Zac Efron, Wise Choice: Cocaine Never Helped These Former Child Stars

Zac Efron Tatum O'Neal Drew Barrymore

With the reports that he recently completed a stint in rehab for cocaine, Zac Efron’s getting more buzz (oops) than any of his recent movie roles. That’s not to suggest he fell into a dangerous drug habit on purpose, mind you. But we have noticed cocaine has played a role in the lives of quite a few actors who got an early start in Hollywood — and it wasn’t necessarily to their benefit. If the rumors of the High School Musical star (whose upcoming movies include Parkland and Neighbors) trashing hotel rooms and missing shoots are true, we’re pretty glad he got help. Here are some other former teen/child stars whose cocaine use got in the way of us taking their adult careers seriously:

Will Beasts Of The Southern Wild‘s Quvenzhane Wallis Join These Past Child Oscar Nominees?

Beasts Of The Southern Wild's Quvenzhane Wallis Rumored For Oscar Noms

You know what the Academy Awards have been missing recently? Adorableness. That all might change if Beasts of The Southern Wild actress Quvenzhane Wallis gets nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. According to Hit Fix (as well as anyone who actually saw Beasts Of The Southern Wild) 9-year-old Wallis’ turn as the protagonist Hushpuppy could make her the youngest actress to win that particular award. Which got us thinking about all the child nominees and winners that came before. Why can’t the Oscars be entirely child actors and actresses? Ratings would go through the roof! Someone make a call to Bruce Vilanch, and in the meantime we’ll look back at kid nominees from Jodie Foster to Haley Joel Osment to Shirley Temple.

Ryan O’Neal Blames Daughter Tatum, Rest Of Family For Farrah Fawcett’s Cancer

Ho boy. We are not research scientists, but we are going to go ahead and question the science behind this particular theory. During his Piers Morgan interview, Ryan O’Neal blamed Farrah Fawcett’s cancer on his tumultuous family, specifically (and by specifically, we mean by name) daughter Tatum O’Neal. “What bothers me the most is that there was turmoil during my love affair with Farrah. A lot of it caused by my family, by my kids. All of them, but particularly Tatum,” O’Neal told a seemingly stunned Morgan. “I just think, if she had never met us, would she be alive today? Nobody knows what causes cancer. She didn’t smoke. She didn’t drink. She exercised every day and believed in good health. And then we came along.” So basically he’s narrowed the causes of cancer down to cigarettes, drinking, lack of exercise or actress Tatum O’Neal. How would you even test something like that? The woman can only stand next to a cage of lab rats for so long.

The odd part about this (besides, you know, all of it) is the idea that troubled Tatum is especially to blame, when both brother Redmond O’Neal as well as Ryan himself have been repeatedly busted for drug use. “Maybe it’s not true, but it’s possible.” O’Neal admits when Morgan pushes him on his hypothesis, before adding “Sorry Tatum, but you probably know, too.” We look forward to seeing O’Neal’s upcoming findings in the peer-reviewed journal, “Ryan O’Neal’s Journal Of Soul-Crushing Assumptions.”

Ryan O’Neal Hits On Daughter Tatum At Farrah’s Funeral

Ryan-Oneal

Maybe this explains why Farrah Fawcett didn’t leave anything in her will to her longtime love Ryan O’Neal: Fawcett wasn’t even buried yet and O’Neal hit on a woman at her funeral. And the woman, O’Neal later realized, was his daughter Tatum.

Ryan told Vanity Fair that at Fawcett’s funeral, a blonde woman approached him to give him a hug and, not recognizing her as Tatum, he said, “I had just put the casket in the hearse and I was watching it drive away when a beautiful blond woman comes up and embraces me … I said to her, ‘You have a drink on you? You have a car?’She said ‘Daddy, it’s me – Tatum!’ I was just trying to be funny with a strange Swedish woman, and it’s my daughter. It’s so sick.”

The O’Neals have had a famously turbulent relationship, but we didn’t think  they were so estranged that Ryan wouldn’t be able to recognize his own daughter. On the other hand, good thing it wasn’t actually some strange Swedish woman he had hit on, the Swedes are so bad at understanding our American funeral pickup rituals. Tatum laughed it off, saying, “That’s our relationship in a nutshell. You make of it what you will. It had been a few years since we’d seen each other and he was always a ladies’ man, a bon vivant.” Ugh, this whole thing is Bad News Bears. [Photo: GettyImages]

10 Teen Stars At 27: Britney Could Have It Worse

It’s hard to believe that Britney Spears, once America’s favorite exhibitionist virgin, is a 27-year-old mother of two. And though her career may still have the aroma of trainwreck, it could be worse—she could be a trainwreck no one cares about. Check out the gallery to see how Britney today compares to ten other former teen stars at 27. For every Drew Barrymore she might envy, there’s a Leif Garrett to envy her.

The Family That Does Meth Together, Stays Together

Summer did not go very well for the O’Neal family. On the heels of Tatum O’Neal‘s June arrest in connection with suspicion of cocaine possession, her father Ryan O’Neal and half-brother Redmond O’Neal were arrested this morning for suspicion of methamphetamine possession. The Love Story actor and his 23-year-old son with actress Farah Fawcett were taken into custody after Los Angeles Sheriff’s deputies and probation officers went to their Malibu home for a routine check on Redmond, who is serving three years of probation after pleading guilty in June to drug possession charges. Both remain in custody on $10,000 bail. [Source:AP; Photo:Getty]
