It was the battle of the volume at the 2012 MTV Europe Music Awards yesterday. While Heidi Klum was OTT in various Versace ensembles and Carly Rae Jepsen was Taylor Swift‘s doppelganger, the likes of Alicia Keys, Lana del Rey and Gwen Stefani stood out by keeping it simple and stylish. Alicia complemented her angular bob with a Stella McCartney ‘Miracle’ dress with its very geometric use of three colors. She paired it with pointed silver Gianvito Rossi metallic pumps. Lana kept it very minimal (almost boring) in a Shareen Mitchell dress and bouffant, backcombed hair. Gwen’s thigh-high boots were amazingly hot with her black draped satin Jean Paul Gaultier outfit.
Going completely in a different direction were Kim Kardashian and Rita Ora who went B.I.G. Kim tweeted that she was wearing “the coolest Stephane Rolland” dress for the show. but this whole mullet silhouette and long train just doesn’t do it for us. It almost got her to fall flat on her face ON STAGE as well. Rita’s gown may cause some people to frown, but we love it. It’s a red taffeta Marchesa ballgown and we think it looks like a dream on her. Not very many people would be able to pull this off, but Rita certainly can. Does it work for you? Who else do you think worked it?

It’s that time of the year again. The leaves are going to start turning soon. Wardrobes are too, to accommodate the changing seasonal trends. It’s a tricky path though, because there’s so much information out there. What we’ve done is gleaned the top 10 trends out of all the tomes of “what to wear” out there and put them on the list. More than anything, these are the 10 trends that our fashion-forward celebrities have been wearing out and about, on magazine covers, in campaigns and for various events and premieres.
1. Burgundy: The plum shade for fall. Anna Wintour put Lady Gaga on the cover of Vogue‘s September issue, so you know it’s a big one for the season.
2. Oversized Coats: Another massive trend this season, be certain that your coat is big enough so it looks voluminous and chic, but not big enough so that you look lost in. Make sure you’re wearing it, and it’s not wearing you. Ashley Olsen got it right on the subscriber cover of Elle UK!
3. Monochrome: This fall trend can be worn in many avatars. Celebrities like Rihanna, Chloe Sevigny and Victoria Beckham have channeled monochrome into different looks — funky, mod and classic. So can you.
4. Modern Country/ Americana: Taylor Swift‘s Vogue cover got this trend spot on. Oversized hats, chunky knits, tweeds have been revived into modern silhouettes. It’s the new nostalgia. Think lots of Rodarte!
5. Capes: When Gwyneth Paltrow wore that white Tom Ford cape and gown to the Academy Awards, there was a collective gasp of … something. Then Lana del Rey wore one to the Met Ball to approval because people started getting used to the idea of capes. Kim Kardashian even wore one in Paris. Yup, it’s big. Read more…
Have we really not had a truly epic VMA beef since Kanye went totally Kanye and snatched Taylor Swift‘s mic in 2009? How time flies. Tonight the MTV VMAs honor those artists who have crafted a truly superior piece of visual art to accompany their music. But a well-crafted celebrity feud? Well, that’s even harder to come by. So we went ahead and predicted some fantasy VMA celebrity feuds for them, just to get the ball rolling! It’s like using The Secret, except you probably shouldn’t use The Secret to have someone yank out Lana Del Rey’s weave…
Earlier this month, we heard stories about Lindsay Lohan, Lady Gaga and Lana Del Rey striking up a friendship and having a little slumber party at the Chateau Marmont in L.A. We kind of shrugged it off as one of those fever dreams we have after writing too many blog posts. Also, they were reportedly just playing board games and watching old movies, so we really didn’t believe it. But yesterday, Gaga posted pics from their ladies’ night on her LittleMonsters.com site.
The speculations about Lana Del Rey and her bouffant being the new face of H&M have been rife for the last couple of months. Well, now the news is well and truly confirmed since the first few shots of Lana as the brand’s new face have surfaced. Voila! The photograph you see above is the singer’s mug for the new H&M autumn campaign and it’s super retro. “The mood is very L.A. noir. It’s inspired by our fall collection, ” says Donald Schneider, H&M’s creative director. The late 1950s/early ’60s totally spring to mind thanks to that fuzzy pink angora sweater, tight micro-shorts in the same shade and winged-eyeliner with the hair, of course. No frills, no fuss, very simple but sexy, the images have been shot by veteran snappers, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Apparently, a campaign video featuring Lana singing a cover of “Blue Velvet” is also due to release on September 19 as part of the advertisement master plan. Her next campaign for winter is also due around the same time. Catch another bonus photograph of Lana right after the jump. What do you think of her first official modelling job? Too much, or too little?
There wasn’t some sort of weird time blip over the weekend, right? Because some seriously retro hairstyles were seen on the likes of fashionistas such as Heidi Klum and Lana Del Rey. Heidi’s hair was teased out into voluminous flicks, as you can see on the left, while she was filming a commercial for Schwarzkopf Taft hairspray in New York. How apt right? The storyline’s pretty hilarious as her very big hair gets caught in the revolving door she’s walking out of. Heidi looked pretty amazo in her navy trench and cobalt blue heels too, but we can’t get over her very luscious ’70’s mane. Giving her serious competition in that department, was Lana, who was spotted in London with what can only be described as a towering bouffant. She performed at the Isle of Wight festival over the weekend, but stopped off in the city for some work commitments including filming at BBC One Studio’s. This look was seen as she was leaving her hotel to canter around the city and perform at the Radio One Big Weekend festival. Lana is the face of H&M now, according to sources at the New York Post, FYI. We’re guessing the campaigns will have a vintage touch because that’s just how the singer rolls. But in terms of big hair, we have to ask — who’s working it more? Heidi’s volume or Lana’s height?

