Merkin Christmas, everybody, and a Happy Pube Year! Have we discussed how much we truly love merkins? You know what we always say: if a movie doesn’t require actors to wear a tiny pubic wig, then it’s not worth watching. Luckily, it sounds like the upcoming film The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo has the request crotch costuming to make it one of our favorites.
Said the film’s star Rooney Mara to Metro, “There was a lot of discussion that went into my merkin for the movie, because I was naked quite a lot. And I don’t think a lot of people will notice all of the attention that went into that. But there was a lot of discussions around that.” Ah, but what of Daniel Craig‘s merkin? We would like to have a discussion about that! Mara continued, “Well, you know, in the book she’s meant to have strawberry-blonde hair originally and she dyes it, so we had a special merkin made that was, you know, strawberry-blonde so that it would fit.” We can all breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the soon-to-be-released thriller is so committed to authenticity. Then take a few more breaths as we gasp in delight at other celebrity merkin experiences:
Evan Rachel Wood, Mildred Pierce: “I looked at Kate and she was like, ‘You’ve got to do it. Trust me, it’s so brave. Put a merkin on and you’ll be fine,'” Wood said, reminiscing about her nude scene in the HBO miniseries. “Let’s just say, I had to wear a wig because it was in the 30s, and everything had to look like it was in the 30s.”
Kate Winslet, The Reader: “I had to grow the hair down there. But because of years of waxing, as all of us girls know, it doesn’t come back quite the way it used to,” Winslet remarked about her 2008 Oscar-winning role. “They even made me a merkin — a wig — because they were so concerned that I might not be able to grow enough.”
Since everyone and their mother (including us and our mothers) are shamefully giggling behind their hands this week about Courteney Cox Arquette’s husband and his emotional melt-down, it’s nice to see his sister Patricia Arquette defending David Arquette. Now, did she have to do it by losing her marbles on the red carpet? We’ll let the courts decide.
While with her bro at Wednesday’s ONEXONE Foundation Gala event in New York, Patricia hulked out on a group of reporters asking questions about the Cox-Arquette situation. Patricia snarled, “”How are you doing? How is your kid doing? Have you ever had anything happen in your life? What’s the worst thing that you’ve ever had happen to you? Do you ever masturbate? Have you ever had an abortion? I mean, can you imagine these kind of questions? Can you imagine? Can you imagine? It’s not alright! It’s not alright!” Patricia, don’t give David any more ideas! He was probably standing behind her the whole time, furiously taking notes so he knows what embarrassing things to bring up in public.
And is it really “not alright” for us to ask questions about Arquette’s very public, very gruesome separation saga? Normally we would (reluctantly) agree with Patty, despite our own burning, evil love of celeb gossip. However, if someone willfully goes to a shock jock and dishes on the intimate details of their emotional and sexual life in a totally cray-cray manner? Sorry: they clearly want the public to know. And if that person does it more than once? On HOWARD STERN? At this rate David is eventually going to get his own program where he just read’s Courteney’s old tax returns out loud and sobs. We won’t even going to pretend we wouldn’t TIVO that.
Happy Passover! Today Jews around the world celebrate God “passing over” the houses of the Jews when he killed the first born in Egypt. In honor of this special day, we are republishing our fabulous list of the top Jewish Hollywood Beauties. Maybe you can’t have leavened bread, but there are plenty of hot buns in this gallery to make up for it! L’Chaim!
Patricia Arquette and Robin Wright (Penn) made their respective big screen breakthroughs in 1987’s Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Princess Bride. Arquette married and divorced actors Nicolas Cage and Thomas Jane in the twenty plus years since, while Wright almost divorced Sean Penn in 2007. Both actresses were born on April 8th.
