Good lord in Fugven! The wardrobe on Reese Witherspoon in Devil’s Own and Elizabeth Olsen in Very Good Girls has our eyebrows kissing the top of our heads. See, this is what can happen when they try to make the beautiful people look less beautiful: they transform a beautiful person…into a blazing hot mess. That paisley? How? What? Wha? No!
Now, fugly wardrobe is not to be confused with an actor or actress who purposely become less hot in order to transform into an actual preexisting human being (Charlize Theron in Monster, anyone?), like those Oscar nominees featured in our list of Scarily Accurate Historical Figure Portrayals. It is simply a costume that was carefully hand-selected by a film’s wardrobe department to depict a certain time period or personal style…and also happens to be very, very, very fugly. Reese and Elizabeth, you know what we’re talking about. Why does Dakota Fanning look relatively normal and Elizabeth have that monstrous shirt on? Okay, sorry. Let us do our breathing exercises for a second. You can’t see it, but we’re shaking our heads on your behalf, ladies, and on behalf of everyone else on our Fugliest Movie Wardrobe list:

This definitely is a Baz Luhrmann movie, is the first thought that crossed my mind when I saw this newly released trailer for The Great Gatsby. The clip’s only two and a half minutes but leaves your brain scrambling to process the series of lavish visuals thrown together. As the opening bars of The Throne’s “No Church in the Wild” plays and Tobey Maguire begins narrating, “New York, 1922. The tempo of the city had changed sharply. The buildings were higher, parties were bigger, the morals were looser …” the screen explodes into fireworks and scenes from a decadent party that are quite reminiscent of Baz’s Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet. He’s always so particular about his costumes and production, isn’t he? Carey Mulligan looks divine in this, Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio is pitch perfect, and here’s the piece de resistance — we didn’t know this until now, but the Bollywood legend, Amitabh Bachchan is playing the wolfish character of Meyer Wolfsheim, as you’ll see in the trailer. Apparently, Baz chased him down for the role. I’m still concerned about the chemistry between Leo and Carey as Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, but will reserve all judgement until I actually watch the film. Which I definitely will, as should you.

Is it our fault that we love a good sequin? No, right? Because nothing can make a better statement at an event than an embellished gown done right. Case in point, the Met Gala in New York last night was a gold rush with sparkling gowns everywhere! Whether it was Jessica Pare‘s sleek L’Wren Scott column (paired with Tiffany’s jewels and a Louboutin bag) or Kate Upton‘s molten metal Michael Kors, we were hooked. Right off the bat, we’re going to have to tell you who our favorite was, though. The honor goes to Jessica Alba who looked like a vintage dream with her hair done up in side-swept Marcel waves, and a gold Grecian, one-shouldered Michael Kors. That’s two winning looks for the designer already. Our second favorite has got to be newly married Carey Mulligan in a rather space-age looking Prada.
Other assorted lovelies in the metallic zone were Cameron Diaz in a minimal Stella McCartney, Scarlett Johansson in a wonderfully feminine, frothy Dolce & Gabbana and Leighton Meester in a delicate Marchesa with sheer hints. Lana del Rey was so dramatic with her dazzling Altuzarra gown and awesome black cape that we have to applaud her. Nina Dobrev hardly has bad days, does she? It’s also impossible to have a bad day when you’ve got a gorgeous face and body and are wearing a custom Donna Karen Atelier gown. Head to the gallery for all the high-octane glamor.

Our jaws dropped when we read this story on Us Weekly. According to them, everyone’s favorite Carey Mulligan is married to Marcus Mumford, her musician beau! The couple have been dating since early last year — they met at a Mumford & Sons gig in Nashville on February — and rumors of Mulligan and Mumford being engaged took off soon after. Turns out, he popped the question in August last year after just five months of dating, but they took their time with a nice long engagement. It’s being said that that they got hitched on a farm in Somerset, England, over the weekend. The thought of it makes us sigh already because this whole Somerset farm thing is truly dreamy. It’s the perfect spot for the ideal hipster wedding. The countryside is the spot now.
Apparently, they exchanged their “I do’s” in front of some hundred guests, who included their famous friends, like Sienna Miller, Colin Firth and Jake Gyllenhaal. That doesn’t even begin to satisfy us! We need more details — like the dress! Photographs! Something? But we are very happy for the newly married couple. Congratulations, you two!
