This is one of those posts where we don’t want, or need, to write much, because all we want to do is squee! Lionsgate just released some stills from The Hunger Games next installment Catching Fire, and we’re loving these little sneak peeks. As y’all know, we’re solid fans of Sam Claflin portraying Finnick Odair, so the shot released a little earlier, of him trying to make Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) lose her concentration, made us go a little weak in the knees. The other two newly released shots include Katniss with Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) making a speech in what we think could be during their victory tour. The other is a behind-the-scenes look of the film’s director Francis Lawrence chatting with Lawrence and co-star Liam Hemsworth (Gale). Wonder what J.Law is grinning about? Enough talking, more pictures. How excited are you about the movie? We sure as hell are! Read more…
Well, we see everyone remembered to take their crazy pills this morning. What other explanation can there be for the rampant debate on Twitter and Tumblr over whether Sam Claflin is hot enough to be Hunger Games contender Finnick Odair, following the release of Entertainment Weekly‘s new Catching Fire cover. First of all, you can’t base a character or performer’s hotness on one photo. You have to look at all the evidence. Was Sam Claflin hot on the Catching Fire set in September? Yes. Was he hot leaping into the water while wearing a skin-tight wetsuit? Double yes. And if you have to base someone’s hotness on one photo, why not base it on EW’s inside photo of Katniss and Finnick? Are you looking at it now? Alright, alright.
So why are people doubting Claflin’s ability to pull off a character who is supposed to be hotness incarnate? If you ask us, it’s because both stars are clearly suffering from a case of Heinous Wig Syndrome (HWS), a terrible disease that also befell the Twilight casts during the last four movies of their franchise. Admit it: even Jennifer Lawrence looks less than amazing on this cover. Maybe those are special cinematic wigs that just don’t take to the close shots and heavy Photoshop of magazine photography. We don’t know; we never finished our Masters in Wig Studies. But keep the faith, everybody. We suspect Sam Claflin will have you furiously shipping Katniss/Finnick in no time. Seriously, did you look at that second photo? Humina.

What’s that one scene in Catching Fire where Katniss looks like a total bad ass? Just kidding, that’s every single scene. Photos from the Hawaii set of the Hunger Games sequel are hitting the interwebs, so it only seems helpful to break down what America is looking at. Based on the fact our tributes are perched on top of individual platforms in the photos, it looks like we’re at the Quarter Quell. The Quarter Quell occurs at the very beginning of the 75th Hunger Games, the moment before the real good stuff starts. And the good stuff starts very quickly. Did you notice that somebody is wielding a trident?
We probably should have know when we saw him blowing those air kisses on the Catching Fire set that Sam Claflin was our kind of celebrity. The Hunger Games star’s adorably cheesy Twitter account only confirmed our suspicions. Everything he writes is exactly what we’d write if we’d suddenly found ourselves in a multimillion dollar franchise! To wit, Sam’s renamed Follow Friday…Follow Finnick Friday. Of course, that’s only one of the eye-rollers that we spotted on his Twitter. Our top 10 favorite are…
Do you find this…distracting? While Sam Claflin rocked a slender, almost feral steez for his role in Snow White And The Huntsman, we could not be happier with how his Finnick Odair look is shaping up on the Atlanta set of Catching Fire. We know there are few holdouts who would have drawn a different actor to play the Hunger Games tribute (For example, maybe Garrett Hedlund would have picked Garrett Hedlund, if he hadn’t been busy shooting On the Road.), but there are three important details at play that already affirm definitively (definitively to us, anyway) that Sam was the right pick for Finnick:
- Dat hair: you know we love Josh Hutcherson, but the new photos of his blond Peeta locks are over-the-top bleached. As for Sam’s Finnick do? Bronze-color hair, golden skin, sea-green eyes…yeah, we can see it. Well, not the eyes, obviously. We just have to trust that the costumer department didn’t go crazy with the colored contacts. Either way, Sam is working it out.
- The jackedness: Claflin is typically a slim, pale, vest-wearing kind of hottie (our preferred flavor), but set photos make it clear that he’s ready, willing and able to get appropriately huge for the role.
- Randomly blowing kisses to unseen (possibly nonexistent) cheering fans: that’s the Finnick swagger the character requires. Excuse his “natural beauty.”
Great, so…when are they shooting him in the golden fishnet toga thing? Maybe we’ll just rent a car and drive all night to find out ourselves! That’s cool, right Sam?
After years of waiting and hoping and fantasizing that everyone from Taylor Kitsch to Robert Pattinson would take on the role of Finnick in the Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, Lionsgate has at last put us out of our misery and announced who’d get the highly coveted part: Sam Claflin. After playing Prince Charming in Snow White and the Huntsman, he certainly made a number of people’s wish list to take on the role of the flashy, handsome and surprisingly lovelorn District 4 tribute. (And man, we’re glad someone’s getting a happily ever after out of SWATH.)
Does he have the kind of depth to play this unlikely revolutionary hero with a knack for spearing people with his trusty trident? Tell us what you think. Here’s a little gallery that will certainly help his case:
Jena Malone has been officially cast as Catching Fire‘s Johanna Mason! Could you possibly be more surprised? We’re being sarcastic, of course; we feel like we’ve heard more about this particular casting rumor than about any detail of The Hunger Games so far. With all this hype, Jena had better bring her arm-stabbing game correct! We’re just being sarcastic again; we’re positive she will. While it was a long time coming, we’re at least glad to know who will be portraying one of the movie’s more pivotal characters. What other details do we know about Catching Fire thus far? Allow us to break it down for you.
Yes, we are totally onboard with this. Let’s make it official! We’ve already had the possibility of Glee‘s Grant Gustin, Garrett Hedlund, Hunter Parrish, Armie Hammer, Taylor Kitsch and Jesse Williams dangled in front of our noses as rumored candidates to play tribute Finnick Odair in the Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire. According to Zap2It, Snow White and The Huntsman‘s Sam Claflin has allegedly been offered the role as of today; now he just has to accept it. Which he had better. If the rumor is false, this is literally the seventh time we’ve gotten our hopes up. If not, Sam seems like a fabulous pick, even considering the fact that he holds his mouth all silly on the red carpet. Well, he does! It’s sort of adorable!
Meanwhile, Variety named Melissa Leo and Tony Shaloub as frontrunners for tributes and former Hunger Games victors Mags and Beetee respectively. Mags is supposed to be around 80 years old, but we will overlook that seeing as how Melissa already has an Oscar under her belt for The Figher. She’ll make it work. Meanwhile, Shaloub would be the perfect foil for Amanda Plummer’s Wiress; we already know from Monk that Tony can do intelligent and twitchy. So enough with the rumors already! Get these three to sign on the dotted line already so we can start cranking out some highly detailed, highly inappropriate fanfic!

