There was one unplanned “duet” at the taping of VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul (airing Monday, Dec. 19 at 9/8c) that had everybody talking last night: 50 Cent and Chaka Khan. The powerhouse duo, more than two decades apart in age, showed up on the red carpet entwined in each other’s arms. When questioned by VH1 News correspondent Janell Snowden, fiddy explained: “I’ve always been a fan of Chaka Khan and I reached out and asked her if I could attend with her tonight.”
“We met last week officially for the first time,” said Chaka. “But we’ve loved each other’s music and we’ve loved each other’s art form forever.” The sight of the two looking like lovebirds sparked plenty of chatter on the web, with some sites like the notoriously inaccurate MediaTakeOut claiming the two are full-on dating.
While we all know the adage “love knows no boundaries,” we’re wondering if their cuddling was a playful way to make some noise while announcing a joint project together. “We’re working together,” admitted 50 Cent to MTV News. “We’re working on a project, hit music.” It will be “big things,” added Chaka. We can’t wait.
When VH1 Diva performerJessie J stopped by to chat with our red carpet host La La Anthony about her jaw-dropping outfit, she explained: “I sat with Falguni and Shane Peacock and I explained to them that I need a dress that’s skin tight that makes me feel like a diva.” Mission accomplished, thrice! Her red carpet number, a sheer black dress with gold embroidery and crucifix imagery, was one of the most talked-about outfits of the night, possibly because it made only a feeble attempt to cover her bra and panties — although she sure kept her feet modest with that black curtain.
Queen Latifah may have bypassed the red carpet at the VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul event last night, but that only served to make her onstage appearance even more of a hit. The Queen wowed everyone as she appeared to sing a duet with Dolly Parton — who changed into a different black gown than the black embellished dress she wore to maker her entrance. The singer wore an amazing Edition by Georges Chakra custom made blue crepe mermaid gown with a striking silver metallic neckline and a sexy slit. The make-up, hair and silver sandals that went with the gown were spot on, too. The perfect, classy choice for the evening — kudos, Your Highness.
Two of the biggest stars to walk on the VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul carpet last night, ended up wearing outfits of the same shade only to very different ends. We’re talking about Jennifer Hudson and Mary J. Blige, both of whom looked pretty nifty in a neutral. While Jennifer changed into four outfits through the night, it’s the short beige dress that she wore on the red carpet, and she looks gorgeous and tiny in it. Mary also wore creamy beige, but the hemline, as you can see on the right, was a lot longer. Her crystal embellished draped gown was by Michael Kors.
So there you have it. Both divas, both in beige. But who wore it better? Let us know in the poll below.
Can anything with the word “divas” in it be complete without one Ms. Dolly Parton? We didn’t think so. She sparkled on the star studded VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul carpet wearing a big smile, red nails, a black bedazzled black dress covered in rivets and a pair of knee-high boots. The country music legend was roped in to present an award at the show. Do we wish she had gone vintage Dolly with the glitter and the big hair? Yeah, kinda. But we’re also loving this version of her — still larger than life. but a lot more streamlined.
VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul airs Monday, Dec. 19 at 9PM EST, but you don’t have to wait a minute longer to ogle Jennifer Hudson — and ogle you will! Representing soul for Chicago, Jennifer showed up at the red carpet wearing sparkling thigh-high boots and a very short beige dress.
Is there anything hotter than a diva? How about about a man who loves divas? How about a man who loves divas, and is himselfa diva? We know; it’s almost too beautiful to consider. Whether they were performing at the taping of VH1’s Divas Celebrates Soul tonight or simply respecting the shine of the women and men who did, gentlemen like Common, Questlove and 50 Cent brought that red carpet elegance. Boyz II Men also shared cooleyhighharmony in every sense of the word, while Travie McCoy and Nas went casual in caps. Hey, we don’t blame them; it’s freezing in New York! And we don’t want anyone going into full diva mode, would we? VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul premieres Monday, Dec., 19 at 9PM EST.
Florence Welch is our new Stevie Nicks, correct? We can all get on board with a woman who knows how to rock out while simultaneously carrying off all those flowing layers. Whether it’s adorning the VH1’s Divas Celebrates Soul red carpet with a white embellished cropped dress or performing in a dreamy transparent gold gown, the Florence + the Machine front woman is deeply committed to the long, proud tradition of white witch style. Would it be fair to say she’s our one-winged dove? Diva…please.
Yank on your Spanx and prepare your side eye: the ladies of VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul, which premieres Monday, Dec. 19 at 9PM EST, turned it out on the red carpet. Metallics were huge at the event: Mob Wives‘ Drita D’avanzo slipped into skin-tight gold, Estelle shined in Grecian-style bronze and Love And Hip-Hop 2‘s Emily Bustamante shimmered in off-the-shoulder gunmetal. Jessie J paired her gold with sheer cut-outs and an asymmetrical bob, while The Good Wife‘s Archie Panjabi dressed in slinky black. Jill Scott looked royal in blue, La La Anthony paired a fuchsia lip with herringbone and a slick updo (because she’s business, not casual), and a tinyJennifer Hudson paired peach with a mint manicure. Looking heavenly, both Mary J. Blige and Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine upped the glamor with glittering white. We hope looking this hot doesn’t ruin anyone’s diva reputation. La La Vazquez Anthony asked the most important diva-related question of all time tonight on the VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul red carpet: which performer is destined to be the next Aretha Franklin? Keeping in mind that each performer is talented in his or her own way, plus there will never be another Aretha Franklin, the clearly crowd favorite seemed to be the one and only Mary J. Blige. That being said, you can’t deny singers like Jennifer Hudson, Jill Scott and Jessie J offer some strong, sassy, well-coiffed competition. What do you think? Who should be graced with the title of The Next Aretha?
