Any Smash fan who spent two seasons following the progress of a fictional musical about Marilyn Monroe has to wonder: What the hell happened to Debra Messing‘s scarves? Famously reviled by TV fans, the show cut down on the cozy accessory in season two, but sadly never made it to a third. In hopes of cracking a Hollywood mystery for the ages, VH1 spoke to Will Chase, who played Michael Swift, the on-screen fling to Messing’s Julia Houston. Read more…

Sometimes, when the weather gets hot, a bad relationship starts itching at you like a million grains of sand in your bathing suit. At least we’re assuming that’s what happens, seeing as how the summer months have been rife with celeb break-ups this year. From old married like Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes to the most casual of booty calls like Kris Humphries and Myla Sinanaj, at least all these painful break-ups will bear delicious new relationships in the fall. Or a few Twitter meltdowns. Either way, you will survive, celebrity dumpees!
Oh man, this has hit plenty of people pretty hard. Amazing screenwriter, director, author and three-time Oscar winner Nora Ephron died of leukemia last night at 71. Where would movie history be without classics like Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally and You’ve Got Mail? Not only was she a genius in the romantic-comedy genre, but she could also write a hell of a drama— Silkwood. She could write beautifully, period. Her essay collection I Feel Bad About My Neck is also evidence of that.
Considering her career spanned decades, she also ended up inspiring many generations of stars, and made some very close friends in the business, along the way. They’re all grieving over her sudden, sad passing. Close pal, Meryl Streep, told the New York Times, “You could call on her for anything: doctors, restaurants, recipes, speeches, or just a few jokes, and we all did it, constantly. She was an expert in all the departments of living well.” There have also been a series of tweets from a diverse selection of celebrities, all expressing their sorrow. Steve Martin wrote, “She was the one you wanted to read, to listen to, to be in the company of. Nora Ephron. Incomparable wit; delightful friend. Sadness reigns.” One of the younger celebrities, inspired by her career, Kaley Cuoco has tweeted, “RIP Nora Ephron Loved her work Loved her direction Loved her writing Blessings and thoughts to her family.”
We have a selection of tweets after the jump from people like Bette Midler, Jessica Biel, Debra Messing, Russell Simmons and Sarah Silverman. Justin Timberlake‘s tweet is right below. Our sincere condolences go out to her family and friends. She sounded like one incredible lady.
Over six months after announcing her separation, TMZ reports that Debra Messing has finally filed for divorce from husband of almost 12 years Daniel Zelman. The Smash actress cited “irreconcilable differences” in the documents her lawyer Neal Hersh submitted to L.A. County Superior Court, in addition to asking for joint custody and spousal and child support. “I think the institution of marriage is a noble thing. I think the idea of a partner for life is incredibly romantic. But now we’re living to 100. A hundred years ago, people were dying at age 37. Til death do us part was a much different deal,” Messing told Ladies Home Journal last month. Hmmm, if your spouse is telling Ladies Home Journal your marriage only would have worked if she’d died at 37…yeah, probably time to throw in the towel.
While the couple was reportedly living together after their split for the sake of their son, other reports claimed Debra was allegedly on the rebound in real life with her on-screen lover Will Chase, a turn of events we imagine would make her unconventional living situation…more than a little awkward. “It’s a very long time,” Debra added in her LHJ interview. “And I am at peace with the journey we’ve had. I feel like the 20 years we had together has been a huge success. And despite the fact that everything is changing, I think everyone is thriving.” Good luck on your next 20 year marriage, Debra! At this rate you can fit it…what, approximately three more?

Some major television star power showed up at the NBC Upfront preview party in New York on Monday, representing a fair amount of our favorite shows and new ones we can’t wait to see. One of those would be Parks and Recreation and the shows lead, Amy Poehler looked like a stone cold fox in a Nicole Miller dress, House of Lavande jewelry and an All Saints leather jacket. Other funny ladies, Up All Night co-stars Maya Rudolph and Christina Applegate also represented. Eva Longoria was glam in a deep red Alberta Ferretti dress with Brian Atwood pumps. She probably made sure not to stand right next to Jenny McCarthy, whose sexy fuchsia shift would have clashed horribly next to it!
Other glam ladies included Law & Order: SVU‘s Mariska Hargitay wearing a white Victoria Beckham dress. She happily posed with co-stars Ice-T and Kelli Giddish. Katharine McPhee wore a floral Dolce & Gabbana dress, repp’ing Smash. Jamie-Lynn Sigler looked fine in a red Nonoo jumpsuit and posed with her Guys With Kids producer Jimmy Fallon. That was just the tip of the iceberg at this Upfront, so head on to the gallery for the whole deal. Of course, the Fox Upfront happened on the same day in the same city, and we know that Britney Spears and Demi Lovato were officially presented as the newest judges on The X Factor there. Did the rest of that network’s star power match up? Click over to our Fox gallery and compare!

I’m sure almost every night in New York and Los Angeles, there is a room that contains handfuls of celebrities, bankers and society ladies clinking glasses and pledging thousands to some cause or another. But, though I have been to a whole lot of those kinds of soirees, I feel like the one I went to last night, a benefit for the Joyful Heart Foundation at Cipriani Wall Street in NYC, is a little bit different from the others. I can’t imagine there are many other events where you would see Ice-T and Coco meet wide-eyed teenagers, Debra Messing loudly promising to kiss a stranger, Samantha Ronson teaching a Christie’s auctioneer how to hold a mic, and Hilary Swank dancing in her seat as Harry Connick Jr. improvised lyrics in praise of Mariska Hargitay. (I mean, it’s no Channing Tatum grinding with Elton John, but still.) And in-between it all we are moved to tears by stories of women surviving rape and abuse, and others fighting for a future where “Special Victims Unit” sounds like a quaint relic of the past on par with typewriters and scullery maids.
Variations of this scene have been going down for years, since Law & Order: SVU star Hargitay decided to make it her mission to heal the kind of victims she’d been helping onscreen as Det. Olivia Benson. And I can tell you from experience (and full disclosure, one of my BFFs works for Joyful Heart) that this isn’t some token cause for the actress. She throws herself into it, and brings her very famous friends along with her.
Is it our fault that we love a good sequin? No, right? Because nothing can make a better statement at an event than an embellished gown done right. Case in point, the Met Gala in New York last night was a gold rush with sparkling gowns everywhere! Whether it was Jessica Pare‘s sleek L’Wren Scott column (paired with Tiffany’s jewels and a Louboutin bag) or Kate Upton‘s molten metal Michael Kors, we were hooked. Right off the bat, we’re going to have to tell you who our favorite was, though. The honor goes to Jessica Alba who looked like a vintage dream with her hair done up in side-swept Marcel waves, and a gold Grecian, one-shouldered Michael Kors. That’s two winning looks for the designer already. Our second favorite has got to be newly married Carey Mulligan in a rather space-age looking Prada.
Other assorted lovelies in the metallic zone were Cameron Diaz in a minimal Stella McCartney, Scarlett Johansson in a wonderfully feminine, frothy Dolce & Gabbana and Leighton Meester in a delicate Marchesa with sheer hints. Lana del Rey was so dramatic with her dazzling Altuzarra gown and awesome black cape that we have to applaud her. Nina Dobrev hardly has bad days, does she? It’s also impossible to have a bad day when you’ve got a gorgeous face and body and are wearing a custom Donna Karen Atelier gown. Head to the gallery for all the high-octane glamor.
