Renesmee, Sookie, Magnus And More: 25 Supernatural Characters Who Dazzled Us In 2012

Anna Paquin, Joseph Morgan, Mackenzie Foy and Godfrey Gao

Around this time last year, we made this list a roundup of our favorite vampires of 2011 — though we named Bella Cullen as our fave, it was Damon Salvatore who ruled your hearts. This year, we took a look around at our favorite movies, TV shows and books and discovered that, while the bloodsuckers of True Blood, Twilight and The Vampire Diaries were still among our faves, they had some competition from other supes, too. There were the characters wielding magic for good or evil — Snow White and the Huntsman’s Queen Ravenna, Beautiful Creatures‘ Lena, The Mortal Instruments‘ Magnus, TVD’s Bonnie. We had a nice crop of werewolves — Teen Wolf’s Scott and Derek, Nightshade’s Calla, True Blood’s Alcide. And then, of course, there were gods, genetic mutations, time travelers and Shadowhunters. Whether they were on the page, the screen or both, these beautiful, dangerous, ever-seductive heroes and villains made us feel a little bit inadequate for being mere humans. But there’s one power we have that they don’t: the ability to vote on which of these 25 characters was our favorite of the year. Take a look at the gallery and then vote!

Will Beasts Of The Southern Wild‘s Quvenzhane Wallis Join These Past Child Oscar Nominees?

Beasts Of The Southern Wild's Quvenzhane Wallis Rumored For Oscar Noms

You know what the Academy Awards have been missing recently? Adorableness. That all might change if Beasts of The Southern Wild actress Quvenzhane Wallis gets nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. According to Hit Fix (as well as anyone who actually saw Beasts Of The Southern Wild) 9-year-old Wallis’ turn as the protagonist Hushpuppy could make her the youngest actress to win that particular award. Which got us thinking about all the child nominees and winners that came before. Why can’t the Oscars be entirely child actors and actresses? Ratings would go through the roof! Someone make a call to Bruce Vilanch, and in the meantime we’ll look back at kid nominees from Jodie Foster to Haley Joel Osment to Shirley Temple.

Anna Paquin And Stephen Moyer Welcome Their Twin Vamp-Babies!

Since that other vampire baby is currently dealing with her parents’ de facto trial separation (ohhhhh, can that be the plot of the fifth Twilight book? Which we assume will be called Around Brunch Time? That would certainly be a twist, wouldn’t it?), let’s all dedicate our supernatural squeeing to Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer‘s brand-new baby twins! “We can confirm that Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer recently welcomed their twins into the world,” the reps for the True Blood costars told Us Magazine this afternoon. “The babies were born a few weeks early, but are in good health and both Mom and Dad are overjoyed.” No word as to whether Anna Paquin had to be turned into one of the undead in order to avoid an untimely death during vampire childbirth, but hey, we all know how it works. It’s just undead science!

The no-doubt adorable vamp-babies are Paquin’s first children, while Moyer has two kids from previous relationships. Though the world has known about the incoming Paquin-Moyers since April, the names and sexes of the newborns have yet to be announced. Fortunately for Anna and Stephen, Sookie is technically a unisex name. Bill, not so much…

True Blood Season Finale Leaves Us With 10 Mostly Rhetorical Questions

Eric kills Russell in the True Blood season finale

I’m not the only one who had nightmares and delicious dreams about True Blood all night, right? Season five’s finale was intense. And it totally put to rest our doubts that Alan Ball and company could wrap up all of those crazy plots in one hour. Still, it also left my brain churning with all sorts of questions about what will happen in season six. Departing exec producer Ball answered a bunch of those questions over at TVLine.com last night, and HBO Go has a whole bonus scene that hints at a bit more, but it wouldn’t be True Blood if we could predict everything that’s coming up for Sookie, Eric, Jason and the rest. Here are 10 (mostly rhetorical) queries that kept me up for most of the night.

1. Could Eric get any hotter?
My heart stopped when he swooped in to save Sookie and the fairies from Russell — even though, in typical Eric fashion, he labeled it revenge for his family’s murder more than a heroic deed. He and Nora could have skipped town after that, but his better self drove him to venture back into the Authority to save the day. Swoon.

