime movie starring a predominantly black cast. And like the original with heavy hitter actresses such as Sally Field, Julia Roberts and Shirley MacLaine, the 2012 remake has enlisted some of Hollywood’s top A-listers to bring a group of six friends together in more modern times.
Throughout her career Jill Scott has rocked as many hairstyles as she has shows. Like her vibrant personality, her hair choices are fun, edgy and unique. In preparation for tonight’s season premiere of VH1 Storytellers featuring Jill Scott, we chatted with celebrity hairstylist Ursula Stephen about the styles she loves most on Jill. If the name Ursula Stephen rings a bell it’s probably because she is the woman solely responsible for Rihanna’s 2008 haircut that turned her into a style icon. She’s also the same stylist on whom Rihanna spent $24,000 to fly out to London to fix a hair emergency this March. Yes, guys, a woman’s hair is that big of a deal. Stephen says she admires Jill for her beauty and confidence. “She shows the girls how to be beautiful with natural hair,” said Stephen. “She’s definitely one of the natural hair icons.”
Gosh, 2001 seems like eons ago, but it was around this time Scott took the music industry by storm due to her first album Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1. At the 2001 Billboard Music Awards, Jill wore a head of full ‘locks in the shape of a crown. Sorry, folks. This isn’t a do it yourself style. Stephen said the best way to achieve this look is through a professional braider.
At the Grammy Jam Fest in 2004, Jill confidently sported an afro with a little variation by changing the shape. To achieve this look, Stephen said Motions Hydrate My Curls adds moisture and defines curls. “The best way to make sure your afro is even is by using an afro pic,” Stephen said. Read more…
Yank on your Spanx and prepare your side eye: the ladies of VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul, which premieres Monday, Dec. 19 at 9PM EST, turned it out on the red carpet. Metallics were huge at the event: Mob Wives‘ Drita D’avanzo slipped into skin-tight gold, Estelle shined in Grecian-style bronze and Love And Hip-Hop 2‘s Emily Bustamante shimmered in off-the-shoulder gunmetal. Jessie J paired her gold with sheer cut-outs and an asymmetrical bob, while The Good Wife‘s Archie Panjabi dressed in slinky black. Jill Scott looked royal in blue, La La Anthony paired a fuchsia lip with herringbone and a slick updo (because she’s business, not casual), and a tiny Jennifer Hudson paired peach with a mint manicure. Looking heavenly, both Mary J. Blige and Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine upped the glamor with glittering white. We hope looking this hot doesn’t ruin anyone’s diva reputation. How can you demand to be shot from your good side when every side looks equally amazing? Check out the gallery below for the ten sexiest looks! (and a few more thrown in for good measure…)

La La Vazquez Anthony asked the most important diva-related question of all time tonight on the VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul red carpet: which performer is destined to be the next Aretha Franklin? Keeping in mind that each performer is talented in his or her own way, plus there will never be another Aretha Franklin, the clearly crowd favorite seemed to be the one and only Mary J. Blige. That being said, you can’t deny singers like Jennifer Hudson, Jill Scott and Jessie J offer some strong, sassy, well-coiffed competition. What do you think? Who should be graced with the title of The Next Aretha?

As Mary J. Blige gets set to perform on VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul (airing Mon., Dec. 19 at 9PM EST), we’ve been wondering why the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul is so universally loved. We’d guess it partially has to do with Mary J. practicing what she preaches in her hit “My Life.” The lyrics, in case you’ve forgotten:
When you’re feelin down
You should never fake it
Say what’s on your mind
And you’ll find in time
That all the negative energy
It would all cease
Mary has always been unafraid to speak her mind, both in her music and to the press. She’s open about her personal struggles and pain, and this feels refreshing in an age when many celebs seem muzzled as part of image campaigns. In other words, Mary J. is always Mary J. She’s moved from a rough life in a Yonkers housing project to A-list mega-star who hangs out at Vanity Fair Oscar parties — all the while retaining impeccable street cred. We usually arrange our Top Hottest Looks photos from least to most hot. But with this feature we’ve arranged them in chronological order. You’ll notice that Mary J. has had a dramatic style metamorphosis over the years. As her fame has grown, it seems her style savvy and number of stylists has too.
Catch VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul Monday, Dec. 19 at 9PM EST. The lineup includes Mary J. Blige, plus Jennifer Hudson, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Florence + The Machine, Kelly Clarkson, Jessie J and many others.
Before we can say anything else, how about Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose getting frisky on the green carpet, huh? The 2011 BET Awards took place at the Shrine Auditorium in L.A last night and the duo looked quite happy wrapped around each other! We’re also loving the Dolce & Gabbana blazer and pants combination Alicia Keys wore to the event and Kerry Washington has our vote with that acidic Michael Kors gown. We also totally expected Nicki Minaj to bring on some full-on cray-cray but it was a half-hearted commitment. We think she actually looked quite pretty in the textured pink dress-tight-boots outfit she was working.
If you want the list of winners, click here, but hint hint: Chris Brown and Busta Rhymes are in there. Also spotted were folks like Nelly, Ne-Yo, Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott (love her) and the Smith kids — Jaden and Willow. Of course, Willow’s pal Justin Bieber was there too. Was there any ground breaking fashion? No, but everyone looked really comfortable which is quite a change! Having said that, we would like to forget all about Amber Rose’s shredded catsuit forever. Take a look at our gallery for all the action!
Janet Jackson hasn’t had the easiest time since that infamous “wardrobe malfunction” in 2004. In the five years since, she’s lost her brother, broken up with long-time boyfriend Jermaine Dupri (though not before he vomited on her in public), suffered vertigo on stage and left her last record label after only one (flop) album. With all the great music she’s given us, we’re glad to see her smiling away at the special screening for Why Did I Get Married Too? in NYC last night, joined by everyone from Jill Scott and the Rev. Al Sharpton to Ice-T and CoCo (yes, star/writer/producer/director Tyler Perry was there too). While the film is unlikely to top the box office when it’s released in April (a little flick called Clash Of The Titans comes out the same day), Perry’s track record suggests Jackson should have another hit on her hands. She’s earned it!
