2012! The year of The (supposed) Apocalypse. The year of “Call Me Maybe” (which may be related to the Apocalypse, who really knows?). And, finally, the year of a few ill-fated celebrity hookups. Call them flings or fleeting romances or however else you hold on to your faith in true love, from Skrillex and Ellie Goulding to Russell Brand and Ginger Spice, these are the celebs who got together and then quickly broke apart this very year:
Love is a battlefield, and 2012 was not immune the heart’s harsh ways. Celebrity relationships had a tough go at things this year and saw a record number of sad splits (Amy Poehler and Will Arnett), shocking divorces (Heidi Klum and Seal) and close-call almost breakups (Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson). But 2012 also saw a few reconciliations (Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez), giving us hope for 2013. Browse through our gallery of the 20 biggest breakups of 2012 and tell us which split was the most devastating to watch.
Can anyone tell us what this is about? Ryan Murphy, the creator of Glee, posted this tweet, “The Wedding Of The Year” along with the photograph you see of Brittany (Heather Morris) and Sam (Chord Overstreet) above. Dressed suspiciously like a bride and groom. So much pretty in this picture, but that’s not the point! Wasn’t this supposed to be Rachel (Lea Michele) and Finn’s (Cory Monteith) wedding? At least that’s what we think was going to happen. This could also be a fake-out, though. Brittany and Sam could very well be a bridesmaid and groomsman. Or this could also be a fantasy sequence. Because Ryan would never give away such a huge plot twist before the actual episode. Because these two are a very, very unlikely couple and there’s no chance in hell that they would get married. Are we right or are we right? Brittany and Santana have broken up (boo!) but we don’t think they’d make a character ricochet so wildly. We also have a feeling that there are a lot of you that feel pretty strongly about this and probably have a lot of other theories about this photograph. We’re all out, so write in and let us know what you think, or if you know something we don’t!

Reverent footballer Tim Tebow is rumored to be dating most of Hollywood, and so is Taylor Swift. So it seemed like only a matter of time before the two would be somehow linked in a match made in slow-news-day hell. The two were first spotted together at a pre-Oscar party last weekend. “They were together for almost an hour,” a witness told Celebuzz. “She approached Tim and he looked more than happy to be talking with her.” And any elementary schooler knows that when a boy and a girl talk, it’s because they like each other.
But maybe there is something to the rumors after all. Apparently the two shared a meal an Italian restaurant on Monday. Maybe it’s love … or maybe it’s just love of spaghetti arrabiata. Who knows? It would definitely make sense that the two squeaky clean celebs could find some common ground.
But then again, Taylor does tend to have quite the active dating life. Wasn’t she supposed to be with Zac Efron, like, last week? She’s been linked to so many people that it’s hard to keep track! So as a public service, we’ve compiled a comprehensive history of Taylor Swift’s boyfriends, real and imagined. No need to thank us. Head on down to the gallery below to see the men behind all those breakup songs!

Young love can be so fickle. It’s all die-hard one day and die-now the next. Fortunately, the latter has not been quite so acrimonious with this fledgling, now-ex couple. Chord Overstreet and Emma Roberts have broken up after seeing each other for nine months. It’s not a dramatic split, says a source, revealing, “They’re just on two different paths in life. They just grew apart and decided to part ways.” That’s pretty zen of them, but it’s still sad. Having said that, the good news is that they’re both young and very hot. Things will be just fine for the two of them, just wait and see. Hotter and as-young things are just waiting around the corner.

Taylor Swift’s musical oeuvre would look a lot different if she just found some nice boy to settle down with. Luckily she hasn’t, and it’s the rest of us who are reaping all the benefits! “There’s just been this earth-shattering, not recent, but absolute crash-and-burn heartbreak,” the “Mine” singer admits in the latest issue of Vogue, “and that will turn out to be what the next album is about. The only way that I can feel better about myself — pull myself out of that awful pain of losing someone — is writing songs about it to get some sort of clarity.” Awwwww. Here, let these millions of dollars and thousands of screaming fans soothe your troubled soul, Taylor.
Back in 2010, there were plenty of rumors swirling about the male inspiration for Swift’s Speak Now album. While “Dear John” was allegedly about her relationship with John Mayer, “Back to December” was rumored to be about her ex Taylor Lautner. Seeing as how Swift allegedly canoodled with Jake Gyllenhaal, Garrett Hedlund and Chord Overstreet in the past year, which devastatingly handsome man do you think broke Taylor Swift’s heart this time … only to have her turn it into artistic greatness?
Just when we were finally getting over the Sam & Mercedes summer romance that never was (The hand holding! The secrecy! The hand holding!), it looks like Chord Overstreet’s Glee career is about to start back up again. Maybe. After reportedly turning down his reoccurring role for this season of Glee, TV Line reports that McKinley High’s resident Trouty Mouth is in talks to return in the show’s eighth episode, despite his character having moved with his family to a new city. Which gives the show approximately four episodes, with an average about 10 totally contradictory plot points each to set up Sam’s return … yeah, we think they can pull it off. The bigger question is, does the show still need him? Do you need Chord, to belt and to hand hold, so long as he and Amber Riley both chose to keep playing teenagers?
While it seems like most of your Glee favorites are safe from the axe, there’s one singing stud that won’t be roaming the halls of McKinley High for much longer. After much speculation, fan uproar, and back and forth negotiations, it looks like Chord Overstreet has declined a chance at a recurring role as Sam Evans on the hit series. It’s rumored that the 22 year old star is unhappy that newcomer Darren Criss is getting promoted to series regular this fall, while his option was not picked. He would have to wait until the middle of the season for his chance to get the bump. Apparently this wasn’t a firm enough offer and he has decided to walk.
“We wanted him back because we like Chord personally and had some good stories planned for him and with Mercedes [Amber Riley],” series producer and co-creator Brad Falchuk told a crowd at Comic-Con. “He decided he would have opportunities elsewhere that he would like to pursue, and we can’t force him to work. We told him to go with God.” It looks like things are up in the air for his onscreen flame as well. Amber Riley recently told E! Online that she might be leaving the series as well. “I may not be coming back for a fourth season. Who knows? Whatever happens this third season is what happens, and I think everybody’s OK with it…I love my job to pieces, but when it’s time to go, it’s time to go and, hopefully, there are greater things on the horizon.”
