Does Drew Barrymore think that she has it all? Did Lindsay Lohan split up with her boyfriend already? And what do you think should be Logan Lerman‘s new catchphrase? All this in today’s First Dibs. Read more…
The Percy Jackson series of fantasy novels is one of the most popular YA series of the last decade. After the monster success of the Twilight franchise, Hollywood went in search of the next big franchise that they could cultivate from the YA well. Some of tanked (*cough* Beautiful Creatures *cough), but the first Percy film, 2010’s Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, did well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel. Thanks to our friends over at MTV Movies, we’re excited to share the new trailer for the sequel, Percy Jackson And The Sea Of Monsters, with you this morning.
As we were fanning ourselves while watching Nicholas Hoult play a weirdly hot zombie in Warm Bodies, we had to come to terms with the fact that this strapping young actor was the adorable young-un who helped Hugh Grant get the girl in About a Boy 10 years ago. Wow, we thought, what a pleasant surprise to see these cute child stars make good … and yummy. But really, we shouldn’t be that surprised. As we started combing back through the boy stars of the early 2000s, we discovered a nice number of them had made this transition quite nicely. From big movie names like Daniel Radcliffe and Bow Wow to TV stars like Shia LaBeouf and Zac Efron, these kids are making good — and are now totally legal and not at all creepy to stare at. Enjoy 15 of them in the gallery below:
From Emma Stone and Carey Mulligan to Jennifer Lawrence, Kristen Stewart and Rooney Mara, there’s an ever-expanding group of women on the cusp of adulthood who have already landed firmly on the big screen’s A-list. And while we’re all about girl power, we’ve been wondering: Where the heck are their male contemporaries? Surely the next generation of Ben Afflecks and Bradley Coopers are out there, just waiting to be mentioned on a list like this! Look no further, friends — we’ve got our eye on 13 future big-screen big deals, and have rounded them up for your analysis below. Some, like Robert Sheehan, Nick Hoult and Max Irons are part of the YA book-to-movie phenomenon. Others, like Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller, are recent Sundance darlings. While their roles may be vastly different, they’re bonded by incredible talent (and, you know, their good looks don’t hurt anything either).
Check out their deets below so you can say you knew them when.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one of our favorite movies of the year, chock full of teen angst, great music and stellar performances from the young cast. We dug deep into the photo archives and grabbed some ridiculously adorable photos of the Perks crew from when they were at their very youngest. Yes, you’ve got Logan Lerman, Ezra Miller and the most precious and wee Emma Watson. But there are more amazing discoveries to be made, like Mae Whitman‘s child star past and Paul Rudd‘s inability to age.
Dig in below, and be sure to catch Perks in the theater — it opens in L.A. and NYC today.
In The Perks of Being a Wallflower, an introverted boy named Charlie survives the hardships of high school by finding his place in a group of misfits. The magic of Stephen Chbosky’s novel and movie is that the warmth and spirit of these friends leaps off the page, making you believe in their relationships and feel like you too are a part of their quirky group. Miraculously, the same thing happens in Chbosky’s movie — and we think that’s due to his intuitive casting process which gathered a group of actors who became fast friends on the set in Pittsburgh.
“We sort of all fell in love with each other immediately and we still are to this day,” Mae Whitman, who plays Mary Elizabeth, told VH1 Celebrity. “I mean we spent every night together hanging out in hotel rooms and playing music and being loud and crazy. It was really like an experience of a lifetime for me. It was really amazing.”
Ezra Miller (Patrick) also told us about those afterparties. “The best times for me were in these stuffy hotel rooms where all of us would amass nightly and just play music and kind of lose ourselves in sound and in our relationships with one another,” he recalled.
That kind of instant friendship seems to be rooted in the fact that these were all people Chbosky himself clicked with right away. “We had auditioned two people for [Charlie], and [Logan Lerman] was the second one. Five seconds into the audition, and I knew he was the kid,” he told us. “I knew these characters so well, and I knew them from the inside out, far more than what I thought they looked like. When I sat down with Emma in NY I knew I met a kindred spirit and I knew I had Sam. And when I did the callback with Ezra over Skype, even though it was over Skype, I just knew I’d found Patrick. Based on this new Perks of Being a Wallflower clip, we’d say Charlie really lucked out: validated for his coolness, toasted by a crop of new friends, welcomed by a gorgeous Emma Watson. If this movie was based on our life, we’d get into a fight with our outcast friends about being four hours late to pick us up at Dairy Queen, and then they’d throw our shoes in the ditch. Haha, just kidding! It would be a Dunkin’ Donuts. Good thing everyone we’ve talked to so far absolutely loves Perks, or we’d be downright consumed by jealousy.
