Fresh off of his appearance on yesterday’s Big Morning Buzz Live, we had the opportunity to sit down with Matt Nathanson, former You Oughta Know artist and the voice behind 2009’s platinum hit, “Come On Get Higher.” The self-proclaimed “music nerd” constantly suggests that his Twitter followers tap into the experience of listening to artists’ full albums, so every morning, he recommends one LP per day via the hashtag #morningrecords. The tune talk doesn’t stop there for Matt Nathanson, though; with a new album coming June 21st, he has his ears to the street, and since he’s a You Oughta Know alumnus, we were curious to know what artists he thinks are “on the rise.”
Already a big fan of Mumford & Sons and The Civil Wars, Nathanson fully approved of our selecting them as You Oughta Know artists. He also noted Seattle indie-folk six-piece band, The Head and The Heart, as being on his list of artists to watch, along with The Mountain Goats and country group Little Big Town. But then he brought up Lykke Li. “She owns it!” said the singer emphatically of the Swedish indie-pop starlette, adding that her sophomore album Wounded Rhymes is “the best record of the year, hands down.” Pretty bold statement, but we love it! Especially since Matt, who’s currently on tour with Sugarland, is singing duets with talent like Jennifer Nettles at each show.
In case you missed it, check out Matt’s hilarious interview with our very own Carrie Keagan from yesterday’s episode of Big Morning Buzz Live. And, by all means, let us know in the comments who YOU think the next VH1 You Oughta Know artist should be. We’re all ears!
