When you consider the astonishing rate at which the pop culture machine moves at these days, September 2006 seems like it was an eternity ago. That’s when My Chemical Romance, the New Jersey “Don’t call us emo” rockers, last released an LP of new material (the critical and commercial smash, The Black Parade). In the four years since this album’s release, other bands — notably 30 Seconds To Mars — have had great success employing similar sounds and themes, and it goes without saying that a lot of My Chem’s fan base has done a lot of growing up since then. In other words, now that it’s a new decade, are they still relevant?
Well, we’ll know more when the band’s fourth studio album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, is released next week. For now, their first single, “Sing,” looks as if it’s going to stand near the head of the class when we all look back at 2010’s most ambitious music videos. You’ll have to wait until Thursday to see the whole extravaganza, but based on the 30-second sneak we’ve got for you this morning (as well as the trailer that the band released on YouTube), it looks as if the band drew inspiration from their love of dystopian comic books like Watchmen for this impressive and high concept video.