Jason and Eric on True Blood
2. Also, are we done with serious Eric and back to more of his playful side?
His interactions with Jason reminded us of why we fell for the dangerous vamp back when he was mostly a villain. Leave the dreary stuff for other vamps!

Snooki? Gisele? Tamera? Play Our Guess The Celebrity Baby Bump Game, Summer Edition!

Celebrity Baby Bumps

We begin staring at them, wondering if they’re merely the result of a big burrito lunch; then, soon enough, we marvel at their size in proportion to their petite carriers and placing bets on when they’ll pop — yes, we’re talking baby bumps. Particularly those sported by our favorite pregnant celebrities. It’s fascinating how some famous ladies, like Megan Fox and Gisele Bunchen, play coy for months, hiding behind cleverly draped dresses or simply ignoring questions when we know they’d never allow themselves to acquire food babies like the rest of us. Others, like Snooki, Tori Spelling and Vanessa Lachey, flaunt their bumps like crazy, posting pics on Twitter, posing in front of the paps in revealing outfits. To each her own!

But once again, we’d like to make their beautiful maternal bodies into a fun little game to while away your summer afternoon. Guess the celebrity baby bump! And don’t cheat by studying the thumbnails here; that’s just silly.

Happy Birthday, Anna Paquin! Check Out Her 30 Hottest (And Most Un-Sookie) Looks

Anna Paquin
Calling all True Blood fans: Today is our girl Anna Paquin‘s 30th birthday! She may not get to celebrate today as her vampire alter-ego, Sookie Stackhouse, but at least she’ll have hot hubby and co-star Stephen Moyer by her side. With twins on the way, we are sure that this glowing mom-to-be is in for a magical day sans booze, of course. We hope Moyer bought his pregnant wife a yummy cake!

In celebration of Anna turning the big 3-0, we’re taking a look back at her evolution through the years. Let’s not forget that long before she joined the vampire universe, the New Zealand native was stealing our hearts at the young age of 11 when she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her work in 1993′s The Piano. She has continued to lead an impressive career with franchises like X-Men under her acting belt and never ceases to amaze us with how many different hairdos she can rock. Check out how many looks this leading lady has experimented with and tell us which is your fave!

True Blood‘s 5 Best V Trips (That Are Less Traumatic Than Last Night’s)

Alexander Skarsgard and Lucy Griffiths on True Blood

I was bouncing up and down with Glee to see Bill riding piggyback on Eric as they joined Russell Edgington and the Council on their Lilith-blood trip through Bourbon Street. Weee! Another hilarious True Blood drug scene! And then, my hopes were quickly dashed as the scene in the karaoke party unfolded. No happy fun times there. In order to heal from those traumatic scenes today, I decided to look back at the most blissful of V trips and fairy-blood rolls from seasons past. I know drugs are bad, but hell, if I could join Eric on a bed in the middle of a snowy field, you wouldn’t be able to stop me.

5. Andy Bellefleur’s super strength (season 4)

Sheriff Bellefleur is probably the best example of why not to drink vampire blood (aside from Jason’s, er, difficulty in season 1). He was a pretty uncontrollable addict for a while there. But the above scene, when he displayed superhuman strength to lend Holly a hand with her furniture, might have been the moment the bumbling sheriff won the heart of Bon Temps’ friendly witch.

4. Jason and Amy romp through a field (season 1)

True Blood Remembers Its Horror Roots: The 8 Scariest Moments From “Let’s Boot And Rally”

Jesus' severed head on True Blood

Don’t get us wrong, we love the sex and twisted humor of True Blood. But every once in a while, the show gets so wrapped up in the task of squeezing 15 quirky plots and 50 blindingly beautiful actors into an hour of TV, it forgets another essential element of a show about vampires and other supernatural beings living in a swampy, remote town: the scary bits. To make up for it, apparently, Alan Ball and Co. made last night’s episode, with the deceptively innocuous title “Let’s Boot and Rally,” a full-on horror extravaganza. Here I’ll list the scariest bits, and at the end you can vote for the scene that kept you up all night.

