Around this time last year, we made this list a roundup of our favorite vampires of 2011 — though we named Bella Cullen as our fave, it was Damon Salvatore who ruled your hearts. This year, we took a look around at our favorite movies, TV shows and books and discovered that, while the bloodsuckers of True Blood, Twilight and The Vampire Diaries were still among our faves, they had some competition from other supes, too. There were the characters wielding magic for good or evil — Snow White and the Huntsman’s Queen Ravenna, Beautiful Creatures‘ Lena, The Mortal Instruments‘ Magnus, TVD’s Bonnie. We had a nice crop of werewolves — Teen Wolf’s Scott and Derek, Nightshade’s Calla, True Blood’s Alcide. And then, of course, there were gods, genetic mutations, time travelers and Shadowhunters. Whether they were on the page, the screen or both, these beautiful, dangerous, ever-seductive heroes and villains made us feel a little bit inadequate for being mere humans. But there’s one power we have that they don’t: the ability to vote on which of these 25 characters was our favorite of the year. Take a look at the gallery and then vote!

The Twilight stars look particularly yearbook-y in this photo from Comic-Con.
Even the most amateur of movie biz followers knows that stars of mega-franchise movies face a huge hurdle when it comes to finding work later But then again, for every Elijah Wood or Mark Hamill, there’s an Emma Watson or Harrison Ford. Which category will the Twilight cast fall into? We’re taking a close look at all the movies our favorite vampires and werewolves have lined up here, and while we were a bit surprised to see who’s dance card is all filled up and whose IMDb page is looking a little blank at the moment, we’re also choosing to see those empty calendars as great opportunities. Especially now that casting directors must be noting all the cash that Breaking Dawn – Part 2 brought in over the weekend. In the meantime, here’s what we’re looking forward to from the cast next:
Robert Pattinson: Rob seems hellbent on defying any and every box you might want to place him in, post Twilight, so his range of projects is vast. In pre-production, he’s got Mission: Blacklist, in which he’ll play a military interrogator who helped find Saddam Hussein; Hold On to Me, in which he’ll play the love interest of Carey Mulligan, who’s plotting to kidnap the town’s richest guy; The Rover, about car thieves in the Australian Outback; and Queen of the Desert, about early-20th-century archaelogist Gertrude Bell (played by Naomi Watts). Then it looks like he’ll be re-teaming with Cosmopolis helmer David Cronenberg for something called Maps to the Stars. We’re breathless after just summarizing all that.
Kristen Stewart: By contrast, KStew found herself telling E!, “I’m kinda desperate to get a job right now,” on the BD2 black carpet last week. After the release of On the Road in December, she’s got nothing official on her plate. But there are three possible flicks for her: Snow White and the Huntsman 2, which she might star in after all, despite rumors the movie was going in a different direction. Also, there’s Focus, the heist movie starring Ben Affleck. She’s also said to be in the running for Lie Down in Darkness, based on a novel by William Styron about a seriously screwed up family living in 1950s Virginia. On the other hand, Kristen had a very busy 2011, so we can also picture her taking a bit of a break — maybe perfecting her sax skills — and then making something huge a little later down the line.
Taylor Lautner: We think the disappointing box office take of Abduction may have caused Taylor (or his people) to opt for a breather before grabbing all the offers coming his way. We think his decision to make the comedy Grown Ups 2 his next movie is brilliant, though. We’ve seen in the Twilight movies and a number of little videos along the way that he’s got comedic chops to go with those abs. But then he’ll use those abs again in Tracer, which is, no joke, a parkour movie.
We already know that Kristen Stewart is a stone cold fox in Zuhair Murad at the Breaking Dawn – Part 2 premiere in L.A. tonight. But there’s a lot more best-dressed action going on, on the black carpet as well. Kristen’s boyfriend, Robert Pattinson, for instance, is pulling off a bottle green Gucci suit. We kid you not. Also wearing the shade is a dark haired Dakota Fanning in an emerald Elie Saab, that’s lovely on her. Bella Thorne is in the same color too, wearing a mullet dress with a ruffled hem, paired with a black belt and pumps. Saoirse Ronan is ethereal in a white Simone Rocha dress and brogues, and the frock has this interesting broderie anglaise-esque hem on it. Christian Serratos is red-hot in a fire engine Zac Posen gown, YSL shoes, Judith Leiber clutch and Kisshy jewelry and is totally channeling an old Hollywood screen siren. Kiernan Shipka is chic in a navy frock with raspberry pumps and we want the whole damn thing. As we always do because she has the best stylist in the whole world who we want to be friends with. But … who really stole the show is Amadou Ly — Henri from the French coven — who came attired in full tribal gear. A nod to his Senegalese heritage? Either way, we love it! Check out all our picks in the gallery below and tell us if you agree!