When it comes to wanting more awesome outcast friends, though, we of course mean our own personal Patrick, as portrayed by the illimitable Ezra Miller. “Ezra’s a force of nature. He is so free and he is generous and he is so nice, and we, God did we luck out because I had Emma and Logan [Lerman] really early on, I knew I had Sam and Charlie covered,” Perks director Stephen Chbosky told MTV, who debuted the clip yesterday. “Patrick was the wild card, we auditioned a lot of people, some really good people, but ultimately, he was the only choice for that part. And he brought so much life and freedom to the role, just I count my lucky stars. I cannot believe it.” Man, why can’t Patrick tell us, “You see things and you understand. You’re a wallflower”? Plus, Charlie gets to drink some kind of milkshake? Come on. Come on.
We just realized — there’s just a little over a month to go until Perks of Being a Wallflower comes out (in select theaters, on September 21). Will the film end up being a cult classic like the novel it’s been adapted from? Only time will tell, but this new lot of photographs from Summit Entertainment, makes us want to grab some caramel popcorn and watch it now. That’s a good sign. More than anything, these photographs articulate everything we know of the movie’s characters already. Who wouldn’t want to be tight with Emma Watson‘s Sam? Even though the photograph above looks a tad Titanic-esque. The trailer for Perks of Being a Wallflower was released two months ago, and it had all the signs of turning into the go-to film this fall. Epic shots, the trials and tribulations of growing up, the angst of teen romance … what’s not to love? More than anything, Emma, along with Logan Lerman‘s Charlie and Ezra Miller‘s Patrick have real chemistry together as an ensemble. Take a look at the gallery below of all the latest photographs to see what we’re talking about.
FYI, this has been the second time the movie’s been in the news this week. The first was because of the Out September cover featuring Miller, Lerman and Johnny Simmons (who portrays Brad) where Ezra comes out as “queer” saying, “I’m queer. I have a lot of really wonderful friends who are of very different sexes and genders. I am very much in love with no one in particular. I’ve been trying to figure out relationships, you know? I don’t know if it’s responsible for kids of my age to be so aggressively pursuing monogamous binds, because I don’t think we’re ready for them …” It’s a really lovely piece that weaves together the making of the film, with the lives of the three actors, so have a read. But first … to the gallery!
Oh, our noses! Look, we can’t stop Vince Vaughn from executive producing a Brady Bunch reboot. Seeing as how 21 Jump Street and 90210 were already taken, it was only a matter of time before someone reached even further back into the annals of television and noodled with the classic ’70s blended-family sitcom. According to Deadline, Vaughn’s update revolves around the conceit that the original show’s “youngest son Bobby Brady is divorced and remarried to a woman who also has first-marriage kids and the couple have their own child together.” There hasn’t been any casting news as of yet, which means there is still time for Vince Vaughn to read this post and act accordingly. If we’re going to do this, dude, then let’s do this right! By including actors and actresses like…
Based on the trailer that premiered during tonight’s MTV Movie Awards, the biggest perk of being a wallflower would be getting to hang out with Emma Watson and her perfect pixie cut. That prom scene! We swooned. We squeed. Joined by costars Ezra Miller and LoganLerman, Watson sparkles as new friend/possibly requited crush Sam to Lerman’s titular wallflower. “And in this moment, I swear we were infinite,” his Charlie wonders aloud from the back of a pickup. Um, seriously. Never has driving into Pittsburgh looked so epic!
But we’re not just into the film for Emma’s crop, though that is 60% to 70% of why we love this trailer. We’re also into the sweet little nerdling romance! “Why do I and everyone I love pick people who treat us like we’re nothing?” Watson’s Sam wonders. “We accept the love we think we deserve,” Charlie tells her. Yup, we are already ready to tear up. “You see things and you understand. You’re a wallflower,” Miller’s Patrick proclaims. Sadly, all you wallflowers are going to have to wait until September 14 to see Emma in action, but boy, is our journal going to hear about this!
