Oscars Dispatch: Slumdog Kids Flown In For Ceremony

The children who starred in the Oscar-nominated Slumdog Millionaire are being flown into glitzy Los Angeles from India to attend the 2009 Oscars. Two of them (Azharrudin Mohammed, 10, and Rubina Ali, 9) live in Mumbai slums, and all three are being put up in a five-star hotel so they can walk the red carpet at the Academy Awards. None of the children have ever been to the United States: “Not in my dreams did I ever think I will go to America,” Rubina says.

Although the children appear to be living a dream come true, there has been controversy surrounding their involvement in the film and their attendance at the Oscars. Rubina lives in a one-room hut, and her parents reportedly rejected the studio’s original offer to fly her to L.A., suggesting that the money could be put to better use in her life.

Makers of the film have been accused of producing “poverty porn” and exploiting the children as well as creating the term “slumdog,” which some slum dwellers find offensive. Director Danny Boyle says he cast the real slum dwelling children, as opposed to professional actors to give the kids an escape from poverty. The studio has reportedly set up trust funds for the children when they graduate and has assisted them in trying to find new housing in Mumbai.

The children seem unaffected by any controversy surrounding the film, and appear only excited to be rubbing elbows with Hollywood’s elite on Sunday. “I’m going to go and take a lot of pictures and show them to people over here,” Rubina said. “I have to buy clothes and shoes for the award ceremony.” [Photos: Fox Searchlight; Source: Times Online]

Slumdog Wins Big At BAFTAs, Mickey Rourke Turns Air Blue

As predicted, it was all about Slumdog Millionaire at last night’s BAFTA awards. The British/Indian movie picked up seven awards, including the essential Best Sound gong. We jest of course — Best Film and Best Director were among its booty haul. Overall, the night was slick and glam and just this side of deeply uncontroversial. Thank heavens then, for Mickey Rourke, who on winning his Best Actor award for The Wrestler turned in a funny and foul-mouthed acceptance speech.

“I f****** up my career for 15 years … I’d like to thank my publicist for having the hardest job in showbusiness, telling me where to go, what to do, when to do it, what to eat, how to dress, what to f***,” he growled, going on to lech at co-star Marisa Tomei, saying, “It was very brave of her to take her clothes off all the time and I enjoyed looking at her.”

Kate Winslet won Best Actress for The Reader and managed to “gather” herself by almost hyperventilating in her efforts not to cry. Bravo! After the jump, the full list of winners on the night. [Photos: Getty Images]

Semi-Nude Photo Shoot Of Slumdog Actress Followed Up With Silly Question

In a new interview, Complex asked Slumdog Millionaire actress Freida Pinto if she’d ever do nudity or a sex scene. We think the magazine could have looked at its own photo shoot for the answer. The 23-year-old former model is wearing nothing but undies, an unbuttoned shirt and knee-high stockings. Sure, a sexy shoot is different from a full-on love scene, but this Bollywood beauty looks like she’s practically making love to the camera. Freida’s response is as follows: “I don’t think I’d have an issue [doing a love scene], but it all depends on the director — what kind of work he’s done in the past.” Yeah, that’s it. It’s all about art. [Source: Complex]