If you think a lady needs to be able to vote or buy alcohol in order to kill it on the red carpet, you are of course mistaken. While there’s no doubt that Kristen Stewart slayed at tonight’s Breaking Dawn Part 2 premiere, what with her auburn tendrils and nude gown, the girls who really brought the fashion heat were all years away from being able to legally operate a motor vehicle. For our money, Hunger Games‘ Amandla Stenberg was the strongest contender among the middle school set, pairing her florescent patterned dress with jelly sandals. Oh, how those sandals bring us back. Breaking Dawn‘s Mackenzie Foy and Mad Men‘s Kiernan Shipka also looked equally put together and adorable. So is the ultimate red carpet secret having a mom to fix your hair and rub dirt off your face before you leave the house? We’re starting to suspect the answer is…yes.
For some of you, the pinnacle of all things Twilight was the honeymoon scene in Breaking Dawn – Part 1. Personally, I’ve been dying for the ultimate Cullen-Volturi showdown since, oh, August 2008. It sounds like the folks behind the film were looking forward to it too. In an interview with MTV News, director Bill Condon gave a few details about some of the effects that they’re employing to illustrate the vampires’ various supernatural abilities. And we thought we couldn’t be more excited for this movie.
“Oh man, there are so many [effects] that are so beautiful,” he said. “I love the way, it’s very creepy, but I love the way that Alec’s mist looks. He has that mist that can make you blind, deaf and dumb, so that’s looking really good. It feels like the best Hammer [horror] movie you’ve ever seen. It’s a little different [type of mist] and sort of has tentacles that can get inside you and all that stuff.”
Ooh, that does sound creepy. So does the effect their using to show of Renesmee’s (Mackenzie Foy) special skill. “Her power, she touches somebody and she can show them what’s in her head and that you develop. There are some visual things, but a lot of that is done through Carter Burwell’s score, but then just recently in the mixing Dane Davis, who is a brilliant sound designer, he did The Matrix and so many other movies, he had her just speak and read poetry and things like that, and he’s turned it into hundreds of tracks. You don’t actually hear words but it becomes the chattering of her [voice], it’s a very abstract effect that I’ve never heard before. It’s really cool.”
Christmas has come early this year, and we’re obviously on the good list. Not only did we get a brand new teaser trailer for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, last week, but now, we’ve also some fantastic stills to gawk at. Of course, these happen to be the same ones that Entertainment Weekly got the exclusive on a week earlier, but now that we have our own, we can walk you through them in the gallery below. We’re already in love with the photograph you see above, of the family Cullen (Kristen Stewart, Mackenzie Foy and Robert Pattinson) and Jacob (Taylor Lautner). Little Renesmee features quite a bit in these new photographs. There’s also a lovely one of her sharing a lighthearted moment with Jacob, and one incredibly intense one with her mother, Bella. Kristen makes for a really hot vampire, FYI. More importantly, we get our first real look at the covens. There’s one with Renesmee talking to Senna (Tracey Heggins) and Zafrina (Judith Shekoni) of the Amazon tribes, as well as one of Kate (Casey Labow) and Tanya (Myanna Buring) of the Denali coven. There’s even one of Eleazar (Christian Camargo) and Carmen (Mia Maestro.) You won’t stop giggling when you see the still of the famous arm wrestling scene between Emmett (Kellan Lutz) and Bella, as well. Rounding up the lot is a pretty menacing one of the Volturi with Jane (Dakota Fanning) and Alec (Cameron Bright) as they arrive in Forks. Now, enough talking, and more looking. To the gallery!

We kind of feel like the Volturi right now, we’ve been staring so intently at this photo (which, btw you can only see in full if you like EW.com on Facebook, so go do that now and then come back and talk to us again). After complaining that the first images and then the character posters of Edward, Bella and Jacob were kind of just more of the same thing we’ve seen for years from the Twilight gang, it is such a big deal to get this tiny glimpse of Mackenzie Foy as Renesmee. And even though we can see only half of her face, peeking out from behind her awesome vampire mama, we’re pretty confident she looks exactly like Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s hypothetical offspring. Another thing we love about this photo is how much Kristen looks like a superheroine glaring at us from the cover of a YA novel — her stance, the leather jacket, those hot leggings and lace-up boots, that perfectly tousled hair all say, “I am not the fragile, human Bella you may remember, so don’t touch my baby!”
UPDATE: And here is a much better look at the family:
Okay guys, we’re friends so I feel like I can be honest with you and tell you that I was maybe most nervous to interview Mackenzie Foy at the Breaking Dawn premiere. When her publicist brought her over to me I squealed. Audibly. And I am a grown woman.
Mackenzie, who plays the Twilight golden child Renesmee, was an absolute delight to talk to. She was so precocious and kind and thoughtful in her answers, she kind of reminded me of another Twilight actress who started out in the biz as a kid and is cool and beautiful with great hair. (It should be obvs who I am talking about.) She filled me in on the on-set swear jar, Rob’s goofy ways, what it’s like playing a half-vampire and how the screaming fans make her feel. She also told us that Rob, Kristen and the Breaking Dawn cast feel “like family” to her.
You totally get why I squealed, right?
