Miley Cyrus knows that while some things change (like the social acceptability of mullets and denim shirts), other things stay the same. For example, things like Billy Ray Cyrus‘s fierce Blue Steel modeling pose. “Awkward family photos. Look @billyraycyrus always giving face!,” the singer tweeted last night along with a childhood snapshot featuring Miley alongside her pops, mom Tish and three of her absurdly blond siblings, including older brother Trace Cyrus. Is it us, or does Billy Ray look like he is somehow Photobombing his own family? Go ahead and close up shop, Awkward Family Photos. We know it’s not a contest, but somehow Miley still just managed to win.

With Miley Cyrus hogging all the headlines, it’s easy to forget that her parents are going through their fair share of drama. Tish and Billy Ray Cyrus filed for divorce in October, 2010, with rumors circulating that Tish had a fling with Bret Michaels. But now mom and dad Cyrus have decided to give their marriage another shot. Billy Ray is calling off the divorce, and he explained the whole deal to The View ladies this week. He said, “I dropped the divorce. I wanted to put my family back together.”
He also explained that the family’s working towards mending rifts. “Communication I think is one of the biggest problems that we as human beings have in this whole world and I think for the first time me and my entire family are finally communicating with each other in a way that it’s been quite some time and to answer your question, things are really the best they’ve ever been.”
Call us old-fashioned, but we think this is great news. A 17-year-old marriage (and counting) does deserve another shot. He’s also sorted his issues out with Miley after that GQ interview he gave, saying, “I’ve got my Miley back.” Bro needs to realize when he’s given good quote, because he rambled about Hannah Montana AGAIN, adding, “I feel like we are the daddy and the daughter that we were before Hannah Montana happened. Our communication, we have laughed a lot in the last couple of days.”

Like Snooki, Miley Cyrus wasn’t going to wait until Tuesday to celebrate her birthday. Instead, the nearly-18-year-old indulge in a private party after last night’s American Music Awards, trading the long-tailed glam of her red carpet appearance for a tasteful black bikini-top and matching skin-tight pants (adulthood, y’all!). While the gruesome details are certain to come, Miley warned Access Hollywood in advance that she and mommy Tish would be facing each other in a dance-off. “Me and my mom actually have choreography for the night later — everyone loves when we dance in unison. There’s one [move] where you do like, the fist pump. You Jersey Shore it for a second!”
Sunday wasn’t entirely full of questionable choices, though. According to TMZ, Miley decided at the last minute not to cover Poison‘s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” for the AMAs broadcast, plausibly because Bret Michaels was rumored to be dallying with Tish before she announced plans to divorce from Billy Ray Cyrus. Though everyone’s denied the claims, odds are Daddy wouldn’t have given that song choice his trademark standing “O”. See photos from Sunday in the gallery below.
Update: TMZ has a photo of Miley getting a birthday kiss—and straddle—from a guy at the party who looks a lot like rumored boyfriend/actor Avan Jogia. Careful, dude: she’s not really 18 until tomorrow!
Poor Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus – try as they might to keep daughter Miley under their thumb for as long as possible, she decided it was time to move out and get her own place. Commence the aching and breaking of their hearts NOW.
Miley tells People that even though her mother wanted her to live at home until she turned 20, she convinced her otherwise. “I’m actually buying a placem” she says. “I haven’t moved in yet. I’m still reconstructing and stuff.” Her mom is on board with the new pad though and plans to help decorate, she explains. “My mom’s an interior designer so my house is going to be perfect all the time.”
At seventeen we had some interesting (i.e. embarrassing) ideas about what was cool, and it turns out that Miley is no different – like us, she’s a hippie who leans toward a Pier 1 aesthetic. ”We did all these different things to make it a place that’s so chill, like all my couches are on the floor and I have pillows on the floor. It’s just serene – like my own kind of therapy.” Or, you know, like the lobby of a yoga studio.
Then she revealed the secret meaning behind all these low-to-the-ground furnishings that we never understood before, divulging that, “my religion is love, so my door is always open for anyone who wants to come in.” Except for pregnant ladies and old people who have trouble getting up out of their chairs even when they’re at a normal height – your religion excludes them.
