While you may think of Rooney Mara as the damaged, vengeful Lisbeth Salander from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, we see a very different, tender side of the actress in her new movie Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, which opens in select theaters this weekend. In particular, she has a very sweet scene in which she sings to her onscreen 4-year-old daughter. After seeing her take the stage with the Black Lips at last year’s Austin City Limits (for an upcoming Terrence Malick movie), we wondered if she has a music career waiting on the back burner. Today is Girl With The Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara’s birthday, so we figured now was as good a time as any to pit her against older sister Kate in a head-to-head battle to determine, once and for all, WHO IS THE BEST MARA?!?!? Read more…
We’ve already begun squealing about the return of Jim Carrey in The Incredible Burt Wonderstone after the actor’s virtually acting-free 2012…and, um, those other years before that. That’s when we realized that a ton of our favorite celebs will be all over our big and small screens in 2013 (not to mention our internets, with all their interviews and such) after a dry spell. For example, according to IMDb, this year Carrie star Chloe Moretz and Oz the Great and Powerful lead James Franco return in seven and six film projects respectively. Natalie Portman and Rooney Mara have both been off the scene since 2010’s Black Swan and 2011’s Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. And Michael Cera? More Arrested Development means more sweet, sweet George Michael for your eyeballs.
Of course, some of these celebs seemed like they never left the limelight (see also: James Franco). Did you know Melissa McCarthy was in only one film in 2012? In Vanessa Hudgens‘ and Dwayne Johnson‘s case, it was the same film. (We didn’t know if either of them would bounce back from Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, but here we are.) Check the gallery below to find out more about their respective upcoming projects, and what other celebs we cannot wait to see more of this year.
Are you the sort of person who scrolls down to see what shoes celebrities are wearing when you see an outfit that interests you? Then this is the list for you. Even if you aren’t a shoe fanatic, this is still a fun exercise, to be honest. We’ve compiled together our list of the top 25 most drool-worthy heels, platforms and boots spotted on celebrities in 2012. And to make it even more interesting, when you visit the gallery below, we’ve put pictures of the shoes first, with the celebrity reveal right after, so you can have a go at guessing who the gorgeous heel, platform, pump, bootie or boot belongs to! The caption on each celebrity reveal will also tell you what brand the shoe is and where and when it was worn. All our favourite celebrities are in there: Beyonce, Kristen Stewart, Emma Stone and a whole host more.

A couple of spoilers, though. We won’t tell you the color of the shoes so you can still have a guess when you look through the pictures. We adore Mila Kunis‘ Christian Louboutin ‘Pigalle’ and Miley Cyrus‘ Jimmy Choo ‘Tippi” pumps, respectively. Bella Thorne‘s Miu Miu platform booties are to die for, as are Rooney Mara‘s YSL ‘Tribtoo’ slingbacks. Have a blast figuring out which is which. We wish you a happy and well-heeled rest of 2012!
We’d like to start by saying that we love our work. We just love pizza, ice cream cakes and those Girl Scout cookies with the coconut a hell of a lot more. And that’s the thing that separates us from the truly great actors. Well, that and a zillion KFC buckets worth of talent! Uber-dedicated movie stars will sometimes go the extra mile and put their bodies through insane physical transformations that make us sore just watching them up there on the big screen. Many hit the gym ruthlessly to purge every excess pound from their body and slim down, while some (occasionally) take a few weeks to pack on the pounds for a role. If it were us we’d choose the pound-packing parts exclusively, but hey!
More recently Anne Hathaway, Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto took the tougher route and each shed an unbelievable amount of weight for their respective roles. Anne famously lost 25 pounds for the part of Fantine in the big screen adaptation of Les Miserables by eating two thin squares of oatmeal paste a day! We imagine that includes no dessert? McConaughey jettisoned his Magic Mike six-pack to play the HIV positive lead in Dallas Buyers Club, and his whopping 40 pound weight loss has lead some to wonder if he’s going too far. It’s got to be rough, but they certainly aren’t the first famous folks to go through such a dramatic body overhaul before going in front of the camera. Head on down to the gallery below for more thespians who took their bodies to crazy town, all in the name of their art. Sit down with a nice bag of chips and enjoy!
Jared Leto showed off his newly shaved eyebrows Monday night as he arrived at the 22nd annual Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York City. Thanks, Jared, we weren’t planning on sleeping between now and Christmas, anyhow. The freaky new look is apparently for his role in The Dallas Buyers Club, the same flick that caused Matthew McConaughey to starve himself down to the size of our pinky. Jared himself was recently photographed in some very loud drag for the role. Damn, this movie has gotta be some serious Oscar-bait!
We’ve all heard about actors changing their hairstyles for film roles, but it’s a bit more rare to be told to buzz the brows! But still Leto is by no means the first guy who’s had to do crazy stuff to his eyebrows in the name of Hollywood glory. Head down to the gallery below to see 10 famous faces with some wacked out brows!
Is Side Effects the bizarro version of The Vow? The Vow plus Memento? A woman happily married to Channing Tatum suddenly doesn’t remember what happened to her during a specific dark period of time, only instead of Rachel McAdams, the wife is played by Rooney Mara. And instead of amnesia, she has…whatever kind of amnesia allows Jude Law to turn you into an unknowing homicide machine. We honestly aren’t sure if that’s the correct plot (or, frankly, even close to the plot) after watching the film’s trailer, but the important thing to keep in mind when thinking about Side Effects is Channing Tatum. Dreamy soft-focus Channing Tatum, joined later by furrowed-brow possible-husband-of-a-murderer Channing Tatum. There’s also some sexy business and at least murder going on, but mostly? Channing Tatum.
Side Effects is allegedly one of Steven Soderbergh‘s last features before the director retires from the moviemaking business forever, the other being the Liberace biopic Behind The Candelabra. The man is going out on top! Soderbergh also filmed Channing for Magic Mike, so we’re guessing he knows what the fans want out of a Channing Tatum sexy murder movie: shirtlessness, wall-punching, pelvic thrusting if and when appropriate.
Nothing screams frenzy like a celebrity sighting, or two, at a musical festival. Yesterday, “Did you see Ryan Gosling?” texts were already reaching our crew while we battled the heat at the opening day of Austin City Limits Music Festival. We laughed at the mere thought of actually running into a celebrity (aside from the ones we interviewed) amidst at least 50,000 people. Turns out spotting Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara was not as impossible as it seemed if you were watching the Black Lips perform. Read more…
We took a look at the women who are establishing themselves as the action heroines of the future, as well as some actresses from whom we want to see more onscreen butt-kicking. Did we miss anyone on our list? Check out our gallery and then let us know!
