movie role, though, will thrust him into territory he's never encountered before.

But then, nobody else has either. Ne-Yo has joined the cast of "Battle: Los Angeles," a sci-fi action film about a platoon of Marines fighting off a swarm of invading aliens, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"We are doing our best to do something that hasn't been done before," director Jonathan Liebesman, a veteran of horror flicks like "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning," told MTV News in March. "This is like ['Bourne Supremacy' director] Paul Greengrass got a camera, saw some aliens and shot it from the point of view of a platoon. It's literally like 'Black Hawk Down,' if there were aliens in there. Like Iraq war footage, but with aliens running around."

Ne-Yo is set to play a corporal in the film that stars Aaron Eckhart as the leader of a platoon struggling to fight against the aliens on the streets of L.A. Michelle Rodriguez portrays another corporal, and Bridget Moynahan will play a veterinarian. "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" star Ramon Rodriguez has also joined the cast as a platoon member.

Shooting is expected to begin this week in Shreveport, Louisiana, with a tentative release date in early 2011.

In addition to acting in "Battle," Ne-Yo recently signed on to another big-screen project: He'll be writing and singing the closing track for the animated Disney film "The Princess and the Frog," due out later this year.
