VMA Rumors: Britney Tribute To Feature Katy Perry, Ke$ha, And…Janet Jackson?

by

This morning’s announcement of Lady Gaga as a performer at this year’s Video Music Awards is the latest sort-of confirmation of a big VMA rumor that’s been going around since reality-TV production coordinator Johnathan Woodbeck tweeted it the day after the Britney Spears VMA promo, above, premiered. According to Woodbeck’s tweet, the show will contain a star-studded tribute medley with one song from each of Britney’s albums, followed by the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Award (presumably the Video Vanguard Award?) by none other than Madonna. The rumored performance lineup (via Lainey Gossip):

Selena Gomez “…Baby One More Time”
Katy Perry “Oops! …I Did It Again”
Janet Jackson “I’m a Slave 4 U”
Demi Lovato “Toxic”
Ke$ha and Nicki Minaj “Gimme More”
Lady Gaga “Circus”
Britney Spears “Hold It Against Me”/”I Wanna Go”

The part of this rumor that really makes it sound, um, less than authentic is the inclusion of Janet Jackson as a performer. With all due respect to Spears, whom we love, Jackson performing “I’m A Slave 4 U” sounds more like a fabrication based on the promo, even though, in a behind-the-scenes clip, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and Madonna are mentioned as influences on Spears in the “Muse Factory.” That said, Janet is in need of a comeback, and maybe this is just the sort of thing that could give her ailing career a jumpstart?

Our slight doubts aside, the show’s executive producer, Amy Doyle, did confirm to Billboard on Monday that Britney Spears would be present at the VMAs, though she didn’t quite say whether the planned tribute to her would culminate in an award. Not to mention that Katy Perry performing “Oops…I Did It Again” is a really obvious pairing, now that we think about it. We’ll be staying on top of this rumor to see if we can get any confirmation or denial.
