As we gear up for the release of Rock of Ages this week, we’ve been looking back at some of the trends the nostalgic musical so lovingly celebrates, like Malin Akerman’s sexy rocker-chick look and Mary J. Blige’s flashy jumpsuits. More than any one fashion, the movie reminds us of one big trend the late ’80s and early ’90s were famous for: the groupie. Not just the girls who flashed their goods from the audience or hung around by the tour buses, either — there were plenty of high-profile ladies who were eager for a backstage pass. And some of them got a lot more than a private concert in the bargain.
Here they are — our picks for the absolute ugliest, WTF-iest and just way off outfits at tonight’s Costume Institute Gala. The annual event — held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and hosted by Vogue and Anna Wintour — is arguably one of fashion’s biggest nights, and it always amazes us that so many people get it SO.WRONG. Kirsten Dunst! Riri! These are the gals we look to for inspiration, but their outfits, hair and shoes just blahhhh-ed tonight. Christina Hendricks normally wins every time she walks the carpet, but this outfit looks like something she dug out of a dumpster and smeared on her body. Naomi Campbell should throw her rhinestone-covered Blackberry at herself for this abysmal showing (Do we spy a scrunchie?!), Ashley Olsen‘s arms are sleeved in 100% fail and Freida Pinto is going to have to nail it on every red carpet for the rest of the year to make us forgive and forget this hipster douche tie monstrosity.
It would appear that anyone who has ever worn clothes was in attendance at the Women’s Wear Daily 100 Anniversary Gala last night. Fashionistas like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Iman, Anna Wintour, and Michael Kors were there, both Top Chef hosts, Padma Lakshmi and Katie Lee, were there (was that weird?), and then there were the total randos: Henry Kissinger, Jessica Szohr, Alex McCord. Seriously, elbow combinations you never dreamed of were rubbing last night. The one thing they had in common though was that everyone looked amazing. Check out our gallery to see what we mean.
While fashion-forward fellows like Jon Bon Jovi and James Franco attended last night’s 26th Annual Night Of Stars in NYC, we couldn’t help but notice all the famous ladies flying solo for Fashion Group International’s prestigous award ceremony. Emmy Rossum was there without Adam Duritz, Gwen Stefani without Gavin Rossdale, and even Iman left David Bowie at home. Dita Von Teese and Evan Rachel Wood—Marilyn Manson‘s ex-wife and the then-teeanger he left her for—managed to hit the carpet without making it any redder. See who else showed up in the gallery below.
Yesterday was one of the windiest NYC has seen in a while, sending the dresses at The American Ballet Theatre’s Fall Gala 2009 flying like tiles off the top of a Brooklyn brownstone. Among the victims were Gossip Girl‘s Joanna Garcia, Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Emmy Rossum, though the dreads of Rossum’s rebound rocker, Counting Crows singer Adam Duritz, paid the breeze no mind. Watch the hair fly in the gallery below.