1. Jesus’ head has a message. Poor Lafayette can’t catch a break. In answer to his prayers for help from the boyfriend he murdered, both Lafayette and his crazy mom are visited by the Dia de los Muertos version of Jesus (pictured above).

Rat bodies

2. Rats eat Russell Edgington’s leftovers in the spooky abandoned mental hospital. Love how Sookie fully acknowledges that they’re about to enact the oldest horror-movie scene in the book, but still, we were wimpering right along with Alcide’s employee Doug. Everyone else was just too jaded by life in Bon Temps to flinch.

Meanwhile, In Baby News: Anna Paquin Expects Twins, Matthew McConaughey’s Kids Are The Cutest

Anna Paquin Having Twins; Kings Of Leon Nathan Followill Having Baby; Matthew McConaughey's Kids Adorable

Twice as many babies! All the babies! Well, maybe not all of them, but today’s news definitely has more than we’d expected. Probably feeling the exact same way (or so we’d assume) is True Blood stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, who, two months after announcing their pregnancy, revealed that they’re expecting twins this fall. Also doubling up on baby news is Kings of Leon: drummer Nathan Followill, piggybacking on the arrival of brother and bandmate Caleb‘s brand-new daughter Dixie Pearl last week, announced his wife Jessie Baylin‘s pregnancy on Twitter. “I’m beyond excited/anxious. Life is beautiful,” Nathan tweeted ecstatically.

And since double babies seems to be a theme today (just as it should be a theme everyday), look at Matthew McConaughey‘s kids. Look at them. Scurrying around mom Camila Alves McConaughey‘s legs like little ducklings, Lexi and Vida McConaughey walked to their home in Tribeca today. It’s probably too much to hope that the McConaugheys could lead the Kings of Leon kids in some kind of adorable toddler bongo circle, but we refuse to give up hope. Anything’s possible…in our dreams! Everyone else dreams about celebrity baby bands, right? Alright, alright.

True Blood Is Naked-er Than Ever: An Episode In 8 Nudes And One Sweatsuit

Ryan Kwanten as Jason Stackhouse in True Blood

Oh, thank you, HBO. For bringing True Blood back so quickly for season five after a too short season four, and for proving time and time again that any story worth telling is a story worth telling with at least one fully nude character in the scene. Last night’s season premiere had, by our count seven actors naked or mostly naked — and the sheer variety of situations that called for them to shed their clothing was quite impressive. The only downside: For some reason Joe Manganiello’s Alcide remained clothed for his two scenes. Maybe, with Magic Mike coming in a few weeks, he feared over-exposure of his abs? Joe, let assure you that this is impossible. Anyway, we thought all those nekkid bodies would provide an excellent framework for discussing the episode:

1. Jason Stackhouse answers the door to Reverend Newland completely naked, for no apparent reason. It did nicely contrast how confident he is with his looks, even after everything that’s happened to him, with how completely vulnerable he was once the just-turned vampire Newland glamoured him into inviting him in and then confessed his love. Then, adorably, covered in what looks like his grandma’s blanket, he tells the former anti-vampire crusader: “This dog don’t bark that way.”

2. A female werewolf changes into her (naked) human form to confront Sam about killing her pack master Marcus. She’s just as threatening as when she’s covered in fur. Sam chooses this odd moment to be ignorant of werewolf politics and takes the blame for Alcide.

3. After flying off as an owl, Sam arrives at Luna’s house and, of course is naked as he meets Emma and Luna on their doorstep. Inappropriate!

We interrupt these nude scenes for one opposite of nude scene: Pam in a Walmart sweatsuit. For all her bravado, the fact that she was willing to don that thing to be buried alive and turn Tara says so much about her love for Eric.

Kristin Bauer van Straten as Pam on True Blood

4. How many times on this show have we seen Sookie take a shower? A lot of times. This time was a real tear-jerker as she flashed back to young Tara saving her from school bullies. Sookie says she’s tired of supes interfering in her life, but man, she is hazardous to all the mortals in her life, too. This was a good way to remind us that, though to us she may have been a whiny, treacherous and super-annoying character whose death we maybe hoped for a little too hard, she apparently once had some redeeming qualities to make her deserving of Sookie’s and Lafayette’s love.