Even if you’ve been watching all the nonstop coverage of Snow White and the Huntsman, you’d be forgiven for still wondering about that handsome Brit who keeps appearing alongside Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth. Your new fairytale prince is Sam Claflin, a 25-year-old U.K. native who’s fairly new to the big screen, but will definitely be making a reappearance. Prior to his role as William in Snow White, Sam’s first big movie break came when he was cast as Phillip Swift in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Across the pond, Sam has already made quite a name for himself after appearing on two award-winning British TV series, The Pillars of the Earth and Any Human Heart in 2010.
Sam’s now the new boy on the Hollywood block and definitely catching everyone’s eye. We can’t help but fall in love with him. Sam is a gentleman, charming, sweet, a terrific actor, and well … pretty darn beautiful. We’ll have to keep our admiration from a distance, though, as Sammy’s taken. He’s engaged to English actress Laura Haddock whom he brought to the London premiere of Snow White. Check out the video above, in which Sam so eloquently describes to our own Kate Spencer what beauty is to him, working in a loving reference to Laura.
If you’re not convinced just how charming he is, browse through this painstakingly created Sam Claflin gallery (it was a tough job, but someone had to do it!).

It looks like Cosmopolis has earned the Kristen Stewart seal of approval. The actress got a chance to weigh in on boyfriend Robert Pattinson’s latest film yesterday at MTV News’ Sneak Peek Week Q&A for her own upcoming movie, Snow White and the Huntsman. KStew caught the film while attending the Cannes film festival, and needless to say she’s pretty stoked about her Twilight love’s work.”He’s so good in it!” she squeed. “He’s really, really [good]. I don’t even know how he [did it]. I couldn’t even understand it. It’s so good, it’s so cool, I’m so proud of him.” Her gushing enthusiasm is more than enough to melt any Twi-hard’s heart, and sent the crowd into a giant “awww” that could probably be heard in the next county.
But the interview wasn’t all about the RPattz. Kristen was on a mission to bring her Snow White and the Huntsman gospel to the people, and she and co-star Sam Claflin definitely delivered the goods with this brand-new clip. Hopefully it’ll tide you over until Friday…
