Don’t depend on black
Contrary to popular belief, wearing black isn’t always slimming. The key is cut, not color: A baggy shirt adds
heft, even in a dark hue. So if you opt for ebony, choose a sleek shape, then try layering to slim further:
Wear a cardigan over a tee in a contrasting color and belt it at your midsection’s narrowest point.
Trim your top half
Have broad shoulders? Try jackets with seams that hit right at the shoulder or about a quarter inch above.
Avoid shoulder pads and boatneck tops. Big arms? Go sleeveless to create a long, fluid line from shoulder to
wrist. In cold weather, opt for three-quarter sleeves to spotlight your arm's thinnest part: your wrist. Top-heavy?
Wear V-necks. A triangular neck draws the eye up to your face and lengthens your neckline.
Slim a pear shape
If your hips and thighs take center stage, slip on a structured A-line skirt, which hugs your smaller center and
flares away from the hips and butt in a crisp silhouette. For pants, favor wide-legged trousers with a slightly low
rise, which de-emphasizes any waist-to-hip disparity.
Choose earrings carefully
Long, narrow earrings contrast starkly with a round face and actually emphasize its fullness. Pick round studs
or subtle drops instead.
Boost your bust
A bra that delivers support can slim your silhouette. The perfect fit lifts your chest to create differentiation from
the rib cage, instantly slimming the torso. To make sure your bra supports you, give it this test: Slip one on,
stand sideways at a mirror and bend your elbow 90 degrees. Your bustline should be between your shoulder
and the middle of your biceps. If it sits lower, it’s time for a new bra.
Flatter your face
Get defined cheekbones by applying a Nike-like swoosh under the cheekbones with a bronzer two shades
darker than your skin tone. Then brush on blush, fanning from the middle of the cheekbone out to the temple.
Producing the illusion of larger eyes also makes a wide face appear smaller. To open up eyes, extend shadow
beyond the lid’s crease, then add a lighter shade to brow bone.
Be a 10 in your head!
Building your confidence can help you stand taller - and trimmer. So when an “I’m feeling fat” mood strikes,
ask yourself, "What’s really bothering me?" Chances are, it has nothing to do with your jean size, but another
area of your life you don’t want to confront. Keep track of what kinds of situations can trigger bad body-image
days so you can defuse them in advance. To squelch them, repeat to yourself, “I refuse to be a victim of these
feelings,” or try imagining a STOP sign to signal you to put an end to them altogether.
Photoshop your figure
Want to airbrush your body before the camera goes click? Ditch any hint of a double chin by pressing your tongue
up to the soft palate in your mouth before you say cheese. Then strike this slimming pose: Stand at an angle so
one foot points toward the camera, while the other points out to the side. Putting one leg in front of the other
makes your hips, thighs and legs look half their width, as the other half is out of sight.