The 65th annual Cannes Film festival kicked off in high style today, as celebs from all around the world descended to the coastal town with their finest clothes and accessories. Eva Longoria and Diane Kruger both made big entrances in huge Cinderella gowns with trains that could stretch all the way to Paris! Jessica Chastain’s dress was a little more streamlined, but definitely drew attention with a plunging neckline. The dudes cleaned up pretty nicely as well, with action stars Bruce Willis and Chris Pine rockin’ the tuxes, but Sacha Baron Cohen (predictably) stole the show when he rode down the red carpet in full Dictator regalia while on the back of a camel. Sure it’s pretty in-your-face, but at least it’s better than drowning Elisabetta Canalis for publicity, right? We’ll go with yes. Check out more incredible styles in the gallery below!

Is it our fault that we love a good sequin? No, right? Because nothing can make a better statement at an event than an embellished gown done right. Case in point, the Met Gala in New York last night was a gold rush with sparkling gowns everywhere! Whether it was Jessica Pare‘s sleek L’Wren Scott column (paired with Tiffany’s jewels and a Louboutin bag) or Kate Upton‘s molten metal Michael Kors, we were hooked. Right off the bat, we’re going to have to tell you who our favorite was, though. The honor goes to Jessica Alba who looked like a vintage dream with her hair done up in side-swept Marcel waves, and a gold Grecian, one-shouldered Michael Kors. That’s two winning looks for the designer already. Our second favorite has got to be newly married Carey Mulligan in a rather space-age looking Prada.
Other assorted lovelies in the metallic zone were Cameron Diaz in a minimal Stella McCartney, Scarlett Johansson in a wonderfully feminine, frothy Dolce & Gabbana and Leighton Meester in a delicate Marchesa with sheer hints. Lana del Rey was so dramatic with her dazzling Altuzarra gown and awesome black cape that we have to applaud her. Nina Dobrev hardly has bad days, does she? It’s also impossible to have a bad day when you’ve got a gorgeous face and body and are wearing a custom Donna Karen Atelier gown. Head to the gallery for all the high-octane glamor.

So, after Guns N’ Roses guitarist DJ Ashba denied that Axl Rose is dating Lana Del Rey, despite the fact that the two were seen leaving L.A.’s Chateau Marmont together last week, Del Rey herself seems to be muddying the waters here. She was seen performing at London’s Jazz Cafe and later arriving at London hotspot Shoreditch House wearing a GNR T-shirt and grinning mischievously, leaving us all to wonder if:
A) They are dating, and Axl doesn’t really feel the need to share everything with his bandmembers.
B) She’s just a really big fan, as she indicated with her song, “Axl Rose Husband.”
C) She’s just f—ing with us all.
Any way they’re just dating ironically? Rumors have been swirling about a potential Axl Rose/Lana Del Rey love match after Lana was spotted rocking out at two consecutive Guns N’ Roses concerts in L.A. recently; the pair were most recently seen climbing into the same SUV and leaving Chateau Marmont together last Friday. Um, hoo boy. Uh…maybe Axl just wanted to name of Lana’s colorist? Or to exchange deep conditioning tips? Or to make the moms of the world gasp audibly, then clutch the front of their blouses while shaking their heads in disappointment?
Luckily for us and/or our lunches, Guns N’ Roses guitarist DJ Ashba says the two singers are not bumping strawberry blond uglies. On a related note, we are so, so sorry for that mental image. “I don’t think they’re dating,” Ashba scoffed to TMZ. If you’re thinking their alleged canoodling sounds like, well, the premise of a Lana Del Rey song, you are frighteningly correct. Turns out, Del Rey had previously recorded a little ditty entitled “Axl Rose Husband,” which makes this whole thing feel something ripped from Satan’s vision board. Oh, of course the Lord of the Underworld uses The Secret; how else would these two crazy kids have even met?
